Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
Application mea June 28, 1919. "Serial no. 307,288;
justable, compressing filing devicefor cards and the like.
The principal object of the present in vention is to provide a filing device which may be readily inserted and secured in position in any standard drawer or container to convert the same into a filing drawer par ticularly adapted for cards, letters and other records or documents. V i
A fhrther object of the invention is to so construct the filing device that it maybe adjusted to fit any size drawer'orycentainer, and provided witha removable :Eollower or compressor member which is readily movable to any desired position to vary the capacity of the filing space, and automatically lock in any position to which it is moved. t
Still another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable compressor for card index drawers having a rigidand compact construction.
The foregoing and other objects, together with their attendant advantages, will be apparent as the invention becomes better understood by reference to the accompanying; specification and drawings forming a part thereof, it being premised, however, that changes may be made in the materials employed and details of construction Within the scope of the appendedclaims without departing from the spirit ofthe invention. Figure l is a perspective View showing one form ofmy'inventionin adjusted p0sition within a drawer. Fig. 2 isan enlarged detail view of a portion of the construction illustrated in Fig". 1; Fig; 3 is a perspectiveview of a modified form of follower.
Fig. 4is a detail view partly broken away illustrating a slightly modified for of my invention, and
a Fig; 5is a*sectionalview'ontheliiieV-AT of Fi 4. y y
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have illustrated in Fig. theapplication or my improved filing device to a drawer or container 1 which may qr may not be provided on either or both sides thereof with one'or more usual grooves 2. The iniproved filing device preferably comprises a main partition member l constructed or any suitable material and provided at either or both ends With-suitable fastening inn es 5. It will be understood that where the eviceis intended for useih a dravveror container not provided With slots or groovesfl, the flanges 5 arenecessarily provided, While ifthe device is to be usedin a container having the usualslo tls 2, the ends maybe left straight as illustrated in Fig. 1 to fit the said grooves.
The opposite edges 6 of tliepartitionmemher are inturned to provide suitable guidewaysfor a follower member hereinafter described. A portion of cheer the edest is n'eferably out awayto provide an opening or space 7 for the insertion ofthe fhllower 8. The follower, which he also constructed or sheet metalor like material, preferably comprises a head portion 9 stamped from the mainbody thereof and bentto a position at substantially right angles to" the body. In inserted position the head 9 Islidably en gages the guideii aysfbrinedhy the inturned edges 6 inain'tainingthefollower in proper position. One portion ofthe head is illus (rated as provided with pair of teeth or projections 10 adapted to engage suitahly spaced openings 11 formed in the base of one or the gnideways; Ifdesired; in place for the openings 11 I niayen ploycon rugations or projections 12, alsw'ill he well understood The height'of the follower or compressor member 8 is preferably slightly less than the height of the partition 4 so that when the follower is in position in the/guide ways it may he rocked to assume aninclined position with relation to thefcontainer. It
is held in su ch' positionby the engagement of one of theloclring pre1ections10with depressions: or openings 11; or corrugations insaid scribed.
12, and the engagement of a portion of the head 9 with the other guideway. It will be apparent that the follower may be readily reversed to adapt the device for use in either a right or left hand drawer or position.
I may, if desired, form suitable reinforcing ribs or beads such as the one shown at 14, Fig. 3, in the follower member 8 to increase the rigidity thereof.
In order that the filing device may be used in drawers or containers of various sizes, it is desirable in some instances to form the partition member in separate pieces adaptedto slide with relation to each other, as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5. When such aconstruction is employed, I preferably provide the body of the partition l with guide lugs 15 adapted to receive the supplemental portion or extension 16 of such width that it is readily slidable in the space formed by the guide lugs.
It will be apparent that in case it is desired to employ the device with comparativelylarge drawers or containers, that two or more main body members may be adjustably and cooperatively assembled in any telescopic or other suitable manner.
I claim: V j
. 1. A device of the character described, comprising a partition member, a guideway formed thereon, andan adjustable compressing follower slidable in said guideway, said follower having projections formed thereon and said guideway having an irregular surface for engagement with one or the other of said projections to hold the follower in inclined position, substantially as described.
2. Aadevice of the character described, comprising a partition member, guideways formed thereon, and an adjustable compressing-follower slidable in said guideways, one of said guideways being provided with locking means for holding the follower in ad justed position, substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described,
eomprising a metallic partition member having its opposite edges inturned to form opposed guideways, means for securing said member in operative position within a container, andan adjustable follower slidable guideways, substantially as de- 4; A device of the character described, comprising a metallic partition member having its opposite edges inturned to form opposed guideways, means for securing said I member in operative position within a container, and an adjustable follower slidable in said guideways, one of said guideways beingprovided with locking means for holding the follower in adjusted position, substantially as described. 7 I 5. A reversible follower for card index drawers adapted to occupy different inclined ositions com risin a main bod member I compressing follower having a head of less height than said partition member slidable in said guideways, and locking projections on said head for maintaining the follower in adjusted position, substantially as described.
7. A reversible follower for card indexes adjustable to different inclined positions comprising a main body member, a head extending at substantially right angles thereto and projecting from opposite sides of the body member, and a pair of locking projections formed on said head, one of said projections being effective for holding the follower in each inclined position, substantially as described.
8. A device of the character described. comprising a partition member, guideways formed thereon, and an adjustable compressing follower slidable in said guideways, said member being provided with locking means i i for holding the follower in adjusted position, substantially as described.
9. A device of the character described. comprising a partition member, gnideways formed-thereon and an adjustable follower slidable in said guideways, said member being provided with locking means for bold ing the follower in inclined position at various points, substantially as described.
10. A device of the character described, comprising a sectional partition member. guideways formed thereon, and an adjustable follower slidable in said guideways. said member being provided with locking means for holding the follower in adjusted position, substantially as described.
11. A device of the character described. comprising a telescopic partition member. guideways formed thereon and an adjustable compressing follower slidable in said guideways, one of said guideways being provided with locking means for holding the follower in adjusted position, substantially as described.
12. A device of the character described, comprising an extensible partition member having its opposite edges intnrned to form opposed guideways, means for securing said member in operative position within a container, and an adjustable follower slidable in said guideways, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
