Application led September 8, 1920. Serial No. 408,995.
To all 'whom 'it 'may concern Be it known that l, EDWARD SAUNDRY, a citizen ot the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skates; and I do hereby declare the following,v when taken 1n connection with the accompanying draw-ings and thc characters of reference marked thereon, to 4be a full, clear, and enact description oi' the same, and which said drawings constitute part oi? this application, and

This invention relates to an improvement in skates. either ice or roller, and particularly to skates which are secured to the shoe by means oit clamps moved by a right and lett-hand screw.
The object ot this invention to mount a kev in the screw so that it will always be convenient- 101' use, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and j )articularly recited in the claims.
ln ea rr ying out my invention il employ' the usual toe-piece 10, mounted in the usual manner upon a runner 11. Supported in the usual way is a right and lett-hand screw 12 formed with an external grooved rib 13, by which it is held against longitudinal movement. The usual clamps 111 and V15 are mounted on this screw to be moved thereby. This screw is formed with a round, longitudinal passage 16, forming a shoulder 17 near one end, which end is formed with an angular hole 18. Into the passage is inserted a key stem 19, preferably round in cross section so as to pass through the hole 18,
through which it projects and to which end a handle 2() is secured as herein shown by set-screw 21. The opposite end oi the stem is formed with a round head 22 corresponding to the recess 1G, and within the head, with an angular neck 23 corresponding to the hole 18. When it is desired toturn the screw to adjust the clamps, the key stem is drawn outward until thc neck Q13 enters the hole 18, and the withdrawal o1 the key is prevented by the engagement ot1 the head 22 with. the shoulder 17. `The handle 20 is 'tormed with wings Zet and 25 which may be entered beneath spring fingers .36 and 27 when in the retired position.
ldith this `construction the key is always ready for use and it is only necessary to d'aw it out so that the neck Q3 engages with the hole '1S to provide means tor turning the screw 12. rlhus the possibility of losing a key in key-adjusting skates is avoided.
l', claim:
1. In a screnhclamp skate, the combination with a right and left-hand screw formed with a longitudinal opening of clamps mounted on said screw, a key mounted in said screw and longitudinally movable therein, and means for engaging the key with one end oit the screw.

Ina screw-clamp skate, the combina tion with a right and left-hand screw of clamps mounted thereon, said screw formed with a longitudinal opening communicating with an angular hole at one end, a key stern arranged within said screw and projecting' through said openino', said stem formed at its inner end with an angular neck fitting' said hole, and provided at its outer end with a handle.
3. In a screw-clamp skate, the combination with a right and leithand screw ot' clamps mounted thereon, said screw formed with a longitudinal opening communicating with an angular hole at one end. a key stem arranged within said screw and projecting through said opening, said stem formed at its inner end with a head and an angular neck itting said hole` and provided at its outer end with a handle, and spring fingers engaging with the ends of said handle.
