To all wlw/m e't may concern Be it known that I, Fnnnnnion W. lecnnno, a subject ot the ling of Sweden, residing at Logansport, in the county ot Cass and State ot lndiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Chucks, ot which the tollowingis a specification.
rlhis invention relates to chucks having,` radially movable Vjaws oi any desired number; and is directed particularly to chucks ci" this character which are operated by air or fluid pressure, such chucks being1 commonly known as pneumatic chucks.
The principal object o'l this invention is to improve and simplify the general construction oit such chucks; another object is to provide a chuck ot this character naving a solid or one-piece head or body portion; another object is to improve the poweitransmitting devices; and other objects will appear Ytrom the following description.

Chucks of this character which have `heretofore been manufactured have usually had the body or supporting portions made of two ormore pieces, which pieces require considerable work to manufacture, and are consequently expensive as well as being` apt to become loosened in operation.
In accordance with my invention, l provide a chuck having a solid body 4l, having guideways 5 for the slides or jaw sup porting members 6, which carry the jaws 7. The aws may be formed integrally with the slide 6, or may be secured thereto, as shown, by means of bolts 8. lt will also be noted that these jaws may be made adjustable in any well known manner (not shown).
The body l comprises a central boss or hub 9, having a face plate or disk l0, which disk is provided at its outer edge with a flange l1 of substantially the same width as the boss 9. The boss and flange are connected at various places by webs l2 tor the guideways 5, which guideways entend through the liange, webs and boss, as will be readily seen from Fig. l. The adjacent webs 12 are also connected at their rear edges by webs or plates 13, thus forming pockets or recesses ll- 'for the jaw actuating devices.
The boss 9 has a central opening l5., which terms a bearing for a tubular draw-bar or jaw .actuating member 16, which moves longitudinally therein. This member is prcvidedwith transverse slots 17, which form guideways for bearing),` blocks or cross-heads` 16, which are secured to the inner ends of bell cranklevers 19 by means of pins 20.
These bell crank levers are pivoted to the webs l2 oit the body by means ot tangentially arranged pin or bolts 2l. The opposite ends of these levers are connected to bearing blocks or cross-heads 22 by means of pins 23. These cross-heads engage with slots or guideways 24 in the several slides or jaws 6. The cylindrical. draw-bar 16 may be actuated in any desired manner, as by means oi a draw-bolt 25, which is connected with the piston of the air cylinder, or to any other suitable actuating mechanism (not shown).
One of the particularly novel Afeatures ot this invention is the arrangement which we have made for protecting the internal parts of the chuck from chips, dirt, or the like. rlhe front end of the bar 16 is tapered or beveled, as indicated at 26, at points opposite the inner ends of the slides 6. The inner ends of these slides are also tapered as indicated at 27, and packing' 28 may be secured to the beveled faces of the bar 16 in order to insure a tight closure.
When the bar or tube 16 is moved forwardly, the blocks i8 will swing the inner ends of the levers to the lett, as shown in Fig. 2, which will cause the blocks 22 to move the slide 6 upwardly; and when the tube or bar i6 is forced rearwardly, the opposite movements will take place. It will be noted that by means of the blocks and pins at the ends of the actuating levers, I provide large bearing surfaces, and these parts may be easily and cheaply made and assembled.
The taper of the several points at the end ci? the bar 16 is such that movement of the slides is not interfered with, but at the same time maintaining a comparatively close con tact between these parts. On account of this arrangement, the 'forward end of the chuck will be substantially closed and no chips or dirt are apt to work through into the pockets holdingr the operating devices.
It Will, however, be noted that there is a comparatively free passageway from the pockets 14 to the rear of the chuck body, so that any particles entering these pockets may readily workout at the rear of the chuck. i
These chucks may be made with any desired number of jaws, and the parts may be modified for different conditions without departing from the scope of this invention, except as specified in the following` claims:
l. A- chuck having a solid single-piece body comprising a central apertured boss with an integrally formed disk at the front end thereof, said disk having a rearwardly extending iange, pockets formed between the boss and flange, levers mounted in said pockets, jaws arranged radially in the front of the body and operatively connected with said levers, and a draw member operatively connected with the inner ends of said levers, the arrangement being such that the longitudinal movement of the draw member will move the jaws radially, substantially as described.
2. A chuck, comprising a body having a central boss with an integrally formed disk at the front end thereof, said disk having a rearwardly extending flange at its periphery, pairs of webs connecting the boss and iiange, radial guideways in the front of the body, slides mounted in said guideways and having transverse slots therein, bell crank levers pivotally mounted between the pairs of webs, bearing blocks pivoted to the forward .ends of the levers and engaging with said slots, a longitudinally movable draw member mounted in said boss and having transverse slots therein, and bearing blocks pivoted to the inner ends of said levers and engaging with said slots.
3. In a chuck, the combination of a body having radial guideways in the face thereof,
slides mounted in said guideways, a longitudinally movable draw member arranged A in the center of the body, said d aw member having beveled faces opposed to correspondingly beveled faces of the adjacent ends of the slides, and means other than the beveled faces of the draw member for actuating the slides from the draw member, the arrangement being such that a substantial closure is maintained between the slides and draw member as the parts are actuated.
a. In a chuck, the combination of a body having a central aperture, a cylindrical longitudinally movable member mounted in said aperture and fitting closely therein,said member having tapered faces at its front end, radially arranged jaws having their inner ends tapered to co-act with said tapered faces, packing inserted between said faces and jaws, and means for actuating the jaws from the longitudinally movable member, said means being other than the tapered faces of the cylindrical member, the arrangement being such that the face of the body is kept substantialljv closed during the movement of the aws.
A body for a chuck, comprising a central apertured boss with an integrally formed face plate having a rearwardly extending flange, webs between the boss and flange, and webs connecting the rear edges of said first-named webs to form pockets for the jaw actuating devices.
6. A jaw actuating device for a chuck, comprising a bell crank having cross-heads pivotally connected to each end thereof.
7. In a chuck, the combination of a jaw having a transverse guideway, an actuating member having a transverse guideway, a bell crank lever, and cross-heads pivoted to the ends of said lever and engaging with said guideways.
