WILLIAM A. GINNERY AND EDWARD O. SLOAN, OF BREMEN, OHIO.
CAP FOR MILK-BOTTLES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed March 29, 1918.
Y 'o m! whom it may concern Be it known that we, VILLIAM A. GIN- NERY and EDWARD U. SLoAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Bremen, in the county of F airfield, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Cap for Milk-Bottles and the like; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventlon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved cap for milk bottles and the like, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide means whereby the cap is carried permanently by the neck of the milk bottle. said means to e actuated for removing the cap, when it is desired to use the contents of the bottle.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved cap constructed of any suitable material, preferably sheet metal, for instance sheet tin, copper, aluminium and the like, preferably aluminium.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal cap provided with a marginal upstanding annular flange, said flange being yieldable, and adapted to be contracted in diameter when forcing the cap in contact with the supporting shoulder of the open end of the bottle. for holding the cap frictionally in place.
A further object of the invention is to provide a flan e on the cap provided with scallops or V-s aped cuts, so that the parts between the scallops or cuts may yield outwardly to hold the cap frictionally in place.
If desired the scallops or cuts may be dis pensed with, and in either case the cap may be formed by placing the sheet metal over a former and pressing the same to form the flange.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a. month end of a bottle, showing the cap applied, illustrating the means for permanently attaching the cap to the bottle.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the mouth end of the bottle, showing the cap removed, but attached to the bottle.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
Serial No. 225,410.
Fig. 1. showing the cap engaging the shoulder of the month end of the bottle.
Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of the cap showing the scallops or cuts of the flange dispensed with, however, in this case the cap is also to be permanently attached to the month end of the bottle.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the neck portion of a milk bottle, the mouth end thereof, and 3 the shoulder on the exterior of the neck, and surrounding the neck in engagement with the shoulder 23 is wire ring 4. This ri is made from a single length of wire wit its ends twisted together as shown at 5. Attached to the ring either to the twisted ends as at 6 in Fig. 1 or as at 7 in Fig. 2 is a suitable chain or the like 8, the other end of which is attached to an eye 9 carried by the cap 10. This eye is secured to the cap in any suitable manner, preferably as by a riveted holder 11. The mouth end of the bottle on its interior is provided with the usual su porting shoulder 12. The wall 13 of t 6 month end of the bottle, that is upwardly beyond the shoulder 12 is tapered slightly upwardly. in other words conical. The taper of this wall in reality, as is obviously known is hardly perceptible by the naked eye, but nevertheless the taper exists. The cap 10 is designed to be constructed from any suitable sheet metal preferably aluminium, and is designed to engage the shoulder 12. In forming the cap, by compressin the sheet metal over a former (not shown as is usually accomplished when forming a flange, the cap is provided with a mar inal annular flange 14, which is desi e to spring outwardly against the tapere wall 13, after the cap has been sprung by or passed the smaller diameter of the wall 13, thereby holding the cap frictionally in place. In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the flange 14 is provided with a plurality of scallops or cuts 15 (which may be any suitable shape), which form the intermediate lugs 16, which may more readily spring outwardly. In Fig. 4 the scallops or cuts are eliminated. It is to be noted that by means of the chain 8 the cap is permanently or at all times carried by the bottle, and when it is desired to remove the cap, a pulling action may be imparted on the chain, which will lift the cap from its seat from the mouth end of the bottle. By providing a large number of closely related elements adapted to individually spring into engagement with the substantially vertical inner wall of the bottle neck the structure is caused to form a tight joint at all points about the circumference of the bottle neck irrespective of whether the bottle neck describes a true circle or not, it being well known that a large proportion of the molded bottles commonly used are not truly circular.
The invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is A metallic cap for milk bottles and the like comprising a disk member of resilient material having an upstanding marginal flange, said marginal flange being closely notched with V-shaped notches around its upper edge thereby forming a pluralityof closely related spring lugs for engaging the vertical inner wall of a bottle neck and preventing displacement of the disk by frictionally binding against the inner face of the bottle neck at all points in the circumference thereof and below the top of said vertical wall. 7
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
