Description
J. GOLDBERG.
KNEE LIFTER PAD FOR SEWING MACHBNES'. APPLICATION FILED APR. 22} 1920 avwawto'c W W Patented Feb.1,1921,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB GOLDBERG, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GOLDBERG PADDING MACHINE COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
KNEE LIFTER-PAD FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Application filed April 22,
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB GOLDBERG, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knee LiftenPads for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
'An object of my invention is to provide a pneumatic knee lifter pad for use with a knee lifter plate employed for operating the presser-foot of a sewing machine for instance such as is shown in the patent to Goldberg No. 1,187,724.
Another object of my invention is to provide a soft contact for an operators knee when operating a sewing machine, thereby avoiding formation of calli on the knee.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of a pad embodying my invention, attached to a presserfoot operating lever.
Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view, on an enlarged scale of a knee lifter pad embodying my invention and mounted on a knee lifter plate.
Fig. 3, is an enlarged end view of a pad embodying my invention, part of the pad being broken away.
My invention comprises an air-filled chamber between layers of rubber and forming a pneumatic pad that may be attached to a lifting plate.
The pad A, comprises an upper layer or pad section a, and a lower layer or pad section a, of rubber, the outer edges of the sections being united to form a chamber a between them. This chamber a is sealed,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
1920. Serial No. 375,726.
confining the air therein. At several places adj acent to the upper layer a, are formed a series of upwardly and inwardly extending lugs a adapted to engage a knee lifting plate B, and to secure the pad upon such lifter plate.
The rod O is attached to the presser-foot of a sewing machine. When upward pressure is exerted upon the pad A and the plate B, the foot of the machine is pulled up making it possible to feed material to the needle of the machine. Considerable upward pressure is required to pull the foot upward, and calli formed upon that portion of the operators limb engaging the knee plate B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture a pneumatic pad comprising a casing, an air chamber within the casing and means to attach the pad to a lifter plate of a sewing machine.
2. As a new article of manufacture a pneumatic pad comprising an upper and a lower pad section, an air chamber between the pad sections and lugs extending from one of the pad sections, and adapted to engage a lifter plate.
3. As a new article of manufacture a pneumatic pad, the combination of a casing having upper and lower sections united at their outer edges, an air chamber between the casing sections and lugs extending upwardly and inwardly from the outer edge of the pad.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed by name this 20th day of April, 1920.
JACOB GOLDBERG.
