ASSIGNORS TO INDIANA LAMP COMPANY, OF CONNERSVILLE, INDIANA, A COR- PORATION.
LAMP CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES L. DE MARTIN and WILLIAM M. MA'I'IEOLI, citizens of the United States, and residents of Connersville, county of Fayette, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Lamp Construction; and we do hereby declare that the-following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a lamp construction for a head light or spot light used in connection with automobiles, motor boats and the like, and more specifically to the means for securing the front door or lens rim to the lamp casing, whereby it will be more readily and easily mounted or detached therefrom.
The main object of the invention is to secure the door of the lamp to the lamp casing by a spring engaging means which will permit its being removed therefrom by simply pressing a button, and will at the same time draw the door inwardly against the lamp casing under spring tension so as to cause it to wedge or seat thereon for sealing it and preventing dust and moisture from entering said casing, and also compensate for the variation in the thickness of lens and the thickness in the metals.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application Figure 1 is a central vertical cross section through a lamp. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the lamp showing the detaching button.
In the drawing there is shown a lamp having a casing 10 with an outer circular flange portion 11 which is provided with a bead 12. However the flange portion 11 may be formed as an outwardly tapering surface without the bead 12 thereon. There is a lamp door or lens rim 13 in which is secured a lens 14 which is held in position by the spring ring 15. Mounted within said casing there is a reflector 16 having a lamp 17 mounted therein with the usual electrical connections 18. The reflector and lamp may be mounted in any suitable manner, the construction of-which does not form a part of this invention.
Mounted on opposite sides of the lamp casing there are springs 19 and 20, securely fixed at their innerends to said lam-p. casing and having outwardly projecting hook portions '19 and 20' respectively extending throu h suitable slots in the flange portion 11. he spring 20 is operated by a button 21 secured thereon and extending through the lamp casing so as to be externally operated for forcing said projecting hook 19 down and out of engagement with the lamp door 13.
In mounting the lamp door on the casing, 1t is first engaged over the hook portion 19 of the spring 19, and brought downwardly and forced over the lower portion of the casing when the spring 20 is pushed inwardly by the button 21. In this movement spring 19 is forced downwardly and outwardly until the lower portion of the door is in its proper position at which time hook portion 19' of the spring 19 under its own tension, engaging the door forces it rearwardly so as to seat against the bead 12, and the button 21 being relieved permits the hook 20 to engage and force the lower portion of the door against said bead preventing the removal of said door excepting when the button 21 is pressed in so as to cause the hook portion 20 of the spring 20 to be disengaged. A felt washer 22 is mounted around the button 21 adjacent the inner wall of the casing to prevent dust and moisture entering through the hole therein, and is held in place by the spiral spring 23 between said washer and spring.
The invention claimed is:
In a lamp structure including a lamp casing, a non-rotatable door adapted to fit over the front of said casing, a plurality of leaf springs secured to the inner wall of said casing at one end and having the other end turned outwardly to form an outwardly and rearwardly extending hook portion in position to engage the rear portion of said door and force it rearwardly uniformly and longitudinally of the casing and wedge it tightly against said casing so as to make a seal, and a button mounted on one of said springs and projecting through said casing for permitting said spring to be forced inwardly and cause said hook portion to disengage the door so as to permit its removal from the casing.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto affixed our signatures.
CHARLES L. DE MARTIN. WILLIAM M. MATTEOLI.
