UNITED srares' PATENT cri ics.
NILES I-I. ANDERSON, OF NORTH EASTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOY VEHICLE.
nsc'nsao.
Application filed December 15, 1919.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NILES H. ANDERSON, citizen of the United States, residing at North Easton, county of Bristol Commonwealth of hilassachusetts, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Toy Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy wheeled vehicles and particularly to that type propelled by a direct pushing of the foot. These 11ttle carts or coasters have proved to be a popular and desirable means both of amuse ment and exercise at certain stages in the childs development. The requisites of such an article are that they be sufficiently inexpensive to be available at a reasonable figure for a limited period of use, and that they be strong enough to withstand the rough usage of childhood both indoors and out. It is furthermore highly desirable that they be capable of being packed snugly either for shipment or storage. The problem of making an inexpensive article in. knockdown form and at the same time to have it sufhciently strongto avoid any pos sible accident involves a good many difficulties.
The object of my invention is to provide an article of this type which will meet these requirements. In the form which I have selected as illustrative of my invention, I have shown an embodiment fully meeting these requirements and at the same time possessing various features of advantageancl improvement.
Throughout specification and drawings like reference characters are employed to indicate corresponding parts, and in the drawings: 1 i 9 l t Figure I is a general view of a device in accordance with my invention.
Fig/II a partly sectional view of frame and seat member assembled.
Fig. III a section through the seat memher on theline 3--3, Fig. 2.
Figs. IV and V fragmentary views illus trative of the manner of assembly of frame and seat member. i
Fig. VI a view of the'handlel i Fig. VII a view ofthe wheeled steering post, and
Fig. VIII a detail of an axle screw.
In-the form' shown, I provide a frame member 1 adapted to be disposed in an in- ;clined fore and aft position. This member Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
Serial No. 344,975.
is preferably of flat stock such as a plank from which it may be conveniently shaped.
in its position in the device it is disposed vertically edgewise and has formed on its upper edge intermediate of its ends a seat hearing 2. On its lower rear end it has a transverse bore 3 in which is lodged a wooden axle bearing l on the ends of which are rounded wheels In theends of the axle bearing are set screws consisting of a long threaded shank 6 and a smooth bearing portion 6 and a slotted end 6 for seating the screw in the axle hearing. The portion 6 is transversely bored for acotter-pin 6 At its upper and forward :portion, the frame l is flattened and widened as at 10, the transverse dimension of 10 being Wider than the thickness of the main portion of the frame 1. In this portion 10 is a bearing 9 for the steering post 11. t On the lower end of the steering post 11 is a forked ortion '12 in which is thefron-t wheel 13. ust belowthe flattened forward portion 10 of the frame a reduced and rounded neck portion 8, which, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 3 is intermediate ofthe seathearing 2 and the flattened end 10. Justbelow this and in the same horizontalplane when assembled as the bearing 2 iSna portion 7 -\Vl1l(3ll 1E5 soshaped as to substantially fill the slot 'li of the scat member 15. The slot 14, in the; seat member 15 is intermediate of the opening 3 in the frame 1.] "This is preferably held in proper secured position bya pint The seat member 15 is then turned at right angles to the framel. andtheflattened end 10 of the frame 1 slipped through the slot 14 as shown in Fig. 4. As soon as the flattened portion 10 has passed through i the slot and the neck 8 is lodged thereln, the seat may be rotated so that its: fore and aft line lies in the same plane as the frame" 1, in which position it may be brought down on a'shoulder 2 where it will'find' afirm b'earingand in which. positionit .wi'llnbe substantially held fby the 1 comparatively snug fit of the .piortionflmwithin th'slota;
Fig. 2, and the portion '7 and slot 14 are made to .fit with corresponding faces 7 and 7 The post 10 is then thrust up through the bearings 16 and 9 and the steering handle 17 pinned on in place on the end of the post.
The handle 17 has a broad flat end bearing 17 lying immediately about its post receiving aperture 17 This lower face 1'7 is set so as to act as a stop against the face 10 inflthe short bevel cut on the end of the flattened portion 10 of the frame and .just outside the bearing 9 so that the end portion is not weakened.
It will therefore be seen that my devicewhile capable of being quickly reduced to substantially flat and easily packed elements, is when assembled a very sturdy structure interlocking in such a way that it may almost be said to be assembled without fastening.
Furthermore the characteristic of the seat and framemembers in addition to providing an interlocking gives a separation to the bearings 9 and 16 so that the post 11 is held in its proper vertical position firmly and evenly against rack and strain which is always thrown on this member of such a device. The fork 12 having a flat 7 upper portion 12 receives the direct thrust and the forward factor of the users weight as. it bears on the seat 15. It will therefore be seen that the rounded portion 8 of the frame which is straddled by the child is conveniently and comfortably adapted to its purpose. It is so disposed as to receive the crotch pressure as the device is propolled by the childs feet and to transmit that pressure both as a pull on the rear wheels and as a push on the front wheel.
Various modifications may obviously be made in details of design, structure and assembly as well as in material and equip ment, all without departing from the spirit of my invention if within the limits of the appended claims.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
-1-. A vehicle of the class described comprising an inclined frame member of flat stocksetverti'cally edgewise and having a horizontal shoulder formed 'on the upper edge thereof intermediate of its ends and having its upper end transversely flattened and a vertical bearing through said fiatt'ened portion; a wheeled axle thrust transf versely through the lower end of said frame fsaii; frame and bearing; said "seat member havin a longitudinal slot between its ends of substantially a cross section of the Hattened bearing end of the frame, and said frame being reduced and rounded below said flattened end of the chamber substantially equal to the depth of the flattened portion of the frame end to permit the frame to be turned after being passed through said seat slot. and a wheeled steering post passed through the vertieal hearing of said frame and seat members. and a steering handle on said steering post 2.
