RESISTANCE UNIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, VVILLTAM SoHwAonR- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Resistance Units, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to provide a resistance unit of simple and rugged construction and which may be economically manufactured. Another object is to provide means for readily and firmly mounting the unit endwise upon a support in fixed position. Another object is to adapt the unit to be mounted in a definite relative position to its support and to bring corresponding terminals in proper relative. position. Other objects and advantages will be undestood from the following description and accompanying drawings showing preferred'embodiments of my invention.
Figure 1 is `a longitudinal cross section of one form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a lower end view of the body of the unit showing the terminals in their relation thereto; Fig. 3 is a similar Vupper end view; Fig. l is a longitudinal cross section of another form of my invention; and Fig. 5 is a lower end view of the body portion and showing the terminals.
Referring to the particular form shown vin Figs. 1 to 3, the body portion of the unit is a tubev 10 ofearthenware, porcelain or other suitable insulating material. It has two longitudinally extending holes 11 and 12 parallel to each other and independent of each other. The resistance wire 13 is wound around the tubel and held in place and protected by an enamel coating 14, or other adhesive insulating and protective coating. i y
Extending through 'the hole 11 is conductor or lead 15 shown as a narrow strip of copper or other metal. The upper end of the strip is bent outwardly and flatwise through a notch 16 at the'upper top of the tube.l A few turns of the wire 13 is wrapped around the end 'oflthe strip which end/is bent over on itself to 'firmly clamp the resistance wire and also bent down against the tube. The insulating coating 14 is applied' to and embeds the joint between .the wire and conducting strip. The strip 1s shown twisted 90 degrees in the hole 11 and passes out of its lower end, extends a short distance outwardly in a radial direction through a slot 17 formed in the insulating body and extends downwardly through the outer portion of the slot 17 as shown in Fig. 1. The lower end of the strip forms one terminal of the unit.
The lower end of the tube 10 has an offset to its upper end by a few, turns of the wire being wrapped around it and clamped by the end of the stripv being bent over on itself. The end of the strip is also bent down fiatwise against the top surface of the offset of the tube 10. It is also covered with and embedded in the insulating coating 14. The lower end of the strip 19 forms the other terminal of the resistance unit. The lower end of the insulating tube has formed in it a circular depression 20 and between the two offsets of the tube is a rectangular opening 21 so that the tube is adapted to be placed on and bridge a supporting bar 22 which may be of metal, and upon which a series of tubes may be mounted in a row. The unit is held in place by a screw 23 passing through the hole 12, the head of the screw engaging the upper end of the tube and seated in a cutaway portion.
In order to further protect the strip 15 in the lower end of the tube and to keep it in place in its slot, cement or plaster of Paris 24C may be forced into'the slot 17 and depression 20; also when the supporting rod 22 is of a standard size, a gage the size of the support 22 or a little larger may be forced in between the offsets of the tube after the cement has been applied and before it has set so that the cement is formed around the gage to accurately fit it. Although l have shown preferred embodiments of my invention various niodilications may be made without departing from the sco thereof.

A resistance unit comprising a tube ol insulating material, a resistance on the outer surface ot said tube, the tube havingl two openings therethrough independent ot each other adapted to have elements inserted therein, a conducting lead connected to the resistance at one end and passed through one ot said openings, and means ttor supporting the unit passed through the other ot said openings. i

A resistance unit comprising an insu-4 lating body having three longitudinal openings therethrough and adapter to have elements inserted therein, a. resistance on the outside of said insulating body, two conducting leads connected to said resistance and passed through two ot said openings respectively, and supportiiig means for the unit passed through the third opening.
,4. resista'noe unit comprising an insulating body having a longitudinal opening and having offset portions at one end and having opeiigs in said portions, said openings 'be ing adapted to have elements inserted therein, a resistance on the outside of said insulating body, a conducting lead connected to said resistance and passed through said longitudinal opening and through an opening in one of said offset portions, and a conducting lead also connected to the said resistance and passed through an opening in another ot said offset portions.
5. A resistance unit comprising an insulating body having an openingl at one end for reeeivi and bridging a support and lrving' a longitudinal opening adapted to have an element inserted therein, a resistance on said insulating body, tern'iinals connected thereto, and means passed through said longitu-t'linal opening tor securingl the unit to the support.
6. A resistance unit comprising an insulating body having a pair ol openings at one end ot said body, a resistance on the outside ot said bot y, and a pair olfv leads connectedv to said resistance and extending through said openings respeetively at the end oi" said body.
'i'. 2r resistance unit comprising an insulating body having two slots at one end ot said body, a resistance on the outside of said body, and two leads in the form of strips connected to said resistance and housed in and extending through said slots respectively.

A resistance unit comprising an insulating body having a longitudinal opening therethrough and slotted openings at one end, a resistance on the outside of said body, and two leads in the form ot strips connected to said resistance and. housed in and exte`=i iliiig through said slots respectively, one or said leads also extending through said longitudinal opening.

A resistance unit comprising an insulating body having two longitudinal openings and having slotted openings at one end adapted to have elements inserted therein, a resistance on the outside of said body, two leads in the form of strips connected to said resistance and housed in and passed through said slots respectively, one ot said leads also passed through one ol'l said longitudinal openings, and supporting means for the unit passed through the other of said longitudinal openings.

A resistance unit comprising an insulating tube having two longitudinal openings and two offset portions at one end and having slots in said offset portions respectively, two leads in the 'form of strips connected to said resistance and housed in and extending through said slots respectively, one of said leads also extending through 'one of said longitudinal openings and supporting means for the unit extending through the other of vsaid longitudinal openings.
