A TTORIVE Y8 PATENT OFFICE.

MINEBS LAMP.
eeann.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1921.
Application filed May 12, 1819. Serial No. 296,522.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Eowano M. ERIOKSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oi Ray, in the county of Pmal and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Lamps, of which the following is a specification,
My i vention is an improvement in miners lamps, and has for its object to provide a simple, strong and etlicient lamp wherem all the parts are made detachable tor quick and easy cleaning. I
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the improved lamp;
Fig. 2 is a side view;
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the hook and its connections;-
Fig. 4 is a partial top plan view of the bail.
In the present embodiment of the invention the improved lamp consists of a body composed of a lower section 1 and an upper section 2, the said sections having threaded. engagement as shown. Thus a closed container is provided, the top 3 of the upper section being, however, removable as shown, and this top has filling nipple normally closed by a screw threaded plug a.
A partition 5 is. arranged transversely of the upper section, and this partition has a central opening into which is threaded a feeding tube 6, the said tube being adapted to feed the water from the water compartment above the partition into the carbid compartment below the partition. The upper end of this iced tube is normally closer by a valve 13, the stem of the valve extending upwardly through the top 3 ot the upper section and having a handle tor turning the same, as shown, to permit the valve to be opened and closed from outside the casing. y
n pipe 7 leads from the partition o, upwardly and outwardly through a stufling box in the wall of the section 2, and then upwardly into a reflector casing 9. A burner protector 8 is connected with the pipe in the reflector casing, and this casing has the usual light transmittmg member 9 the said member being convex in the present instance. The stufling boX above mentioned is formed by a flange 11 on the pipe 7 which engages the outer face of the casing, and a lock nut 12 which is threaded on to the pipe and engages the inner face of the casing. Thus a. gas-tight joint is provided at this place. rlurangec. for clamping engagement between the upper and lower sections is a ring-like supporting shelf 10 upon which is disposed a screen 10 having a central depressed portion llP disposed within and extending through the central opening in the shelf and this screen has its outer edge formed with a vertical flange 10 at the top of which is formed an outwardly extending horizontal flange 1O disposed against the u derside of the partition 5. The cup or depressec. portion 10 encircles and extends below the feed tube 6.
The lamp is arranged to be supported, whendesired, by means of a Spike 15 which extends radially from a ring 16 embracing the upper section 01 the casing just above its connection with the lower section, and this ring c rries also a socket 11 for a candle.
A bail 14 is connected with the cover 3 by meansof rivets 1? as shown, and a hook is connected with the bail by means of links 19 and 20. These links 19 and 20 are pivoted at their outer ends to the ends of the body of the bail, and the links are connected by a set screw 21 which engages a extendim longitudinally of the link nd an opening in the link 20. The head the set screw is rigid with the hook 18, Ad the nut thereof will clamp the two inks together on the head. The slot proides a lost motion connection between the link 19 and the hook 18.
Referring to Fig. l, it will be noticed that the upper surface of the body 01" the bail is grooved, and because oi the lost motion connection the links 19 and 20 may be folded down into the groove. The hook may also be folded into this groove, the said hook being bent to correspond with the curve of the bail. The reflectorcasing 9 is connected to the upper section 2 of the casing by means of a bolt 22 and a nut 2%, the re flec'tor having a bracket plate 23 secured thereto and lapping upon the casing, and the bolt 22 extends through the bracket plate. It will be noted that all the parts are detachable. The upper section 2 may be removed from the lower section 1, and the feed tube 6 may be detached from the partition 5. The cover 3 may be detached from the upper section, and the reflector casing may be also detached from the upper section. The burner 8 is separable from the pipe 7, and this pipe is separable from both partition 5 and easing 2.
I claim:
' In a miners lamp, upper and lower casing' sections detachably connected, apartition extending transversely of the upper section and defining a water compartment therein, a feed tube extending below said partition and communicating with said compartment, means for controlling passage of Water through said tube, a ring-like member constitutlng a shelf clampingly engaged between said sections and spaced below said partition, a screen seating upon said shelf and having its outer edge formed with a vertical flange terminating in an outwardly extending flange engaging the underside of the partition, said screen being formed centrally with a depressed portion constituting a cup extending through the opening in the shell and surrounding and extending below the feed tube, said lower casing serv- 7 ing to contain calcium carbi-cl onto which water from the feed tube drops, and a gas outlet p pe leading into the lower sectlon.
