Patented Feb.'"8, 1921.
UNITED sTATEs vEDWAELD H. LU'TZ, OF MIL'WAUKEE, WISCONSIN. l
WINDOW-snsrr HOLDER.
Application filed September' 14, 1920.
T o all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD H. LUTZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vindow- Sash Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for sliding window sashes or other slidable members movable within a fixed or relatively fixed frame, the purpose being to provide means for securing the sash or the like in adjusted positions within its frame.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide a means which will properly hold the sash without the usual counterbalance weights and sash cords or chains.
An additional object of this invention is to provide a means of this character which can be readily adjusted for use in connection with sashes of different weights.
It is likewise an object of this invention to provide a sash holding means which can be applied to practically any type of sliding member such as window sashes7 for instance those window sashes which are already in use, or which are just being installed.
With these general objects in view, the invention resides in the ngvel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the -accompanying drawing:
Figure l represents a part elevational view and part sectional View of one corner of a window sash and its frame, showing the manner of applying my invention thereto, and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the frame and sash showing the invention in top plan.
Referring more particularlyto the drawing, it will be seen. that the reference character l denotes a .window frame having a sliding sash 2 movable therein.
In applying the invention one or more of the corners of the sash 2, or one or both frame engaging portions thereof, is provided with a recess 3 in which 'is located a gripping Specification oi" Letters Patent.
Serial No. 410,189.
lever 4, the same being fulcrumed between pivot' ears 5 extending inwardly into the recess 3 from a supporting plate 6. This plate (3 is secured to one of the edges of the sash 2 other than the frame engaging edges and forms a closure for one end of the recess 3 when said recess is located as indicated in Fig. l.
The lever is pivoted at one end and its opposite end carries a friction roller 7, the face of which is coveredwith suitable gripping material such as rubber or the like, and the inner side of said lever is formed with an inclined or cam surface 8. Also disposed in the recess 3 and against one wall thereof is a guide channel 9 which forms a guideway for a cam nut 10. As most clearly indicated in Fig. l, one edge of this nut l0 has a cam face for coperation with the inclined face or cam surface 8 of the lever 4, whereas another portion is located in said guide chan nel 9.
The nut is thus held against rotation while being permitted to move longitudinally of the channel and throughout the length of said inclined face or cam surface 8. Adjustment of the nut is obtained by means of a feed screw 11 which extends inwardly of the recess 3 from the plate 6, its head 13 being journaled in said plate. The nut being disposed on the threaded .shank of the feed screw 1l is moved toward or away from the plate 6 upon rotation of said screw, and thus the friction roller is urged toward or away from the frame l.
It is thus possible to, use a device of this nature upon sashes of different weights, it being simply necessary to make the proper adjustments for weight after the parts of the invention are applied. That is to say in the case of a heavy sash it will be necessary to force the lever carried roller 7 toward the frame l with a greater degree of force than in the case cfa light sash. It is likewise obvious that adjustment is readily possible during the course kof use of the device to compensate for wear or the like. If necessary or desirable a plurality of the devices can be employed with each sash1l and located in suitable parts thereof.
I claim:
The combination. with a sliding member and a frame therefor, of means for holding Patent-ed Feb. s, 1921. 'I
the member in various adjusted positions with respect to the frame eomprisinga frame engaging element having a cam face, a feed screw, and a nut on said feed screw having a cam surface for engagement with said cam face, whereby upon rotation of said feed screw, the nut may be shifted to move/the element against the frame with a greater or lesser degree of force.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I l0 have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in theV oounty of Milwaukee and State of Wis cousin.
EDWARD HQ LUTZ.
