Description
PATENT OFFICE..
ALEXEY LALIEFF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
AUDIPHONE.
Specification of Letters Patent. t t Ja 1921.
Application filed May 5, 1920. Serial No. 378,958.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXEY LALIEFF, a citizen of Georgia residing at Nev York, county of New York, and State f New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Audiphones, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device having for its object to collect sound and to direct it through the ear drum to the auditory nerve.
It is the object of the invention to provide an audiphone which is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture and which can be readily and conveniently adjusted to the ears when it is desired to use the same.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device, partly in section, and constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of one of the sound collecting drums.
Fig. 3 is an inner side view of one of the sound collecting drums.
Fig. 4 is a section through the sound collecting drum Fig. 3, the section being taken on line 4-4'.
Fig. 5 shows the application of one of the sound collectin drums to the head of a person using the evice.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of a modified form of the connecting tube for the sound collecting drums.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a pair of sound collecting drums 10 and 11, each having a ridge or crown 12 at its rear face ending in a nipple 18 adapted to be connected with one end of a tube 14 which may be made of rubber or any other suitable material adapted to be drawn over the end of the nipple. At its inner end the tube 14 has an inner depending flange 15 and is adapted to receive the free end of a second provided with ear-shaped openings tube 16 of somewhat smaller diameter as the tube 14 which is also provided at its inner end with an outer flange 17 adapted to engage the flange 15 of the tube 14 for preventing a separation of both tubes. The outer end of the tube 16 is drawn over the nipple 13' of the second sound collecting drum 11.
The drums 10 and 11 are provided at their inner faces with ear shaped openings 18 adapted to fit snugly over the ears of a user so as to leave a space for the collection of the sound through the opening 18. The rear wall of each drum is provided with an opening 19 in communication with the hollow inner space of the ridge or crown 12.
As shown in Fig. 6 the connection tube 14 mziy have accordion shape as indicated at 20.
*rom the foregoing description it will be clear that the two sound collecting drums may be adjusted over the ears of a person desiring to listen to a sound, or to music, and the connecting tubes may be adjusted according to the size or formation of the head by either telescoping the tubes 14 and 16 or simply by connecting the drums by means of the accordion-like tube 20 auto- -matically adjusting itself to the formation and size of the head of the user. The instrument can be cheaply made of celluloid or any other suitable material.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letlters Patent of the United States is as fol- OVVS I 1. A device, of the character described comprlsing a pair of sound collecting drums for snugly fitting-the drums over the ears of a user and leaving a space for the collection of sound, a tubular ridge at the rear of each drum ending in a nipple, and an adjustable means adapted to be connected to the nipple of each drum for connecting both sound collectin drums.
2. device of the character described comprising a pair of sound collecting drums in the form of ear-laps adapted to snugly fit over the ears of a wearer, tubular ridges at the outer rear face of each drum in communication with the interior of said drums,
nipples at the outer end of each of said 10 In testimony whereof I have aflixed my 15 signature.
ALEXEY LALIEFF.
