T0 aZZ 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, HAROLD AUGUSTINE ToLLnY Guns'r, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 44 Drayton road, Kings Heath, in the city of Birmingham., England, insurance agent, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for the Burning of Candles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to holders for the burning of candles of the kind described in the specifications of my prior British Letters Patent Nos. 184475 and 134583, that 1s to say, in which the candle is pushed up to a shoulder in a tubular piece carrying at its upper end an overflow cup for wax, or the like, and a plug slidably ts within the tubular piece to provide by its upper end a stationary support for the lower end of the candle during the burning, at which time said tubular piece bodily and gradually falls.
The invention uses a single overflow cup at the upper end of the tubular piece, car ries centrally thereof the side walls of a shallow upwardly extending socket the bottom of which is provided by the upper end of the plug, and perforates or provides holes through said side walls to drain the waX from the cup into the socket, particularly when the last bit of candle is being burnt, at which time the upper end of the plug provides the bottom to the socket.
The invention is represented by the drawing which is a vertical section of the parts of the holder in the positions they would assume if a short length of candle was inclosed therein.
The bottom Z3 of the socket Z is formed by the upper end of a central plug c' over which a tubular piece I7' slidably lits to carry at its upper end the overflow cup c and the side walls of the socket Z through which the drain holes (Z2 are provided. Thecandle is inserted up the tube j so that its burning end projects to the upper edge of the socket d and so that its lower end rests against the upper end @Z3 of the plug, which is suitably supported by the base part Z of the candle holder.
The tube j and its cup c and socket walls rest upon the burning edge of the candle as a weight, and as the candle burns away, supported always by the plug z', this tube j gradually falls until on the burning of Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J an.' 111-,` 1921.

the last piece of candle the upper end Z3 of the plug provides a closing bottom to the socket CZ, so that the melted wax flowing from the cup into the socket during the burning of the last bit of candle cannot Vescape from said socket.
Air holes such as m may be provided through the walls of the tube l7' to keep cool the walls of the socket d until the burning of the last bit of candle, when said air holes are closed to said socket by moving over the plug z' and preferably into an external tube 1t rigidly supported from the base Z of the candle holder, the idea of the air holes m being to prevent the overflow waX becoming melted until the burning of the last bit of candle.
It will be seen that the interior walls Z4 of the socket d are slightly tapering with the upper edge 2 of the plug z' inclined to suit. The effect of this slight taper is that during normal burning the upper end of the candle is so softened by the heat as to cause said upper end to normally project approximatelylevel with the upper edge of the socket.
Having now described my invention what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a candle holder, a base having a tube secured thereto, a plug mounted within said tube, a vertically movable tube adapted to automatically slide between said plug and stationary tube as the candle burns, said movable tube having a tapered portion provided with va plurality of apertures formed therein, an overfiow cup secured to -said movable tube near the upper end thereof adapted to communicate with the interior of said movable tube through said apertures, said movable tube being also provided with a series of openings adjacent said overflow cup for preventing the overflow of wax from becoming melted until the candle has burned suiciently for said plug to cover said openings when the overflow may be melted and burned by the last bit of the burning candle.
