IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,828, dated March 18, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. FTsnER, of Amsterdam, county of Montgomery, State'of New York, have invented certain new; and useful Improvements in Wash-Boards, of which the following is a specification: Q

My invention relates to certain improvements in wash-boards, and consists in the combination of a series of vertical gutters, with the usual alternate horizontal ribs and spaces, in such a manner that the said gutters will communicate with the said spaces, and also lead through the said ribs from the top to the bottom of the said series of both the ribs and spaces and terminate at the lower side of the lowest rib, the object of my invention being to lead off the dirty water back of the faces of the spaces and ribs, and to prevent said water from running on the clothes being washed.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to.' describe it in reference to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked" thereon, the same letters indicating like parts.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a wash-board with parts broken away, illustrating the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.

I am aware that wash-boards covered with zinc have been made with holes and grooves to lead the water off from over the face of the ribs; but such gutters did not lead below the lower rib, but terminated at the same on {its Such gutters are not claimed by me as my invention.

In my invention the dirty water which usually flows into the spaces z z is permitted to run into the gutters w w and flow down back of the spaces between the ribs and escape through their terminations ac so into the tub, and. from contact with the clothes beingrubbed on the board, which the water cannot do in the common form of wash-board or the zinc covered board above referred to.

Havingdescribed myinvention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a wash-board, the combination of the vertical gutters w as with the ribs a a and spaces 2 z in which the said gutters will communicate with the faces of the several spaces 2 z, andwill be run through the several ribs a a, and terminate on the lower side of the lowest 'rib a, substantially as shown and described,
