lNl/EIVTUR M071 A TTORNE Y 8 UNITED WILLIAM F. SIGLER, LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED OIL-CUP AND PACKING-GLAND.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Jan. 11, 1921.
Application filed April 17, 1920. Serial No. 374,606.
My invention relates to improvements in combination oil cups and packing glands,
and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements hereln described and claimed.
An ob ect of my invention is to provide a novel form of combination 011 cup and packing gland, which is designed for usewith a mechanism provided with an upright piston rod, and which is provided with means for effectively lubricating the-piston rod while also performing the function for which a packing gland is ordinarily employed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which means is provided for keeping the piston rod constantly immersed in a lubricant.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described, which can be filled with a lubricating substance while the apparatus to which applied is in service.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which means is provided for preventing the lubricating fluid being ejected by the operation of the piston rod.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that is durable in construction and thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in Wl11Cl1=-- The figure is a side elevation of the device operatively applied, portions being broken away and other portions being shown in section.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I make use of a pair of vertically disposed co-axially alined cylinders 1 and 2 provided respectively with cylinder heads 3 and 4: which aresecured thereto in an ordinary manner, as by bolts 5. A piston rod 6 is arranged to be reciprocated within-the cylinders 1 and 2. The parts described so far are of ordinary construction and form no part of my invention except in so far as they cooperate with the parts about to be described.
It will be noted that I provide a casing having an enlarged bowl-like upper portion 7 and being formed with a vertically extending central bore 8 which is adapted to receive the piston rod 6. The central bore 8 opens at its upper end into a cavity 9 in which a lubricating substance is placed. The upper edge of the enlarged portion 7 is beveled and is formed with an inwardly extending integral flange 10 which overhangs the cavity 9 and prevents the lubrieating substance placed therein being ejected by the operation of the piston rod 6.
fAcylindrical lower portion 11 of the casing is formed with a central recess 12- through which the piston rod 6 extends. Packing 1 1 is arranged between the inner wall of the central recess 12 and the piston rod 6. The lower portion 11 of the casing may be secured to the cylinder head 4 in any suitable manner. In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, I have shown the lower end thereof reduced and threaded eXteriorly at 13.
This threaded end 13 is screwed into a threaded opening 15 which is formed through the cylinder head 1. The lower portion 11 of the casing has a plurality of vertically extending grooves 16 in its outer surface which are adapted to receive the jaws of a spanner wrench so that the casing can be conveniently secured in operative position.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. A lubricating substance is placed within the cavity 9 and willkeep the piston rod 6 constantly lubricated, thereby preventing the wearing out of the piston rod as quickly as is the case when my improved device is not used.
The arrangement of the oil cup and packing gland will more than double the life plied, will function to better advantage. A properly lubricated piston, will to a great extent, assist lubricating the cylinder particularly since the piston is vertically disposed. The inwardly extending beveled flange 10 will prevent the lubricating substance being blown from the cup by the operation of the piston rod. One of the principal advantages oi the device lies in the fact that the cup can be refilled while the piston rod is being operated. Furthermore, when it is desired to renew the packing, it is not necessarv to remove the device from the piston rod as it will be obvious that the device may be moved along the piston rod 6 until the packing land 17, which is shown in the accompanying drawings as being secured to the cylinder head 3, is partly received within the cavity 9, thereby affording ample space for performing the work re quired and permitting access to the cylinder 1.
I claim:
1. The combination with a cylinder having a cylinder head and a vertically disposed piston rod mounted to be reciprocated there in, of a combination oil cup and packing gland comprising a single integral casing formed with a vertically extending central bore adapted to receive the piston rod, said casing having a bowl-like upper portion provided with a substantially bowl-shaped cavity for holding a lubricating substance and having its upper edge beveled and fashioned with an inwardly extending annular flange arranged to overhang the cavity, and a lower cylindrical portion having a vertically extending central recess adapted to receive packing, said lower portion having its lower end reduced and threaded for screwing in a threaded opening in a cylinder head and having a plurality of vertical grooves provided in its outer surface.
2. The combination with a cylinder having a cylinder head and a vertically disposed piston rod mounted to be reciprocated therein, of a combination oil cup and packing gland comprising a casing formed with a vertically extending central bore adapted to receive the piston rod, said casing having a bowl-like upper portion provided with a cavity for holding a lubricating substance and having its upper edge beveled and fashioned with an inwardly extending annular flange, and a lower cylindrical portion having a vertically extending central recess adapted to receive packing, said lower por tion having its lower end reduced and threaded for screwing in a threaded opening in a cylinder head and having a plurality of vertical grooves provided in its outer surface.
