This'invention' relates to punch holders such as are 'usedlin connection with a. power press and employed for sheet metal punchhe object of the invention is to provide a novel form of punch holder to be carried by the reciprocating head ot' a power press whereby a tool may be readily supported for operating purposes, and iliarticularly to provide. means whereby the punch will be normally carried loose in the holder so as to first strike lightly on the work to mark the same, and ifurther'to provide hand operating means whereby the same punch may be secured in the holder for effective punching operations.
1n the embodiment of my invention I employ a special form ot sleeve or holder in which thefpunch is removably supported, said sleeve being fitted to the reciprocatory head or other movable part ol" thejprcss, and in connection with the sleeve I provide a slide which when positioned in the sleeve serves to support the punchl'for punching operations, the sleeve is normally disen gaged and adapted to be hand-operated tor f holding the punch in position.
lith these and other objects in View the invention resides and consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that 'various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departure from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages ol the in vention.

Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings, 6 indicates a carrier which in practice would be made in two parts and. secured together by bolts 7. The carrier is secured to the reciprocating head of a press, not shown, and
which may be of any preferred construction. This carrier is provided with a central hole 8 having an annular enlargement 9 around its upper end portion to receive the holder 10 which is of a general cylindrical shape having the outwardly disposed flanges 11 upon the upper end portion that is seated in the said enlargement 9 in the carrier. An annular enlargement 12 on. the lower end of the holder forms an annular shoulder 13 that is seated against the underside oit' the carrier. The holder further includes a longitudinal hole 14 having a contracted lower end 15 -forming an annular shoulder 16 to support the annular fiange 17 around the top of the punch 1S. A side opening 19 With opposite grooves 20-20 are formed in the front side ot the holder to permitthe punch to be introduced from the :front side and to then be dropped down in position so that the ange 17 will rest uponthe shoulder 16 of the holder.
A filling piece 21 is slidably tted in the longitudinal bore 14 and rests upon the head of the punch and is free to movey vertically in the holder with the punch, when the slide 22 is held out of engagement as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. In this connection it will be seen that the punch can only be inserted or removed when the slide is out and the filling block carried above the parallel grooves 20 in the holder.
The slide 22 is positioned to be operated at a right angle to the filling block and punch and when shoved in becomes positioned above the filling block in a manner to hold the same and the punch down in position for eifeetive operations. lThe slide i's fitted in suitable ways of thecarrier and holder and is provided with stops 23 to limit its outward movement. The slide is normally held in its outward position by means of the spring 24 positioned in the longitudinal bore 25 of the slide and having one end seated against the closure plug 28 and the other end :engaging the bearing piece 27 slidably mounted' in the slots 26-26 formed in the opposite sides of the slide mounted in the slots and having its two ends shouldered against the face of the carrier.
Then the slide is extended its inner end is free and clear of the spacer block so-that the same and its punch will be free torise' in the holder when the punch comes in contact with the work by Vthe verticalreciprocation of the head, and will likewise promptly slidn back to their normal resting place l when the head of the machine is raised.
From the foregoing it will be seen that with the slide in this position a light operation of the point oi' thc puncl will be had upon the stock if placed beneath the punch,
which will be sulicient to mark the metal so l `that the operator can determine if the metal is properly placed beneath the punch for a punching operation, and when found t0 be properly positioned, the slide would be shoved inovcr the top of the block'while the head is in its raised position, thus lookin the punch and causing it to enter the meta with the next stroke of the press.
Having thus described my invention, what I lclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is` l. In a punch holder, the combination with a reciprocating carrier, of a holder mounted therein having a longitudinal bore and means for supporting a punch therein, a punch mounted therein, a spacer block resting upon and adapted to reciprocate withthe punch in the holder, a slide fitted in the holderand adapted to engage the block to secure the punch in position, and means to normally hold the slide in a disengaged position. v
2. ln a punch holder, the combination with a reciprocating carrier, of a holder mounted therein having alongitudinal bore and an opening in its side to receive the punch. a spacer block loosely mounted in thc holder above the punch, a slide adapted to be manually operated to engage the block and lock the punch, and spring,r means to normally hold the slide out of engagement.
