INVENTOR I TS/ri [c6 K/WW4 fi f ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
IRA. THOMPSON SKILES, OF LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR BATHTUBS.
Application filed March 19, 1919.
.['0 all to from it may concern Be it known that I, InA THOMPSON SKILEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Bathtubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in attachments for bath tubs, and has for its object to provide mechanism in connection with the outlets of a bath tub for simultaneously controlling the waste and the discharge, and so connected that when the waste is open the discharge is closed and when the a discharge is open the waste is closed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section through a tub provided with the improved attachment;
Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1;
Figs. 3 and 4 are front views of the waste valve section;
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the operating mechanism for the movable section.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a bath tub 1 of conventional form, having the usual waste outlet 2 which is connected by an elbow 3 with a discharge pipe 4. This pipe has an extension 5 which extends upwardly to the waste opening at the end of the tub. The tub is supplied with hot and cold water through valves 6 and 7 in the usual manner, but instead of the usual restricted outlet from the common connection 8 between the valves or faucets, there is provided a pipe 9 which extends tothe bottom of the tub, delivering just above the outlet 2. This pipe is offset toward the end of the tub, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it passes down near the end wall of the tub, being ofii'set forwardly from the waste opening.
The waste opening has a sectional valve, consisting of a section 9 and a section 10, both of circular form and superposed and pivoted together so that the section 10 may rotate on the section 9. These sections have radial slots or passages, which are adapted to register in certain positions of the sections to permit the discharge of waste water, but which may be closed by shifting the movable section 10. The movement of the section 10 with respect to the section 9 is Specif cation of Letters Patent.

limited by a lug 11 on the section 9 which engages within a circumferentially extend ing notch 12 in the peripheral edge of the section 10.
The said section 10 may move on the section 9 the length of the notch 12, but it will be checked from further movement by the engagement of the lug 11 with the ends of the notch. In order to permit the plug 13 of the outlet to be lifted without reaching beneath the water in the tub, a link 14: is provided, the said link having a handle or grip 15 at its upper end and being mounted to slide in gearing rings 16 on the pipe 9.
The lower end of the link is curved outwardly and is pivoted to the plug as shown at 17 in Fig. 2, so that whatever the position of the link the plug will be held directly above the opening 2. The lever is provided with a lug 17 below the lowermost bearing ring 16, for engaging the said ring to limit the upward sliding movement of the link in the rings to substantially the position shown in Fig. 2. That is, the plug may move just far enough to open the outlet.
The link 14 is also connected with the section 10 of the waste valve for opening and closing the said valve. This section has a lug 18 on its outer face, which is between a pair of lugs 19 on the link, the said lugs being spaced apart vertically so that they will engage the lug 18 alternately. Just as the plug 13 is moved into the outlet opening, the uppermost lug 19 will engage the lug 18 and will move the valve 10 to open the waste outlet, while when the plug 13 is lifted by the link, just at the end of the upward movement of the link, the lowermost lug 19 will engage the lug 18 and will close the valve. All of the water entering the tub will be discharged at the bottom and will be discharged laterally along the bottom, instead of directly against the bottom, thus eliminating the pounding of the water on the tub and on the water already in the tub.
In operation, when it is desired to take a bath, the link 14.- is moved downward to insert the plug 13 in the opening 2. The same movement opens the waste outlet. The valves 6 and 7 are now opened, and the water flows quietly into the tub, filling the same. After a layer of water is run upon the bottom of the tub the water entering flows beneath this layer. When it is desired to discharge the Water, the link 14 is moved upwardly, thus opening the plug and closing the Waste valve.
1 claim:
1. In a bath tub, having a Waste outlet near its top and a valve controlling the outlet, 01 means for moving the said valve to open and close the same, the tub having a discharge outlet in its bottom and a plug for closing the same, and a connection between the said plug and the waste valve controlling means for opening and closing the plug.
2. In a bath tub having a waste outlet near its top, and a discharge outlet at its bottom, a valve for controlling the Waste outlet, a plug for closing the discharge outlet, and a link having guided movement vertically at the end of the tub and connected with the plug for operating the same, and
a connection between the link and the valve 20 for controlling said valve.
