IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID-BED 'BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,562, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE A. TowsLEY, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement; in Bed-Bottoms; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con struction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawing making a partof this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
This invention has relation to invalid-bed bottoms; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices for raising and holding at an inclination a portion of the bed-bottom for the ease and convenience of the occupant, substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, A A designate a bed-bottom divided into two equal or unequal sections transversely, which are hinged together at the adjacent ends of the raised side boards B B, the hinge-pins a being arranged at the upper edges of said side boards, as shown. 0 designates hinge-plates secured to hinged ends of the section A, which, in the accompanying drawing, is represented as the larger,theotherbeingtheheadofthebed. From the lower parts of said hinge-plates project the segmental upwardly-curvin g toothed racks'fi cause the section A to be elevated to any 7 A desired height. To the pivot of one of the hinges is attached a pawl, h, which engages with one of the pinions, and, by preventing the latter from turning back when the section A is raised, serves to hold said section up.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hinged bed-bottom having the plate 0 provided with the curved toothed rack l), and shaft E having-*at one end the pinion E and lever G, substantially as specified.
