Application filed June '23, 1919. Serial No. 306,145 r j To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JAMES A. Lorsrnn, a citizen of the United btates, and residing at Cazenovia, Madison county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing machines and more particularly to such machines adapted to print and cut bottle caps from a strip of sheet material fed through. the machine. In my Patent No. 818,699
granted April 24, 1906,- a machine of the type referred to is described. The present invention is an improvement over the patented invention and consists principally 1n the provision of a machine adapted to print in two or more colors; means to adjust the printing means relative to each other and the cutting means to secure accurate reg1ster; a novel construction for carrying the printing means so that. it. may be adjusted longitudinally of the machine without disturbing the mechanism for driving the printing means; a device for storing energy from the printing means during a portion of its movement to give out said energy during another portion of the printing means movement, thereby reducing the power required to operate the machine and eliminating vibration and jerky or uneven running of the machine; and a positively nonoverrunning device for feeding the sheet intermittently through the machine. ., Referringto the drawings the reference numeral indicates the bed of a machine supported by the legs 11. As shown 1n Fig.
3 thisbed mayconsist, of two parallel spaced members of channel section suitably connected at their ends. The operative parts of the machine are all supported by the bed, the principal parts comprising a plurality of printing mechanisms A and a cutting mechanism B.
In the machineillustrated there are two printing mechanisms which are exactly alike except that the ink reservoir of one is located oppositely with respect to the other. Hence the description of one of these mecha msms'will be sufiicient. It is one of the prlncipal objects of this invention to mount the printing devices so that they may be adjusted longitudinally of the bed for the purpose of obtaining accurate register. As shown an inverted U-shaped frame straddles the bed and comprises the leg members 12 joined by the top or connecting member 13 which'carries a platen 14. The frame is mounted for longitudinally sliding move ment on the bed and for this purpose the opposite sides of the bed have the horizontal dovetail guides 15 secured thereto as by means of the screws 16, the legs of the frame being formed with longitudinal dovetail guideways 17 having the guides fitted therein. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the lower central part of the legs of the frame is cut away to provide clearance for parts which extend outside of the legs and to form a pair of prongs 18, the lower ends of which are bent at right angles to provide abutments or stops 19 for a purpose presently to be described. The legs 12 have the vertical spaced strips 20 secured thereto as by means of screws 21 formin uides for the i b t! upwardly extending arms 22, these arms at their upper ends carrying the non-rotative shaft 23, which has the irrevoluble cylinder 2 lmounted thereon. A portion of this cylinder is slabbed off to provide a flat surface 25 for the impression means. At each end of the cylinder is a frame 26, these frames being connected by the rods 27 and carrying inking rollers 28. Between each arm 22 and the adjacent frame 26 is a sprocket 27 connected to the said frame for rotation therewithQ The cylinder is mounted for vertical reciprocating movement to and from the platen 14. The mechanism for accomplishing this comprises a shaft 128 mounted in fixed bearings 29 on the under side of the bed. The-opposite ends of this shaft have the cranks 129 and crank pins .30. and connecting. rods 31 operatively join each crank to the cylinder supporting shaft 23. Thus as the shaft 128 is revolved the printing mechanism will be reciprocated up and down. At the same time theink rolls are caused to revolve around the cylinder b chains 32 passing around the sprockets 2 and sprockets 33 mounted on the crank pins 30, but being held against rotation relative to the said pins. For the purpose of maintaining proper tension in the chains, each connecting rod carries the adjustable idler sprockets 34.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a U-shaped rod has its bottom or base portion 35 carried by the arms 22 and the legs 36 and 37 extending through vertical apertures in the abutments 19. Each of these legs has a spring 38 surrounding the same, one end of which rests against the abutment 19 and the other end of which abuts the portion 35 of the rod. It will be seen that these springs provide means for storing up energy received from the downward movement of the printing mechanism and that the energy is given back during the upward movement, thereby equalizing the power required to run the machine, and eliminating vibration and jerky action. The crank shafts 128 carry the intermeshing spur gears 39, one of. which is driven by. a gear 40 on the driving shaft 50 of the machine, this shaft being carried in bearings on the under side of the bed and having a driving pulley 7 9 at one side of the machine. The gear 40 also drives a gear 41 on a crank shaft 42 which through the connecting rods 43 operates the cutting mechanism B.
The cross pieces-13 of the frames carrying the printing mechanism have the upwardly extending supports 44which carry ink reservoirs 45. The construction and operation of the inking rollers and the means for transferring ink from the reservoir to the cylinder are fully described in my prior patent previously referred to, and as the details thereof constitute no part of the present invention, further description is unnecessary.
As shown in F igs. 3 and 4 each of the cross members 13 of the frames has a lug 46 onthe under side thereof located between the side members of the bed.
A rod 47 extends through one end of the bed and is threaded through one of the lugs 46, a hand wheel 48 being provided on the opposite end thereof so that by turning the same the "printing frame may be adjusted longitudinally of the bed. Asimilar rod 49 is arranged parallel to the rod 47 and is threaded' through the other lug 46 and carries a like hand wheel 48. i
' In theoperation of the machine a sheet or Web of proper material, such as thin card- -board,'is delivered to the .right hand end of atlle machine as viewed in'Fig. 1. This sheet passes through the feed rolls 50 and 51, thence through the printing mechanisms, the cutting mechanism B, between the feed rollers 52 and 53 to the roller 154 on which the remnant is wound up. For the purpose of advancing the sheet intermittently through the machine, the low r rollers 51 and 52 are rotated step by step. This motion i i'lerived from a ratchet mechanism mounted on a shaft 54 extending transversely of the bed, the ratchet mechanism being mounted on one side of the bed and the shaft at the other having a change gear 55 which meshes with a gear 56 carried on an arm 57 pivotally mounted on a shaft 58, which has secured thereto a gear 59 in mesh with the said gear 57. The shaft 58 is arranged below the roller 53 and to the right of roller 52 and extends across the bed having at its opposite end, a bevel gear 60 in mesh with a similar gear 61 on a shaft 62 extending longitudinally of the machine. The opposite end of this shaft has a bevel gear 63 in mesh with a bevel gear 64 on the shaft of roller 51. As the rotation of shaft 58 is communicated to roller 52 it will be seen that the transmission just described connects the two sets of feed rollers so that they will rotate at proper speeds to feed the sheet through the machine. roller 52 the shaft 58 carries a pinion G5 in mesh with a gear 66 at one end of the roller 53 and this latter gear meshes with a gear 67 on the lower roller 52 so that the two rollers are caused to rotate with the same angular velocities.
Referring now to Figs. 2 and 5 the crank pin 68 on one end of the crank shaft 42 has an arm 69 and this arm is connected by means of a link 70 to a pawl 71 pivoted on an arm 72 mounted on the shaft 54. The end of pawl 71 is formed with tooth like projection 73, which is adapted. to engage in the spaces between the teeth of the ratchet gear 74. The teeth of this gear 74 are formed similar to the usual gear teeth and the tooth 73 on the pawl is designed to tightly fit in the spaces so that there is no back lash between the pawl and the ratchet gear. The arm 72 is mounted on the shaft 54 so that it is frictionally held from rotation. against the frictional resistance tending to prevent rotation thereof. When the .link reverses its movement, the pawl 71 will first be turned on its pivot to cause the tooth 73 to engage a space in the ratchet gear 74, then continued movement of the link will carry the arm to the left as viewed in Fig. 2, thereby through the pawl turning the ratchet gear in a clockwise direction. When the link 70 reaches the end of its movement in this latter direction any overrunning of the ratchet gear due to the momentum-of the parts will be positively prevented for the reason that the tooth 73 on the pawl will prevent such overrunning motion. It will be seen therefore this positively non overrunning ratchet device is a very important element of a combination comprising a plurality of printing mechanisms, a cutting mechanism and means for feeding a sheet step by step through said mechanisms, for the reason that the feeding movement of the sheet is always the same with the result that accurate register of the printing mechanisms and the cutting mechanism are obtained.
In the operation of the machine the driv- 'ing shaft 50 is rotated by means of a belt on pulley 79. This drives the feed rolls step by step through the positively nonoverrunning ratchet mechanism so that the sheet 1S intermittently fed through the plurallty of printing mechanisms and the cuttin mechanism. The printing cylinders are also operated from shaft 50 and are given a vertical reciprocating movement. As shown one of the printing devices might print in one color and the other in another and in order to have the successive printings register the hand wheels 48 may be operated to properly adjust the printing mechanisms relative to each other and relative to the cutting mechanism. It will be ob served that this adjustment of the printing mechanisms may be made while the machine is in operation for the reason that it does not in any way interfere with the drivingunderstood that the invention is not limited to the structure illustrated but includes any chan es and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed. as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is 2- 1. A machine of the class described including in combination, a bed, an inverted U-shaped frame straddling said bed, impression means arranged over said frame, arms supporting said impression means guided for vertical reciprocating movement on the legs of the frame, means to reciproca te said impression means including a trans verse crank shaft mounted in bearings in the bed and a connecting rod at each side of the frame joining the shaft and impression means, and means to adjust the frame longitudinally of the bed.
2. A machine of the class described including in combination, a bed, an inverted U-shaped frame straddling said bed, ways on the sides of the bed cooperating with the legs of the frame to support the latter for longitudinal movement, impression means arranged over said frame, arms supporting said impression means guided for vertical reciprocating movement on the legs of the frame, means to reciprocate said impression means including a transverse crank shaft mounted in hearings in the bed and a connecting rod at each side of the frame joining the shaft and impression means, and a threaded rod carried by the bed engaging a nut on the frame whereby the frame may be adjusted longitudinally of the bed.
