To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I JOHN Rohner WAT- soN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, a resident of the cit of Fort William, Province of Ontario, ominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of m invention, such as will enable those skille in the art to which it a pertains to make and use the same.
is invention relates to improvements in beds particularly desi ed for hospitals, sanitariums and the li e institutions and the objects of the invention are to facilitate adjusting the bed so that a portion of it may be angularly disposed to act as a back rest for a patient, so that he may be able to sit up without inconvenience, to permit of the adjustable portion of the bed being actuated from the side of the bed whereby the angular inclination of the adjustable portion can be altered with a minimum of time and labor.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a bed frame to which is hingedly attached the back-rest B.
This back-rest is of a U-shape and the parallel arms are connected by transversely extending rods 10 and 11, the latter of which is provided with a T or like iece 12 from which the curvilinear arm 13 epends.

On the outer end of one of the bearings 14, a ratchet ring 17 is rigidly mounted and housed in the casing 18, which is secured in position on the rod by means of the set screws 19, and on this casing the lever C is mounted.
This lever consists of a tubular casing 20 provided intermediate of its length with a collar 21, and the upper endof the tubular casin carries a hand grip 22 terminating in a kno 23.
Slidably mounted in the handle' 22 and in the collar 21, is a rod 24, the lower end of which is threaded to the pawl 25, and
between the pawl and the collar B a spiral spring 26 is located and encircles the lower portion of the rod 24.
When it is found desirable to adjust the back rest B, the knob 23 is pulled outwardly thereby moving the rod 24 longitudinally and disengaging the pawl 25 from the ratchet ring 17. The lever C can now be rotated and the motion is transmitted through the casing 18 to the rod 15 which through the rocker arm 16 and arm 13 rotates the back rest about its hinged ends. When the back rest has been brought to the desired position, the knob 23 is liberated and Y the rod 24 moves longitudinally under the action of the spring 26 to rengage the pawl 25 with the ratchet ring 17. Since the ratchet ring is rigidly mounted on the bearing 14 and the pawl 25 coacts therewith the back rest will be maintained in the adjusted position, and can only be altered by again actuating the lever C in the manner above described.
From this description it will be seen that I have invented an adjustable bed for hospitals, sanitariums and like places, whereby a suitable adjustment of the bed can be made to provlde a back rest and so allow the patient to sit up, or recline in the bed.
As many changes could be made in .the above construction and many widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it
is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim' as my invention is:
The combination with a hed, 'a back rest hingedly mounted thereon, y,bearings on the bed, a rod journaled in the bearings, a rocker arm on the rod, a curvilinear arm connecting the rocker arm to the back rest, a ratchet, a ratchet casing secured to the rod, a tubular lever engaging the casing, a col lar intermediate of the length of the tubular casing, a hand grip on the upper end oi the tubular casing, a rod passing through the 15 tubular casing and handle and terminating at the upper end in a knob, a pawl on the end of the rod coacting with the ratchet, and springs between the collar and the pawl.
