MANUFACTURE OF CAST-STEEL CHAIN-LINKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALLEN T. DEXTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Cast-Qteel Chain-Links, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, of mold sections embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof.
My invention relates to the casting of steel chain. links, and consists in the arrangement of mold sections and in the use of such sections for the casting of a plurality of links simultaneously in one pour. My invention also consists in the construction and arrangement of mold sections and in the features which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
In the drawings I have shown a plurality of mold sections 2, 3 and 4:. Each of the mold sections 2 contains in one face two half link impressions 5, and part impressions for a shrinkhead G, a feeder 7, and a sprue 8, respectively. Each mold section 3, similarly to the sections 2, contains on one face two half link impressions 5 and part impressions for a shrinkhead 6, a feeder 7, and a sprue 8; and also contains 011 its opposite face a vertical half impression for a runner 9. The mold section 4 forms the bottom member for the mold stack and is provided in its upper surface with a runner 10, forming a connection between the runner 9 and sprues 8. Placed upon the top of the mold stack and completing the shrinkhead impressions 6 are the cups 11 and 12, the cup 12 also containing a pouring gate 13 connected with the runner 9.
In assembling the mold stack, the mold sections 2, each two of which comprise a complete unit, and the mold sections 3, which on their inner faces complement each other to form the vertical runner 9, and on their outer faces are complementary to a pair of sections 2 to form complete link impressions 5, shrinkheads 6, feeders 7, and sprues 8, are placed in position upon the mold section 42, with the sprues 8 opening into the horizontal runner 10. The cups 11 and 12 are next placed in position upon the top of the stack, and the clamps 14 are applied and secured about the stack by the wedges 15.
When the stack is poured, the metal enters through the pouring gate 13, runs down the vertical runner 9, divides and follows the horizontal, runner 10 and rises through the sprues 8 into the lower link cavities 5. As the pouring continues the metal rises through the impressions 5 for the stud portions of the links, the feeders 7, the upper link cavities 5 and 5 and up in the shrink heads (5 to the top of the cups 11 and 12.
It is to be noted that the feeders 7, while of greater cross section than the link cavities, are smaller than the shrinkheads 6 for the reason that the weight of metal above them tends to force the metal down and thereby gives an adequate supply of metal to the lower links for shrinkage. With the upper links there is not so great a pressure of metal and hence the shrinkheads 6 are made larger to supply a greater reservoir of metal to offset the shrinkage losses in the upper links.
I have found that by the use of the mold sections just described I am enabled to cast chain links very expeditiously, and with a minimum of loss. The arrangement of the link cavities on edge and the pouring through the axis of the link results in the production of sound links.
The terms and expressions which I have employed are intended to be used as terms of description and not of limitation, since I recognize that modifications and rearrangements of the constructions and features which I have described may be made within the scope of the invention claimed.
What I claim is:
1.. The method of making cast steel chain links which consists in assembling sets of mold sections, each set containing link impressions arranged one above the other with the short axes of the impressions arranged vertically, with a connecting feeder between each two of such impressions and a shrinkhead above the uppermost link impression, and with a sprue below the lowermost link impression and a runner connecting such sprue with a pouring gate, pouring the stack so that the metal enters the lowermost link impression, rises through such link impression into a feeder and then into the uppermost link impression, whereby a plurality of links is cast by one pour.
2. A mold stack for casting chain links which consists of a plurality of units; each unit being composed of at least two mold sections having a vertical line of division, and having in the adjacent faces thereof complementary impressions for chain links, a feeder connecting the impressions and a sprue through which the metal is admitted into one of said impressions and through it to the connecting feeder and other link impression; and a mold section having a runner connecting With each of said sprues.
3. A mold stack for casting chain links which consists of a plurality of units of mold sections; each unit having a plurality of link impressions therein arranged one above the other, feeders connecting the link impressions, a mold section forming a base for the units and containing a runner connecting with one of the link impressions in ac-ll unit, and a pouring gate connecting with the runner.

A mold stack for casting chain links which consists in a plurality of units, each unit being composed of at least two mold sections, each unit having a plurality of link nmnessions connected by a feeder, and passages from the upper and lower link impressions leading to the ends of said sections, a mold section forming the base of the stack upon which the units are mounted, a central member having a pouring gate, and a channel through the central member and the base of the stack connecting with a passage in each unit.
5. A mold stack for casting chain links which consists of a plurality of units, each unit providing cavities for a plurality of links arranged one above the other and connected by a shrinkhead cavity, a sprue cavity in each unit, and a pouring cup for the stack connected to each unit by means of a runner.
