RECIPROCATING SAW.
Application filed June 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. .lQL'IAS S. Horrs'rao, citizen of Norway, residing Casper, in the county of Natrona and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Reciprocating tlaws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others slrlledin the art to which it appertaii'is to make and use the The invention relates to improvements in reciprocating saws.
The object of the present invention 15 to improve the construction of reciprocating saws and to provide a simple, practical and eilicient reciprocating saw designed particu-- larly tor cutting; down and equipped with an adjustable clamping device adapted tube readily applied to a tree and capable of being easily and quickly removed therefrom when the operation of sawing has been completed.
lllith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying rawing and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the term, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any oi the advantages of the invention.
in the drawing: 1
Figure .1 is side elevation oi? a reciprosaW constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 o1 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view through the clamp and the saw supporting; means, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. lis detail sectional View illustrat inp; the construction oi the block through which the spring; is secured, the view being taken on line on ofFig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of one or the members or sections of the tree clamp.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the other member of the tree clamp.
Like numerals of reference designate cor responding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the trees Specification of Letters Patent.

invention, the reciprocating saw comprises in its construction a blade or saw proper 1, provided. at one end with a handle 2, and connected by a pivotB at the other end with one end of the spring 4-. The saw blade is provided at its rear end with a hinge ele i ..ent 5 constructed of suitable material and composed of spaced sides and connecting portions or eyes 6, which receive the pivot 3 and which also receive the lower end 7 of the spring 4t. The lower end 7 of the spring l provided with an eye and is arranged between the eyes of the hinge element 5. The hinge element bolted, riveted or otherwise secured to the saw blade.
The spring, which supports the rear end of the saw and. assists the operation thereof by urging thesaw in. one direction, is curved at the top and its upper end 8 is secured by a suitable fastening device 9 in a slot. 10 of.
:rbloclr 11. The block 11 fitted at one side oi? a tree against the same and the spring curves upwardly and outwardly and then downwardly, asclearly illustrated in. Fin", 1 of the drawing.
The block is adjustably and detachably secured to the tree 12 by means of a clamp composed of sections 13 and 14, which are curved longitudinally, as shown, and which are constructed of suitable metal of sufficient strength to firmly grip the tree and support the spring and the saw. The section 141 is provided intermediate of its ends with a quarter bend 15, and its outer portion16 is angularly bent to form an approximately L-shaped arm. The L-shaped arm or portion is fitted in the slot 10 of the block and is secured to the latter by a pin 18, or other suitable fastening device. The inner curved portion of the section 14:, which has its inner side edge presented to the tree, extends through a slot 19 in an angularly bent outwardly extending terminal portion 20 of the section 13 which is curved longitudinally. The arm 20 is ar ranged at the inner end of the section 13, which is provided at its outer end with a threaded opening 21 for the reception of a clamping screw 22 and the latter projects inwardly from the clamp at one end thereof and it is adapted to grip and engage firmly the tree at a point diametrically opposite the block, which has an inner curved face 23 to conform to the configuration of the tree. The curved clamp, which is adjustablelongitudinally, is provided at its section 14 slipping off the tree.
with a series of teeth 24 which are adapted to engage the arm 20 at the outer end wall of the slot 19, and the said clamp extends to a pointslightly beyond the center so that the major portion of the tree will be embraced by the clamp, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing so that there will be no liability of the clamp accidentally Throughthe longitudinal adjustment of the members of the clamp the latter is adapted to be readily applied to trees of different diameters and may be quickly removed from the same to detach the saw when the operation of sawing has been completed. The saw may be employed for operating on trees while in a standing condition, and also after the same have been cut down and it is desired to cut the trees up into logs.
The inner face of the block may be provided with projections or spurs 25 for engaging the tree to cooperate with the screw 22, which has a pointed inner engaging end 26. The section 14 constitutes a ratchet member and the other section a pawl member and the screw may be arranged in the desired position to confine the tree in the clamp.
What is claimed is:
A clamp for securing the actuating spring of a saw to a tree comprising an elongated block secured to the spring and having a transversely curved inner side provided adjacent its upper and lower ends with spurs adapted to be embedded in the tree, a longitudinally curved arm having a resilient bend adjacent one end and secured at that end to the block at a point between the ends thereof and extending from one lateral side thereof and provided along its outer edge with a plurality of ratchet teeth, a second curved resilient arm having one end provided with an outwardly directed slotted angular extension receiving the first arm to pivotally and adjustably connect the seei ond arm to the first arm and adapted to coact with one of said ratchet teeth to secure the second arm in adjusted position with respect to the first arm, an inwardly directed screw having threaded connection with the other end of the second arm and adapted to be embedded in a tree at a point opposite the block, and an outwardly directed handle carried by said other end of the second arm.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
