COMBINATION rAuoE'r A m DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
. Application filed May 1 1, 1920. Serial No. 380,610.-
the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new anduseful improvements. in combined faucetsv and drinking fountains, and has for its primary object the provision of anarticle which can be selectively used in either of these relations.
provide asimply constructed article which, being formed of sheet'metal can'be manufactured very inexpensively and readlly ap; plied to standard faucet structures.
Another object of the inventioniis to provide a device of this character which can be so disposed upon a standard faucet structure that it may be readily manually swung into a position to be used as a drinklng fountain and automatically moved by grav+ ity action so that its discharge end will be positioned downwardly, thus preventing the trapping of any water, this feature adding materially to the sanitary nature of, the article. I l 3 Still another object of the invention is to provide an article having means which, when the same is used as a drinking fountain, will provide a drinking cup, and when used as an ordinary faucet, will form a means for eliminating the splash or spray of the water as it leaves the discharge end thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 represents an elevational view of an ordinary faucet structure showing the application of the invention thereto.
Fig. '2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the invention, the same being useid as the discharge spout of the faucet, an
Fig. 8 is a similar View with the device in use as a drinking fountain.
A further object ofthe invention is to Referring more particularly to this drawing, the reference character 1 denotes the valve casing of a faucet structure which also includes adischarge pipe 2, the flow of water thereto being controlled and regulated by the usual handle 3. In the present instance this discharge pipe 2 has an annular, bead 4 surrounding its discharge end,
which bead in thepresent application of the invention is adapted toprovide an attaching element. 7
The invention comprises the provision of an elbow-shaped discharge spout 5 preferably formed of sheet material and having one end disposed over and crimped around the bead 4 and the adjacent portions of the discharge pipe 2 as indicatedcat 6. In other words the material of which the spout 5 is constructed is such that an efficient joint can readily. be made between one end of the same and the discharge end of the pipe 2 by a suitable pressing operation. However, the nature of the joint is such as to readily permit the spout 5 to be swung about the pipe 6 fromv the position shown in Fig. 2 to that depicted in Fig. 3 and vice versa. It is the purpose of the invention to have the spout automatically returned by gravity action to the position of Fig. 2 after having been manually moved to the Fig. 3 position.
The dischargeend of the spout 5 is pro vided with an annular lip 7, and spaced inwardly thereof is an annular rib 8. Surrounding the discharge end portion of the spout and slidable thereon is a collar 9, the same being of a larger diameter than the portion of the spout which it surrounds and having an annular lip 10 on its inner end for operative engagement with the lip 7 and rib 8. As may be clearly seen from Fig. 2, the lip 7 extends outwardly and the lip 10 inwardly. The collar 9 is further provided with an outwardly projecting flange 11 at its outer end. When the discharge end of the spout 5 is disposed downwardly, as for instance when the article is being used as an ordinary faucet structure, the collar 9, which is in effect a cup, extends upwardly of said spout discharge end, the lips 7 and 10 then being in engagement. The provision of the cup of larger diameter than the adjacent portion of the spout 5 eliminates the possibility of the discharged water from splashing or spraying as it flows from the spout. On the other hand when the device is to be used as a drinking fountain and is arranged as in Fig. 3, the lip 10 is in contact with the rib 8, the cup having been retracted by gravity action so that the collar 9 is positioned inwardly of the discharge end of the spout 5 and the flange l1 cooperated with the lip 7 to form a drinking fountain reservoir. As hereinbefore mentioned it is necessary to manually move the spout from the- Fig. 2 position to that shown in Fig. 3, but that said spout will be returned to its normal position upon release. This prevents the accumulation of water within the spout after the same has been used as a drinking fountain and permits the same to be readily and thoroughly cleaned when disposed downwardly.
From the foregoing description, it will be observed that when the spout is held in a drinking position, the flared flanges 7 and 11 are matched to form a wide, uninterrupted drinking ledge, and owing to the fact that the cup member is loosely mounted upon the end of the spout, it is capable of being shifted about its axis, so that the forward lip edge of the flange, which is the convenient portion for drinking purposes, will be changed from time to time by the user, and by such change, a cleansed surface is insured at the point that the user places the I lips.
flow of water will have a slight expansion tendency against the inner walls of the cup 9, which is of slightly greater diameter than the end of the discharge spout, and thus the column will be again deflected downwardly in the larger area to insure against spattering, which might otherwise occur if the flanges 7 and 11 were matched.
Briefly, the inner walls of the cylindrical cup form a slight expansion chamber for the column of water to reduce the liability of the column spattering when discharged.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described including a loosely pivoted spout, a cup of greater diameter than the spout and having a limited sliding engagement with the discharge end of the latter, said cup being extended beyond the discharge end of the spout when the same is disposed downwardly whereby to eliminate splashing of the liquid discharge and a flange extended from the outer end of the cup and cooperating with the discharge end of the spout to form a drinking fountain when the latter is disposed upwardly.
2. A device of the class described including a loosely pivoted spout, a sleeve having a limited sliding engagement on the discharge end of the spout, cooperating annular lips on the inner end of the sleeve and the discharge end of the spout, an annular rib on the spout spaced inwardly from the lip of the spout and adapted to be engaged by the lip of the sleeve, and a flange extending from the outer end of the sleeve and cooperating with the neck of the spout when the latter is swung upwardly to form a drinking fountain.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Oconomowoc in the county of Waukesha and State of Wisconsin.
