To all whom it may conce'n:

Be it known that- I, JAMEs (JoNYERs Mon- RELL, of the city of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented a new and Improved Oombined Ash-Screener and Commode; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description ther'eof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

My invention is contained in the object represented in Figure No. 1, Fig. No. 2 being a plan of ash-screener With hopper and spout and measurer. It consists of a penthouse or box, a, which, by suitable framework, is joined to the commode-seat b. Within the penthouse or nbox is hung the ashscreener and cinder-sifter cA at an angle from the horizon, having, by preference, its higher edge abutting the side forming the back protection to the seat. This screener, riddle, or sieve receives the unscreened ashes through a hole, 8, in the top of the penthouse a. The screen is provided with sides to direct the cinders as they separate from the ash-dust and descend in time into a suitable receptacle. The screen or sieve c has pieces 01 attached to it, which form a hopper with its lowest edge converging toward one point, 02. At this point a funnel, tube, or spout, f, is formed, inclining toward the excrement-receptacle, g, placed below the seat b. Attached to the under side of this funnel, tube, or spout, and at the lower end thereof, is a notch, h, by preference of Wood, and of an angular shape. This notch works within a measurer or trough, z, open wholly at the end.

The operation of my invention may be stated as folloWs-that is to say: By the depression of the commode-seat b, or, in lieu thereof, the movement of the handle r, motion is given to the screener c andV its attachments, by which the cinders are carried down the inclincd plane forming the screen, and the ash-dust onto the inclincd planes forming the hopper below, and thence into the funnel or receiver and the trough or measurer. Upon the seat b being relieved from this depression the screener and its attachments resume their original position, and in the act of doing so the notch h sends before it the ash-dust collected in the measurer, 'and distributes the same over the recently-fallen deposit in the excrement-receptacle g, or, in lieu thereof, the Vault g', the month of the funnel at the same time closing by abutting against the side of the penthouse, or a cover forming a portion of the case. Across the screener a bar or bars, s, by preference of wood, are fitted to arrest the fall of the unscreened ashes in their course down the incline, and so secure their more effectual sifting from the cinders; or this may be accomplished by one or more corrugations being made in the scrcener itself.

The action, being summarized, is: The unscreened ashes, being thrown through a door or opening, a or ul, fall onto the -inclinc screener, the sifted cinders going down into the receptacle t, from whence they may be removed for re-use through the side wall at fu or'door-opening of, the screened ash-dust being utilized as an excrement deodorizer, in thc manner described.

It is obvious that the shape and relations of the respective parts of my combined ashscreener and commode may be varied to suit the tastes of manufacturers Without departin g from the principle of my invention.

Having thus stated the construction and mode of operation of my invention, what I claim as new therein, and for which I seek Letters Patent, is-
