To (HZ whom it may concern:
lie it known that 1, A rman ltnnvns, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at 133 Sommerville road, Small Heath,Birmingham, in the county of farwiclr, England, works manager, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to the Hinges for Lens- Bezels of MotonCar Lamps,'and which improvements are applicable to hinges for boxes and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to the hinges of the lens bezels of motor car lamps, but is applicable to hinges for bones and the hire, the improvements comprising a hinge which is entirely contained within the lamp or other article in connection with which it is used, the object being to avoid any projections on the outer surface of the lamp or other article to which the hinge is applied.
According to the present invention, the
axis of the hinge is locted inwardly of the external surface or contour of the lamp or other body. One limb of the hinge is cranked or bowed to accommodate one of the edges at the joint whenthe hinge is in the open condition. This lamp may if desired involve an articulation.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended. explanatory two sheets of drawings, upon which Figure 1 illustrates a lamp constructed according to thepresent invention, with the bezel in the closed position.
Fig. 2 is a part sectional plan of the lamp shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a part sectional plan of the lamp shown in F igs. 1 and 2 with the bezel in the open position.
Fig. lillustrates separately the hinge shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Fig. 5 is a similar View to Fig. 2 but illustratinp' a modification.
Fig. 6 is a similar view to Fig. 2 but showing a further modification.
Fig. 7 illustrates the modification shown in Fig. 6 with the bezel in the open position.
In an embodiment of this invention, in which the hinge is adapted to be used in conjunction with the head lamp of a motor Patented Feb.
vehicle, the lens bezel ring a isadaptedto other aperture between the edge of the body and the front flanged edge of the rim.
Qne part of the hinge comprises a plate 0 which is secured to the inside of the body (l of the lamp, as for instance by rivets y'. The movable limb e of the hinge is articulated to the plate 0 at a position fadjacent to the edge of the body a.
The movable limb e of the hinge. which is attached to the bezel ring a is of V-for1nation, the arm g of the V being flanged at 71, and secured to the inside of the bezel ring, as for instance by rivets 2'. The aperture in the rim accommodates the movement of the l-shaped limb of the hinge when opening and closing, the hinge pivot being so arranged in relation to the joint between the bezel and the body that upon the initial operation of the opening of the bezel, the edge of the bezel which abuts against the edge of the body at a point adjacent the hinge is caused to clear the abutting edge of the body part of the joint. In Fig. 3 I have indicated in broken lines the path of the edge of the bezel in opening. The respective edges of the body I) and bezel a at the joint may if desired be curved to this are of movement so that while free opening and closing is permissible, a perfect joint is obtained when the bezel is in the closed condition.
For the purpose of stabilizing the hinge,
one end of a link it" is hinged to the V limb near the apex of the V, the other end of such link being hinged to one end of a second link 5, the other end of which second link is hinged to the plate 0 to which the V limb is hinged.
If desired, the links is, Z may be adapted it part m of the link being pivoted to a plate 79 appropriately secured to the lamp body d. ,-:---VVhatiI claim as imyi invention and desire to secure by Letters atent is 1. A lamp body open at one side, a rim around said openingand arranged on the inner side and projecting from the edge of the wall of the body, said rim having an opening, a bezel ring at the open side of the body, corresponding to the contour thereof and when closed abutting against "the edge'of the Wall ofthe body, and ahingev for said ring arranged with its piv- =otal axis Within the external contour of the 15 body,.]s0.. that the hinge is contained within the lamp when the ring is in closed position,
said hinge having. an arm attached to the v inner side of the bezel ring and operating in said opening of the rim.
2. A lamp body open at one side, a bezel ring at the open side of the body corresponding to the contour thereof and when closed abutting against the edge of the wall of the body, and a hinge for said ring arranged with its pivotal axis within the external contour of the body so that the hinge is contained within the lamp when the ring is in "closed position, said hinge comprising a quadrilateral structure hinged at its four corners and including an arm attached to the inner side of the bezel ring.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ALFRED REEVES.
