TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb; 1, 1 921.
Application filed August 12, 1920. StrialNo/MQBS'I;
i particularly to a tool especially designed for repairing internal combustion engines.
The primary object of the invention 1s to provide a device of thischaracter whlch may be applied to a valve, while the same s positioned in its cylinder, for imparting rotary movement to the valve to accomplish the grinding thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character which may be adjusted for use with valves of-var1ous designs and one which may be readily and easily operated.
A still further object of the invention 13 the provision of a novel form of operating levers, whereby the force of the levers of the operating rod is evenly distributed throughout the body thereof, to eliminate binding of the working parts of the tool.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, wlthout de arting from the spirit of the invention.
eferring to the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevational v1ew of the tool.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the head of the bit.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. I
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View through one of the housings, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawing in detail. the reference character 5 designates the body portion of the tool, which is in the form of a relatively long rod having the opposed spiral grooves 6 and 7 formed therein, the upper extremity of the body portion 5 be ing supplied with the head 8 which has a swivel connection with the body 5 to permit movement of the body 5 with relationto the" head8.
On the opposite extremity ofthe body5, is a socketmember 9which is of any conven= tional form, and supports the bit 10, to be:
hereinafter "more any described.
ilperatlng on thebody 5, are the tubular housings 11 and 12, each of which isprovided with opposed pintles- 13 eaten dinglatorally from opposite sides thereoiipthe pintles being disposed in suitable openings provided. in the operating levers, whereby the levers may plvot with relation to the housings l1 and 12 during the operation thereof, and as shown, the upper housing 12- has pivotal connectionwith thelever 14 botweenthe walls of theyoke lidforming a part of the lever 14;
The-outer extremity ofthe lever M is curved as at 17 and has pivotalconnection with the link 18, as at 19, the lower eX- trernity of said link 18 extending inwardly as at 20 so that movement of the operating handle 21, which is carried on one end of the lever let, will. produce a relative movement of the housings 11 and 1.2, in opposite directions. i
In each of the housings 11 and 12 are the opposed springs indicated at 22, eachof which springs is curved and engages an arm indicated at 26, there being two of such arms in each housing, the arms being however pivotally supported therein, the upper ends thereof engaging the balls 24 which are supported by the camming ring 23 to move the upper ends of the arms 26 to cause the lower ends of the arms to move into predetermined notches 26, formed exteriorly of the sleeve 27. A spirally arranged web indicated at 28 is formed integral within each of the sleeves 27', which web is designed to move in the spiral grooves 6 and 7. From the foregoing it is obvious that when the ring 23 is moved to bring one of the arms 26 into engagement with the notches 26, the housing i moved continuously in one direction, and when the 28, which opening provides a clearance for one end of the shank 29, which is provided with an opening adapted to accommodate the transversely extending pin 30, whereby the head and shank are secured together, and since the central opening 28 is of a diameter larger than the diameter of the shank 29, it will be seen that free pivotal movement between the head and shank is permitted.
Pins 30 and 31 are carried by the head 27, andeach of these pins is mounted eccentrically of the relatively small heads 32, which heads 32 are disposed in openings formed in the first mentioned head, there being provided threaded members 33 operating in suitable openings formed in the head 27, the members 33 adapted to contact with the relatively small heads 52, to secure the same against rotation within their openings. From the foregoing it is obvious that these heads 32 may be adjusted, whereby the pins carried thereon may be regulated to cause the same to register with the openings usually provided in valve heads.
It will thus be seen that in the operation of the device, movement of the operating handle 21 causes the housings 11 and 12 to move longitudinally of the body 5, in opposite directions, causing the rotation of the bit in opposite directions at predetermined intervals, to the end that the valve, which has connection with the head 27, through the pins 30 and 31, is oscillated in its seat to accomplish the grinding of the valve and insuring a true seating thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a tool, body portion having opposed spiral grooves formed therein, housings operating on the body portion and having a sleeve movable within each housing, each sleeve having notches formed therein, arms supported within the housings, spring members contacting with the arms and adapted to normally force the arms into the notches, means for moving the arms into and out of operation, and means for moving the housings longitudinally of the body portion to rotate the body portion in opposite directions.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, 1 have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
