MATTHIAS CHRISTMAN, 0F SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
LOCKING-VALVE.
Application filed June 27,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAT'rHIAs CHRIST- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in looking valves, and has for its object the provision of such a valve which ischeaply, constructed and the parts of which are readily assembled.
At present there are valves of this type on the market but the majority of these valves are so constructed that the wear of the parts causes a leakage through the valve and destroys the utility thereof. While some of these valves have provided means for taking up the play due to wear in the valve, this cannot be done without disassembling the lock of the valve, involving a great amount of labor and expense.
To overcome the above objections, I have provided a'valve so constructed that it automatically takes up the wear due to use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my valve;
Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section thereof;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4; is a section on line 44 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1,;
Fig. 6 is a section on line 66 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the locking attachment removed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the barrel of the lock and 2 the key operated member thereof which rotates in the central opening 1 in the barrel. The barrel of the lock is provided with the usual spring expressed tumblers 6 held in place by a sleeve 7 having screw threaded engagement with the exterior of the barrel and doweled or otherwise secured in position.
The inner end of the key operated member 2 is provided with a flange 3 having a cutout portion 1. This flange abuts the end of the lock barrel and a pin 5 secured to the Specification of Letters Patent.

1919. Serial No. 307,227.
end of the barrel engages in the cutout portion, as will be clearly seen inFig. 4. This pin cooperating with the cutout portion of the flange limits the rotation of the key operated section of the lock.
Connected with the lock barrel, as at 8, is a valve casing 9 having a central bore forming a chamber. 10.' The-casing 9 is provided with an inlet openingfll having an extension 12, which communicates with the chamber 10 and an outlet opening 13 whichcommunicates directly with the chamber 10. Mounted within'the chamber 10 is a disk valve 14; having spaced shoulders 15 formed thereon. Through these shoulders extends a pin 16 for a purpose hereinafter to appear. The valve 14 is provided with an opening 17 adapted to register with the branch 12 of the inlet 11 when the pin 5 is at one end of the cutout portion 4 of the flange 8.
F ormedon the face of the flange 3 is an upstanding shoulder 18 which projects between the shoulders 15 of the valve 14 and is provided with a slot receiving the pin 16. Mounted intermediate the valve and the flange is a compression spring 19.
It will be obvious to those familiar with the art, that this tension spring will compensate for all wear onthe valve and the moving parts of my device and thus afford a tight joint in the valve. The valve being spring expressed will grind its own seat at each turning movement. In order to somewhat reduce the friction caused by the en gagement of the faces of the flange with the barrel of the lock and the valve with its seat I have provided in the face of the barrel and in the face of the valve recesses 20 adapted to receive a lubricant 21.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention,I claim j 1. The combination with a lock having a'rotatable key-operated member provided upon its inner end with a flange having a cutout portion and a pin mounted upon the body of the lock adapted to engage in the cutout portion and limit the rotation of the rotatable member, of a casing secured thereto having a central bore forming a chamber, an inlet port and an outlet port, a disk valve closing said inlet port and having a port adapted to register with said inlet port, means connecting said key-operated member and said disk valve whereby said valve is rotated simultaneously with said member, and a compression spring mounted intermediate the inner end or said member and said valve.
2. The combination with a lock having a rotatable key-operated member provided upon its inner end with a flange having a cutout portion and a pin mounted uponthe body of the lock adapted to engage in said cutout portion and limit the rotation of the rotatable member, of a casing secured thereto having a central bore forming a chamber, an inlet port and an outlet port in said chamber, a disk valve normally closing said inlet port and having a port adapted to register with said inlet port, means connecting said key-operated member and said disk valve whereby said disk valve is rotated simultaneously with said member com prising a shoulder formed on said valve having a pin mounted therein and a shoulder formed on the inner end of said rotatable member provided with an elongated slot adapted to receive the pin in the shoulder on said valve, and a compression spring intermediate the inner end of said member and said valve and surrounding said shoulder.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
MATTHIAS GHRISTMAN.
