As I am describing'my invention as applied to the trolley retriever I will set forth the objects and purposes of such a device be fore going intoJa' detailed description of the particular construction set forth in this specification and drawings attached.
The trolley retrieveras applied to electric cars has for its purposefirst, to keep the trolley ropetaut during normal operation of. the car but to permit of free movement of the rolley pole up and down as it accommodates itselfto the rise and fall in the trolleywire; second, in case of the trolley pole: jumping the trolley wire as is frefquently the case at overhead frogs, crossings and curves, the trolley retriever must quickly and'positively draw the trolley pole down below the level of the trolley wire to prevent the trolley pole striking the overheadwork-and tearing it down.
" In performing these two functions the device in itself'must have certain characteristics, namely; automatic means for locking the rope drum or reel to the retrieving .mechanism when the trolley pole makes an abnormal rapid upward movement; an automaticunlockmg of the retrieving mecha-' nism as quickly as possible when the upward movement of the trolley pole takes place; means whereby the retrieving mechanism 'can be adjusted to give and maintain any desired predetermined number of turns of the rope reel within the limits of the construction; means preventing the throwing of the retrieving meghanism ina locked or operative position before the predetermined number of turns 'hasibee'n made; means for positively indicating when the predeterminednumberof turns'in. resetting the re- ;trieving mechanism has been reached and limiting further rotation; means preventing the reengagement of the retriever locking mechanism untilthe predetermined number of turns of the reel has been made in a rope winding direction; means for automatically locking theretrieving device in a position for ag'ainretrieving after the reel and retrieving mechanism hasbe'en rotated'ln'a rope-unwinding direction for a predetermined number of turns. All of these characteristics are found in the device herein disclosed and my method of bringing about these characteristics will be brought out clearly in the following description.
First I have a case composed of two parts, namely the back indicated by numeral 1 and the removable front indicated by numeral 2. The rear of the back portion 1 is recessed with a cavity 3 in which is positioned a. power spring 1. The outer end of this spring is attached to the case 1 by means of rivets, screws or other suitable means. The inner end of the spring is secured to a collar 5 which is provided with a plurality of; slots or grooves (3 upon its interior surface for the reception of a projecting key or lug '7 upon the hub S as indicated. This lug or key engages with the slot (3 and allows the withdrawal of the member 9 without disturbing the spring and as the collar 5 has a plurality of slots 6 around the interior surface of the collar the construction permits of positioning the member 9 with respect to the spring i as may be desired and which is more fully explained hereinafter.
The hub 8 projects from the member 9 and this member 9 which is rotatably mounted upon a fixed shaft or spindle 10 is termed a retrieving disk or member.
Closing the chamber 3 is a diaphragm member 11 secured to the case 1 by means of the screws 12 or by equally satistactory means. Projecting from the diaphragm '11 at one point is a stud 13 and rotatably mounted upon the stud 13 is a double gear 14, one part being indicated by 14A and the other part byldB. liotatably secured to the case 1 is an internally toothed ring-gear 15 which is held in position by suitable plates and screws 16 or by other suitable means. The pinion MA meshes with the ring-gear 15 at the point X. Secured to the hub 8 oi? the retrieving disk 9 is another toothed member 17 and this toothed member rotates with the disk 9 and meshes with the gear 143 atthe point 1.
The retrieving disk 9 is provided also with a boss 18 which might be considered a continuation of the boss 8, and upon the boss 18 is rotatably mounted a reel 19 to rivets, screws, etc., to a rotatable collar 22.

Secured to the reel 19 are one or more can trifugally operated dogs 26 andunder normal operation these dogs are held in a retracted positionas indicated in Fig. 2 by means of the spring 27, one end of which is attached to the dog andthe otherend to a pin 28 onthe reel 19. The dog 26 is pro vided with a cylindrical end 29 adapted to be seated in a circular cavity of the lug 30 which is an integral part of and projects from the face of the reel 19. Under normal operating conditions the dogs are retracted and the end faces of the 'dogs' rest against the faces 31 of the support lugs 30. Should. the trolley pole leave the wire at any time the rapid upward movement of the same will causethe reel 19 to revolve at such a rate as to cause the dogs 26 to fly outward from centril'ugal force as set up in opposition to the tension of the spring 27 and when in a thrown-out position one of the centrifugal dogs will ass under and trip the locking cl then assume the position shown in Fig. 3 in which its'end is in engagement with the shoulder 34 on the disk 9 and thereby locking the drum or reel 19 to the rement with the retrieving mechanism by the spring 37' and is adapted to alternately en the stop 38 on the disk 9 and! the stop 39' on the ring-gear 15 as more fully hereinafter described. The rib 40 engages the rib 32 on a dog 26 and insures the dog strongly contacting with the latch 35 in the operation of releasing the latch from the disk 9 and makes thisoperation positive. Immediately upon the engagement of:
dog with the latch the retrieving mechanism is released and the power springt tends to revolve the disk 9 in the direction oithe an row R and the rotation of the drum or reel 19 continues in the rope-unwinding direction until the dog 26 engages the lug 34. asindicated in Fig. 3. This engagement of the dog with the lug 34 on the retrieving disktakes place almost immediately upon the disengagement ofthe latch 35 withthe stop 38 of the retrieving .disk. .1
The 1atch35 is wide enough so as to en gage the face of the stop 39 in the ring-gear 15 and the face 38 of the stop in the re trievingdisk 9. The diameter of the ringa gear is made somewhat greater than the di ameter of the retrieving disk 9 and this largerdiameter assures the latch being. held out of engagement at all times with the disk 9 excepting at such time as the stops in the disk and ringgear coincide under proper condition. i i
The gearing 14A, 14:13 and 17 is for the purposeof rotating the ring-gear 15 at a. certain rate relatively to the rotation of the retrieving disk 9 and the gearing is so an ranged that the ring-gear 15 rotates in the opposite direction to the rotation oi the re trieving disk 9. We will assume for con venience of description that in the device herein shown the arrangement of the gearing is such as to permit the retrieving disk 9 to make six revolutions in one direction while the ring-gean15 makes one revolution in the opposite direction. Since the members 15 and 9 are linked together by means of the gears 14; and 17, the relation between the members 9 and 15 is maintained; that is there is no slippage or one part relatively to the other and after the retrieving disk 9 has made six complete revolutions the relation betweenthedisk 9 and the ring-gear 15 will be the same as at the instant when the disk 9 began to make its first revolution.
It will be readily understood that for one revolution of the retrieving disk the. ring gearwill make one-sixth of a revolution and for each additional revolution of the re trieving disk thering-gear will be further advanced one-sixth of a revolutionuntil at the end of six revolutions of the retrieving disk the ring-gear will have made one complete revolution. It is therefore very easy to adjust the retrieving mechanism so that the reel to which the rope is attached when interlockedwith the disk can be caused to wind up the rope one or more revolutions within the limits of the device and this isv accomplished by proper setting of the stop 3901 the ring-gear 15 with the stop 380i the disk 9 with respect to apoint where the twonotches coincide and which I will term the 3 zero point and opposite the en a in point of the latch35. b a b In order to make it possible to conven iently change the relation of the members 9 and 15 so as to adjust the number of revolutlons of the drum and retrieving disk to meet a predetermined number of turns, I

and then place the disk in position as shown in, Fig. 1 and place the face of the stop 38 stance in Fig. 3 the member 15 is shown as having the; face of the stop 39 set opposite 1 the'indicator mark 2 and the face of the spring 4 the drum andthe retrieving disk 9 V will be given'two full turns before the latch engages with and locks. the members in position for further retrieving action.
The plurality of'slots. 6 in the collar 5 .permits'of placing; the retrieving disk 9 in different relations to the ring-gear 15 as desired without bringing any tension upon the spring 4.- If there were only one slot 6 in the collar 5 then insetting the disk 9 in all but one relation to the-ring-gear 15 the spring would be under tension and it would not be possible to properly adjust the device.
It-.will of. course be understood that the 3 ratio of gearing can be so proportioned that any number of turns of the disk 9 can be had, within reason for. one revolution of the ring-gear 15.

It is usualiin setting my device to set the face of the stop 38 off somewhatfrom the zero point :andthis will then permit of a slight difference .betweenthe stop faces 38 and 39 when the disk is in a locked position 9 and 15 asshown in Fig. .3, namely the member 15'.set;at 2 andthe member 9 set at 0 which 'gives'the member 9 two turns. In Fig. 5 I have shown the setting of the membar 15 to give 'five turns of the member positioned as shown in as shown in Figs; 2 and 7 ior'as shown in Fig. Get-the mstant'that the locking pawl has engagedthe ring-gear 15' inresetting the v} retrievingmechanism. This distance can be madeanythlng desired byfplaclng the face of the stop off from the 0 mark by'the amount of difference desired.
' I I will now explain the functioning of the various parts of my device by outlining in sequence the operat on of the device when brought into action as by a trolley pole sud denly leaving the trolley wire.
The'rapidrisingof the :trolley pole will cause the rope to'unwind from the drum 19 at an abnormalrate' and thiswill set up in the dogs 26 a centrifugal force inexcess of For inthat which the springs 27 are adjusted to overcome. The dogs 26 will fly outward and into engagement with the inner surface of the retrieving disk flange and the one which at the instant is nearest the rib 40 will be forced into engagement with the locking lug 35 and the engagement of the rib 32 with the rib 40 will positively insure the locking dog 35 being raised or thrown out of engagement with the stop 38 in the retrieving disk 9. The retrieving disk 9 will immediately start to rotate in the direction R indicated by the arrow under the action of the retrieving spring 4 and the reel or drum will continue to rotate in a rope-unwinding direction until the dog 26 and the shoulder 34 on the retrieving disk 9 engage and at that instant of engagement the rotation of the drum in a rope-unwinding direction will be arrested and reversed and the rope will then be wound upon the drum as the drum will be locked to the retrieving disk and held in a locked engagement by the rib 33 on the retrieving disk 9; the rib 33 also prevents disengagement of the members due to any rebound at the instant of a strong engagement of the dog and disk. The drum and disk will continue to rotate in a rope-windin direction until the two have completed the number of turns of a predetermined amount.
After the drum and reel have made the necessary number of turns in a rope-winding or retrieving direction indicated by the arrow R, these members will come to a rest but the dog 26 will stillbe held in engagement with the disk 9 as the upper pressure of the trolley pole through the rope will be constantly urging the dog 26 into engagement with the shoulder 34 and the rib will maintain the dog 26 in engagement regardless of the position anywhere within a circle which the two may assume when at rest.
During the rotation of the drum and disk in a rope-winding or retrieving direction as indicated by R on the drum, the ring-gear 15 has rotated in the opposite direction as indicated by the arrow R- on the ring-gear.
At the instant that the latch 35 is thrown out of engagement with the stop 38 on the disk 9 the disk begins rotation in the retrieving directionR as indicated upon the disk and before the disk has made one revolution the latch 35 will be riding upon the outer face 41 of the ring-gear 15 as shown in Fig. 3 and thereby permitting the retrieving disk 9 to complete its predetermined number of revolutions without danger of re'e'ngagement of the1 latch 35 with the locking face 38 011 the dis 1 9.
To reset my retrieving mechanism it is only necessary to pull the rope out of the device, causing the drum to rotate and with it the disk 9 to which it is interlocked as explained. The rotation of the disk 9 will be in the setting direction; indicated by. the
same number of turns has been made by the disk in unwinding the rope from the. reel as was made by the disk in winding the rope on the reel, the stop 39 on the ringegear 15 will be brought back to its original position, plus a difference asexplained beforeandwhlch represents the difference betweenthe faces As the stop 39 approaches its original position the engaging point of the latch35 will begin to depress action oi. the spring 37 as soon as the engaging; point: reaches one end ot-the slot the disk. 15 and indicated by numeral its the disk 15 continueslto rotate in the direction S as indicated thereon the latch 35 will drop lower into the slot in the member 15yaud untilthe stop 39 engages with the end ofthe latch 35 when rotation will be stopped. At this particular instant the members 9 and 15 will hear the relative positions indicatedin Fig.
To complete the setting of the retrieving mechanism it is only necessary to slack up on the rope slightly, allowing the power in spring which has been winding up during the setting operation to cause the disk 9 to rotate in the direction B indicated thereon, but this rotation is only equal to that of the diil'erence between the faces otthestops 38 and 39 as shownin 2, and 7,"at the end of which rotation the stopZlS in Fig. 6 will have engaged the end 03!. the latch 35 as shown in Fig. 7 and in which position the retrievinp; members will be locked against rotation in either direi-tion, except to the extent of the distance between the stops 38 and 39. (See Figs. 2 and 7).

(Fig. 7 shows dog; on point of releasing). Iflthe tension againstwhich the retrieving inecha nism operates is considerable at the end of the retrieving operatiomthen this must be taken into consideration in adjusting the mechanism and this is the case when applied to trolley retriever.
As the tension in the trolley rope causing itto rise is of a considerable amount, it
is necessary to properly balance the power spring in "my device againsflthat of the tensionin the trolley gpole spring when the trolley pole has been drawn down a proper amountandtthis can be accomplished after one or twol trials by setting the retrieving IIIQCl'ltUllSIIl for a number of revolutlonsin excess of thatyrequired to drawthe pole the proper.distanceybelowthe level of the trolley wire. It'will be readily understood that if one 'startswith no tension on the power spring 4 and thedevice is set for four revolutions of theretrieving member. 9 that when the device is properly connected to a trolley pole which has a spring action in opposition to that o flthe power spring 4, that the re trieving devicewill draw the trolleywpole down until'the tension in the springs of the two devices opposing each other is at a balance. This might be found to be equal to two turns of the retrieving 'disk ;fthat is the power spring mustbe wound up two turns in order to balance the tension of the spring trolley pole and if it requires four turns of the reelto bring thetrolley down suificient distance then the mechanism would be set to retrieve two plus four turns or six turns of the retrieving disk. i
If'this example should be found to be the case in actual practice then itwould be only necessary to set all the devices for six turns with notensionon the power spring and then in. actualoperation the trolley pole will bebrought down in each case adistance equal to four turns of the retrieving disk. If retrieving mechanism is applied to a device which has very little force opposing thepower spring t then the precautions just mentioned in setting the device in order to adjust for an opposing spring tension as1in 1 a trolley pole are not necessary.
It is also possible to set the device for any fraction of awhole revolution by following out the same principle in itssetting as given .Itistheretore believed that the present invention provides a simple and practical device adaptedto accomplish, among. others, all theadvantages and objects above set forth. w l
Without further analysis, the foregoing within the meaning and range of equivalency oithefollowing claims.

7. A reeling device comprising in combination a casing, a retrieving mechanism therein, a. power spring secured to and ada ated to rotate the mechanism in one direction when wound, the retrieving mechanism comprising two members rotatable about the same axis relatively to each other and to the casin a lock member to D7 engage each of the rotatable retrieving members, holding means on each rotatable member toengage the lock member at a predetermined spring tension, and inter-connecting mechanism between the rotatable members whereby the angular relation between the holding means on the rotatable members can be changed to obtain a predetermined spring tension in rotating the retrieving mechanism in a spring winding direction.

A reeling device comprising in combination acasing, a retrieving mechanism, a spring secured to and adapted to rotate the retrieving mechanism in one direction, the retrieving mechanism comprising two rotatable members rotating about a common axis and a direction changing mechanism inter-connecting the rotatable members to cause the members to rotate in opposite directions, a lock member adapted to engage the retrieving mechanism to prevent the r0- tation of the retrieving mechanism in either direction after a predetermined number of revolutions of the retrieving mechanism in a spring winding direction.

A reeling device comprising in combination a casing, a retrieving mechanism therein, a spring secured to and adapted to rotate the retrieving mechanism in one direction, the retrieving mechanism comprising two rotatable members rotating about a common axis, a locking member, stop means on each of the rotating members to engage the locking members to prevent rotation of the retrieving mechanism after a predetermined number of turns in a spring winding direction, to prevent engagement of the locking and stop means until the required number of turns has been reached and to hold the retrieving mechanism against rotation in a spring unwinding direction until released and mechanism inter-connecting the retrieving members whereby the angular distance between the stop means on the rea retrieving mechanism' trieving members can be changed to change the number of turns of the retrieving mechanism in a spring winding direction.
