To all Jw hom t may conce/Mt Be it known that I, Louis A. NnGRAvAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudsonand State of New Jersey, have invented a cer tain new and useful improvement in Jewelry-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to ornamental boxes intended to contain articles of jewelry and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a box combining lightness and strength, which may be easily and cheaply manufactured, not liable to `distortion by changes in atmospheric conditions, nently durable, and neat and attractive in appearance. l

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts by which the above objects are at tained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.

The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show the construction of the improved box, with the ornamental lining, covering, and other accessories omitted.

The box comprises an upper and a lower member hinged together at the rear. The lower member is made up of a strip of metal Specification of Letters Patent.

A bent to form a frame having the shape of the box in plan and shown as rectangular, with the ends abutting or lying adjacent each other at the center of the rear face as at the open oint a.

Vithin the frame is a disk B serving as i i the bottom of the box, matching tothe frame and preferably of liber board or other strong but light material, and a lining strip C of the sameor like material, bent to rectangular form, resting upon thedisk B and fitted snugly to theinner face of the frame. Its ends abut at the front as at c opposite to the frame junction a so as to break joints with thelatter. The disk B and lining strip C are held by folding `the upper and lower margins of the metal frame A upon the upper edge of the strip C, and upon the lower margins of the disk B respectively.

The upper portion orimember of the box may be similarly shaped and assembled but is shown as having its disk or top E swelled or domed, and restingon a lining strip F, inclosed in aframe D and held by folding the margins of the frame upon the margins of the disk E and beneath the lower edge of i the strip F. A similar staple H is inserted in like manner through the frame D and strip F and clenched upon the face of the upper leaf of the hinge J.

Thus joined, the upper and lower boxmembers are each securely locked upon their disks and lining strips, and both are reliably held to the hinge without other fas= tening means. Notches a2 at the ends of the lower frame, see Fin'. 7, and similar notches d2 in the upper Frame provide for the reception of the barrel of the hinge.

The lining strips C and F may be as thick as desired in producing an effect of solidity Without materially affecting the Weight of the box, and by making the frames of metal and the disks and lining strips of lighter material, the desired strength and rigidity is attained with a minimum of I Weight. The metal frames locked upon the paper parts insure against warping or distortion of' such parts, and maintain the box members in Yproper relation to each other through `the positive engagement with the leaves of the hinge.

It will be understood that the box vmay be equipped with jaws and forms for the reception of the article to be held, and may be lined and covered with any desired rieh material adapted to provide the required finish and enhance the appearance.

Modifications may be made in the forms and proportions of thel parts Without departing from the principle of the invention. The top E may be flat similar to the bottom B, or these parts and the contour of the box may be varied as desired or dictated by the shape of the article to be inclosed.

l. A box member comprising a disk, a non-metallic lining strip with one edge mounted upon adjacent face of said disk,

a metallic frame f surrounding said lining with its opposite edges bent parallel with and engaging the opposite face of said disk and the one exposed edge of said lining strip, and means passed through said lining strip and frame and joining the ends of the latter.

2. The box member described. comprising a disk, a lining strip mounted on edge at the margins of said disk, a metal frame in closing said strip and edges of said disk. with the margins of said frame folded upon said disk-margins and the exposed edge ol' said strip, and with the ends of said frame lying adjacent each other. a hinge applied on said box member, and fastening meansl extending through said ends. strip. and hinge, for joining said ends and holding` said box member to said hinge.

The box member described, eomprisinpr a disk, a lining strip mounted on edge al the margins of said disk, a metal frame inclosing said strip and edges of said disk. with the margins of said frame folded said disk-margins and the exposed edge ol' said strip, and with the ends of said frame lying adjacent each other, a hinge applied on the interior of such box member. and a staple having its arms extended through said ends, strip, and hinge. and lolded upon the latter.

4. The box described, comprising an up per and lower box member, each consisting of a disk, a lining strip, and a metal `traine inclosing said disk and strip.y with its mar gins folded upon said disk and strip. a hinge on the interior of such box. u staple having its arms extended through the adjacent ends of such upper frame, strip and Vhinge-leaf and folded upon such leaf. and

a second staple having its arms extended through the adjacent ends of such lower frame, strip and hinge-leaf and folded upon the latter.
