DEVICE FOR CREASING CARDBOARD AND THE LIKE.

Be it known that l, HERBERT O. Tirrrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of hio, have invented a new and useful Vimprovement in Devices for Creasinof Cardboard and the like, of which the following is a speciiication, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present apparatus relates to apparatus suitable for use on a press for creasing cardboard coverstock` and like material tor folders, booklet covers and similar articles. The apparatus is designed to be mounted in a job press and is so arranged that cardboard iolders may be quickly and readily creased and made ready for folding. Provision is made for adjusting the apparatus so that creases of any suitable width may be made and so that the creases may be made at any desired distance apart. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the :following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

The apparatus consists-of a chase or frame l adapted to be attached to the bed of a press. At the sides of the chase two straps 2 are mounted. These straps have offset ends 3 which are bolted or otherwise secured to the chase, the 'center portion of the strap standing away from and parallel to side Specification of Letters Patent.

traine members. Mounted through the offset\ port1onroi` the straps are two shafts 5 which have bevel gears 6 thereon. Carried through the straps are two pairs of worm screws 7 and 8 carrying bevel gears 9 at their outer ends, which mesh with the gears 6. At the center of the chase is a bar 10 in which the screws 7 and 8 are mounted, the ends of each pair of shafts abuttingas best seen in Fig. 6.
Mounted on the worm screws 7 and 8 are knurled rollers 11 and 12, the rollers 1l being secured to the ends of the screws 7 by set screws 13, while the rollers 12 are tapped and engage with the threads 14: oi the worm screws. Both pairs of shaits are to be rotated by means of the rollers 11, the rollers 12 being adapted to be screwed tight against the bar 10 to lock the screws after they have been turned tov adjust the dies.
The male dies of which two are Shown, are composed of two clamping members 15 which have extending ends or lingers 16 which slide over the end members of( the chase. These two members are provided with two alined apertures 17, the aperture in one of the members being threaded and adapted to engage with the threaded shafts so as to move along the same. To hold the clamping members together they are provided with apertures 18 in which set screws 19 are mounted. Between the two members is mounted the creasing blade 21 which has slots 22 to receive the set screws 19 and other slots 23 for receiving the shafts 7 and 8. f
The creasing blade may extend beyond the two clamping members any desired distance as shown in Fig. 7. It will be understood that several blades will be used, the blades being changed for` extremes in thicknesses of stock used. The blade may be readily changed `or adjusted between the members for creases of diiierent width or depth.
A plate 25 is used which will be suitably attached to the movable press bed and this plate is provided with a sheet 26 of card board or like material. The femaledie members are attached to this plate over the cardboard as shown in Fig. 6. These female members have a hook shaped end 28 and two flat strips 29 which have rounded edges 30. The front end is provided with a set screw Bladapted to engage the edge of the plate to hold the die members in position.
Along the top of the chase is a scale 32 lli) attached to one oit the male dies so that the position of the male dies may be quickly and accurately determined. A tter these have been set the position of the female dies is determined and a. line drawn on the cardboard. The dies are then hooked over Jthe plate and lined up, with the slot between the two strips in alinement with the lines on the cardboard and the creasing blade.
ln creasing' a cardboard Li0 after the position of the dies are determined, the cardboard sheet is placed inposition on the plate over the :temale dies and positioned in the usual manner by gage pins or the like and the plate and bed are then moved into engagement with the male dies until the dies are in the position illustrated in Fig. 7. When the board e() is removed it is folded and talres the form shown in Eig. 8.
By means of the adjusting mechanism the creasing blades may be quickly positioned in proper relation. in this type of worlr, the number of folders of any one size which are creased at one time is usually small and consequently the ease of positioningthe blades and the rapidity of changing` the blades is ot importance. The female members are oi a width suitable to the stock used and are changed for extreme differences on thickness of stock, several widths of dies being' usually available.
Other modes of applying the principle ot my invention may be employed instead ci the one explained, change beim;1 made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any et the following` claims or the equivalent ot such stated means be employed. l

A device for creasing cardboard, coverstock and the like, consisting of a frame adapted to be secured to a press, a bar mounted across the center of said frame, two pairs of Worm screws rotatably mounted in said frame and said bar, tWo creasing blades mounted in said frame and having threaded connection with said screws, a scale attached to one of said creasing blades and extending beyond the other blade, means for rotating said screws to position said blades independently of each other, and means for locking each of said blades in its adjusted positions. l0. A female die member for creasing cardboard, coverstock and the like, comprising a hooked end member adapted to engage over the edge of a plate, two spaced strips attached to said end member, and a second end member provided With clamping means.
