UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED J. TRIGWIE ILL, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
BATTERY-PLATE.
fatness Application filed April. 16,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRE J. TRIGWELL, a subject of the Kin of Great Britain, and a resident of San dose, in the county of danta Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Battery-Plates, of which the following is a' specification.
The grid of a battery plate is subjectto varying degrees of temperature when in use which causes alternate expansion and contraction of its several parts. This expansion and contraction causes the loosening of the filling material, parts of which fall'down between adjacent plates, thereby necessitating the use of separators to prevent short circuiting of the said plates and reducing their efficiency and shortening the life of the strain to which the sides of the grid, or the frame, are subjected frequently results in their complete rupture. v A
It is the object of the present invention to provide a grid so formed and constructed as to permit the proper expansion and contraction of the grid frame and the cell walls therein without rupturing any part of the grid. A further object isto provide a structure that can expand and contract withoutl dislocating the filling material.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a battery plate embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on 2-2 of Fig. 1 as formed ready to be filled.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on 22 of Fig. 1 after filling and after the forming 'is completed.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the frame portion of a battery plate grid, the same usually being made of lead and of suitable proportions. At one or more points, preferably at the corners of the frame, the same is formed into loops as at 2, the said loops curving outwardly in the embodiment shown. The frame 1 and the intersecting cell walls 3 are formed inte- Specification of Letters Patent.
Furthermore, as now constructed' Patented Feb. 1, 1921. i920. Serial No. 374,465.
grally with retaining flanges if: encompassing the opening of each cell on one side of the filling materlal has been placed in position these cell walls are bent inwardly as shown at 6 to form flanges corresponding to flanges 4 so that the material in each cell is securely held in position and cannot be dislodged except by its entire disintegration.
It may now be seen that any unusual strain on frame 1 due to the alternate heat ing and cooling of the plate is readily taken up by the loops 2, and any distortion of the cells in the plate through the alternate expansion and contraction of the cell walls, does not materially affect the filling in the cells or the operation thereo since the flangesd and 6 effectually hold be material in position. While loop 2 may be located in any desired position the corner is deemed best since in that position it readily allows for the expansion and contraction of two sides. It is to be understood that in using the tern1i loop in the following claims any formation is included in which an excessive length is provided in the frame without increasing its principal proportions.
It is furtherunderstood that changes in form and construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A battery plate havingan expansion loop formed in the frame thereof.
2-. ,A battery grid having an expansion loop formed in two of the opposite corners thereof. 7
3. A battery plate comprising a grid having an expansion loop formed in the frame thereof and having means formed integrally therewith to prevent the dislocation of filiing material from the cells thereof.
