To atl LU/7mm it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ArromsoN BROWN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Luzern, Buchanan Drive, Rutherglen, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Folded Blank Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to folding, collapsible or knockdown boxes, more particularly those of cardboard as used for carrying and protecting incandescent gas mantles.
Such boxes are usually constructed from a blank of cardboard divided into panels by creasing lines and cuts, the various panels being so bent and moved relatively to one another, that a square or rectangular box is produced having therewithin a curved shelf (hereinafter referred to as a fixed shelf) under which may be accommodated two of the three projecting feet or ears of a mantle ring while the third is secured by a curved movable slide which is pushed in by hand after the mantle has been placed in position. In this way, the mantle is securely held and protected from damage during transit.
It is -found in practice that the movable slide, being loose, is apt to become mislaid and lost or damaged, and one object of the present invention is to so arrange the blank that the slide formsan integral or definitely connected part of it.
Another object is a blank which shall not involve any unnecessary waste of material when a number of them are being cut out, stamped or otherwise formed.
Another object is an improved construction in which the mantle is inserted at one .side of the box.
The invention principally consists in so forming the box blank that the action of completing the folding of the box automatically actuates the movable shelf or shelves to insure the proper holding down of the mantle ring within the box.

In carrying the invention into effect and referring to Figs. l and 2, the blank is longitudinally divided as by a cut line a and a crease line into two halves c and d respectively. `Each half is subdivided by crease lines c into five panels c to c5 and (Z1 to Z5 respectively. The half d constitutes the top panel (Z4, the bottom panel d? and two of the sides d1 and d3, while the half c provides the four remaining sides c1 to 0.4. Each of the narrow end portions d and c5 forms a securing flap. At one side of the part CZ there is attached for a part of its length by a crease line f, a strip g, hereinafter called a shelf strip, which is transversely divided by creasing and cutting into g1, g2 and g3. The center panel g2 is cut away as shown so that it may afterward form a fixed shelf t to accommodate a lug or lugs on the mantle ring. The corners of the panel g2 are cut as shown at la to space the vshelf a convenient distance to allow the lugs to pass underneath.
At the side of the part c there is attached by a crease line Z an extension piece m which will afterward form the movable shelf to cooperate as will be described with the fixed shelf member 7L to hold down the mantle ring, and such extension piece is fitted with wings or lever portions n by which it may be actuated.
In setting up the box the fixed shelf strip g is turned up on edge and the two free panels g2 and g3 thereof bent around to form With the remaining panel g1, three sides of a square upstanding on the half (Z and iitting around the panel d1. The other part c is now turned up on edge and is swung around so that its panels 02, c3 and c* lit around the upstanding shelf strip g forming a square box with one side open the bottom of which is formed by the panel (Z1. The box is now upended on to the bottom panel cl2 (forming with c2 a double bottom) into position somewhat as illustrated in Fig. 2 with the extension piece m forming the movable shelf extending fiat from the bottom of the open side. The mantle with its ring is now placed 4in the box with one or two of its lugs beneath the fixed shelf 7L, and the extension m forming the movable shelf is then turned up 'on edge which action will cause the two side wings n to bend inward toward each other and leaving their sharp corners projecting so that when the panel Z3 is swung up to close the open side, it engages with the wings a and presses them in at the same time turning down the movable shelf upon the remailling lug or lugs of the mantle ring. The folding of the box is finished byfolding down the top panel d4 upon the panel 0*, and the box finally completed by tuo-king the flap d5 in behind the panel (Z1. Y
'In a second modication as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the blank is so formed that the usual fixed shelf is replaced by a movable autolnatically actuated shelf similar to that above described, so that both shelves are thus automatically adjusted.
ln such a construction the blank comprises a longitudinal centerpart 0 transversely divided by crease lines into five panels 01 to 05.

In setting up the box, the sides 02 and 04 are turned up relatively to the bottom panel 03, and the top 01 is bent over to form a Vfour sided square. rlhe shelf g is then turned up on edge and is finally adjusted into position by closing in the side panel p, the flap p1 being finally tucked in.v The panel 81 which now extends from the top is turned down into the open side and then upward as shown in Fig; l against the top panel o1 to reinforce it from inside and in doing so, secures the Hap ,05 on the side panel 04, after which the shelf t is inserted and finally adjusted in position by the closing in of the side panel s and secured by tucking in the flap s2. Vthe purpose of affording a stop adapted to lit against the side face of one of the mantle ring lugs, the shelf t is provided with an ear piece 252 attached by a crease line as shown in Fig. 3. The side t3 forms an abrupt shoulder which engages witho-ne side of one of the lugs on the mantle ring.

The modified blank in Fig. 7 comprises a main part 4 divided by crease lines so as to form a top panel 4, side panels 4b and 4d, bottom panel 4c and a flap 45. The panels 4b and 4d are -attached by crease lines, the remaining side panels forming respectively the back 5 having a flap 5a, and the front 6 having a fiap 6a. The shelf extensions 7 and 8 each having an actuating wing 7a and 8a are attached to the bottom panel 4.c and in order that the shelf 8 may have the necessary space beneath it, the corner 8b thereof is extended beyond the creased line 8C. When setting up the box, the side panels 4b and 4d are turned up on either side of the bottom panel 4c and the panel 4a is bent over to form the top and is attached to the flap 4e by adhesive, wire stitching or otherwise. The shelf 8 is turned in and the back is closed in by the panel 5 and secured by the flap 5a. The other shelf 7 is actuated and the front closed in by panel 6 and finished by tucking in the flap 6a.
From the various arrangements above described it will be seen that the form and arrangement of the blanks may vary considerably and that the co-acting shelf members may form part of one or more panels.
Such panels while preferably being integral with the other panels of the blank may nevertheless be formed as a separate unit member carrying one or both shelves and afterward attached to a desired main panel by any suitable means, such as adhesive, riveting, wire stitching or the like. Une example of such a construction is shown in Fig. 8, in which both shelf members 9 with double wings 10 are attached by double crease lines 11 to a panel 12 which is subsequently secured to any suitable main panel of a blank, and thus serve as a reinforcement to the bottom of the box. It will be obvious also that the unit illustrated in this figure may be applied to either a knockdown box or a collapsible box and a perspective view of the latter box is illustrated in Fig. 9 in which the unitary shelf member in Fig. 8 is mounted as shown, the box being closed by back and front side panels 13.
1n the various other modifications, the
panel to which one or both movable shelfV members are secured, may vary in its position in relation to the other panels, and thus may alter the general form of the blank, but this will not affect the basic idea of the present invention which consists in the automatic actuation of one or both shelves. The width of the shelf members is also an iniportant consideration and in most of the modifications it is approximately half the width of the main panels. A saving of material is effected and the two shelf members when turned come edge to edge, but in the and the bottom by modifications shown in Figs. 3 and 7, the shelves are such that they overlap. It is to be noted that each shelf may have one or two actuating wings, and if the former construction is adopted the wing on one may be on the same side as the wing on the other or they may be'on relatively opposite sides.
One important consideration in deciding the form of blank is to economize material and the arrangements illustrated are such that most of them permit, especially by the half width of the shelves, a reversing of the adjacent blanks' when first cutting them out, so that they fit into one another to effect maximum saving of material.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 5 it is to be noted that the shelf strip in fitting against the bottom and two sides provides a stiffening corner member that is not fastened as by wire stitching, for instance if fastening 1s desirable the tongue 'w1 Fig. 5 may be employed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A folding collapsible box having a shelf with an edge shaped to engage an article and provided with a wing having an edge extending into a position to be engaged by one of the panels of the box, said wing exerting pressure on the shelf toward one of the box panels when its edge is engaged by one of the'panels, said shelf cooperating with the second mentioned panel for gripping an article between them.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a box blank including a panel, one side of which carries a shelf extension designed to be automatically folded over on to the panel for the purpose described, a second panel integral with the blank, and a nected to the shelf extension and having an edge engaged by a second panel for forcing the shelf extension toward the first panel.

A new article of manufacture coniprising in combination a box blank, divided into panels for forming the top, bottom and sides of a knocknown or collapsible box, the bottom panel being provided with a shelf extension, and means on said extension for automatically turning the same over upon the bottom panel by positioning one of the sides when setting up the box.
4. A new article of manufacture comprising a box blank, a shelf strip attached thereto at one side for a part of its length, shelf extension on the other side of the blank and means on the said extension to automatically bring it into co-acting position with the said shelf strip when setting up the box.
5. A knockdown box as claimed in claim 4, which is reinforced at two of the corners a shelf strip.
6. A'. knockdown box as claimed in claim wing conel, in which the Shelf strip -is'provided With a tongue at one end thereof which engages on opening in one of the .sido panels of the blank vto assist in Securing the parts together.
7. A, knookdown collapsible or folding box of tbe 1ind deiined by claim 4:, in which the shelf extension carries a stop which is adapted to be posiioned against the Side of one of the mantle ring lugs.
8. A collapsible knookdoxvn or folding` box including a blank provided with a number of panels, a shell` panel having an integral shelf Strip which is folded and spaced from one of the panels to provide for engagging a mantle ring, a shelf extension integral with one of said panels and folded into alinement with said strip to provide a looking .Ineens for securing the ring, and means connected t0 @he Shelf extension and engageablo with ons. of the looXy Panels for forcing the shelf extension toward the shelf panel.
