T 0 all 10 710m it may concern Be it known that J OSKAR JUNGHANS, engineer, a subject of the King of \Vurttemberg, residing at Schramberg, lVurttemberg, Germany, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving-Gears, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present improvement relates to a,
driving gear for rotary apparatus, and is.
especially designed for driving the arma ture of electric pocket lamps, such as set forth in my application Serial No. 124,915, filed October 10, 1916, in which the current required for feeding the lamp is produced by means of a dynamo manually operated through the intermediary of said driving gear.
In order that the rotation may be maintained during the return stroke of the operating lever for the driving gear, or, in other words, during the period when no direct force is exerted by the hand of the operator on the gear, the ratchet wheel and the first gear wheel are coupled in such a manner, by means of a coiled spring, that the said spring is put under tension during the operation of the driving gear and will, during the return stroke of the driving lever impart a driving motion to the gearing. This spring is subjected to a high torsional strain while being tightened and is therefore very liable to break.
lVith the object of reliably obviating this, the present improvement provides a stop which will allow of a certain tension of the spring only, and when such tension has been reached, will automatically engage the clutch between the ratchet wheel and the first gear wheel.
In the accompanying drawing a constructional form of the present improvement has been set out. Figure 1 is an elevation, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section, the operating lever having been omitted. Fig. 8 is a section on the line AA in Fig. 1 seen from above, and Fig. 4 is the same section seen from below. The driving gear is composed in known manner of the driving wheel a with a pawl b, the ratchet wheel 0 and the gear wheel rZ, which transmits themotion to the speeding-up gear for the armature of the dynamo. The driving wheel a is operated in known manner by means of a toothed segment 6 and an operating lever f, and transmits this rotation by means of the pawl 12 to the ratchet wheel 0. This ratchet wheel 0 is rigidly fitted to the shaft 9, whereas the other wheels are loose on said shaft. To the ratchet wheel cis secured one end of the coiled spring 71., the other end of which is rigidly attached to the gear wheel cl. According to the present improvement a fixed stop, for example a pin 2' is provided on the ratchet wheel 0, which stop z engages in a recess or gap 7' in the hub 70 of wheel (Z. As the spring is fitted with a certain initial tension, the pin 2' will, as a rule, bear against the one side of the gap 7'. (Fig. 4). When the wheel 0 is turned by the operation of the lever f, the spring it will carry the gear wheel (Z with it and is at the same time ti htened, the pin 2', in the meantime traveling freely in the gap 7' of wheel (Z. When the tension of the spring reaches the predetermined limit, the pin 2' bears against the other side of the gap j and thereby automatically transmits the rotation of the ratchet wheel 0 directly to the gear wheel (Z, so that the torsional strain on the spring it will not be further increased and the breaking of said spring is avoided.
I claim:
In a device of the class described, a sup porting member, a ratchet wheel mounted thereon, pawl mechanism for actuating said ratchet wheel. a gear on said supporting member, a resilient connection between said gear and ratchet wheel, and a lost motion connection between said gear and ratchet wheel, limiting the tension of said resilient connection.
