IRA J. OWEN AND BERNARD J.'BOUW1VIEESTER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNORS T9 BISSELD CARPET SWEEPER COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS,
MICHIGAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1921.
Application filed April 30, 1920. Serial No. 377,967.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IRA J. OWEN and BERNARD J. BoUwMEEsrER, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, county of Kent, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nozzle Locking and Retaining Means for Vacuum-Cleaners,; of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in nozzle locking and retaining means for vacuum cleaners.
The object of the invention is to simplify such devices and provide the same with effective guiding and securing means whereby their operation is facilitated.
A further object is to provide a very economical structure for the purpose, with a minimum number of parts, economical to build and effective in operation.
We accomplishthe objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is defined and pointed out'in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying. drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side view of the front end of a vacuum cleaner with one of our improved nozzle locks and guides in place.
Fig. II is a detail elevation view, similar to that of Fig. I, in which the nozzle block is somewhat separated from the case of the vacuum cleaner.
Fig. III is a detail view of the sheet metal blank from which the nozzle block guide and catch piece are formed.
Fig. IV is a similar detail view of the blank of the supporting plate for the pivoted latch.
Fig. Vis an elevation view of the latch and extended lever, taken from the inside of the latch, as seen in Fig. II, the pivoted pin or retaining screw being shown in cross section.
Fig. VI is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. V, looking in the direction of the little arrows at the end of the sectionline.
In the drawing, similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, the front part of the case 1 is of the usual form and a nozzle block 2 is fitted thereto and provided with the usual gasket and the like. On the nozzle block is supported the guide and catch plate 3, provided with integrally formed guide fingers 4c for engaging the sides of the case 1 and provided with an outturned catch piece 5, the same being retained upon the nozzle block by the screws 6 or other suitable means.
The latch hook 7 is provided with an eye '7 engaging the eccentric 9 on the actuating lever 8, these parts being pivoted to the side of the case by screw 11, which passes through the supporting plate 13 as well. The eccentric 9 is retained upon the lever by the rivet 10 and is pivoted about the screw 11 which of course passes through the lever 8 and is the pivot on which the eccentric is turned by means of the said lever.
A projecting stop 12 is on the lever 8 disposed to engage under the latch hook 7 and elevate the same and disengage it from the catch 5 when the lever is actuated to release the book 7.
A stop lug 14 is turned out on the plate 13 to retain the hook 7 and support it in convenient position to be swung into engagement with the catch 5. A beveled point 15 projects from said plate to engage the guide fingers on the latch part and guide the nozzle block to place.
We desire to state that the improved hook structure might be made use of with any convenient catch, although it is especially adapted to cooperate with the special catch which is designed to cooperate with a hook of this kind.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with the case and nozzle block of a vacuum cleaner, a catch and guide plate 3 conformed to said nozzle block, having an integral upwardly-inclined guide finger at the side and an integral catch struck up therefrom, a lever, an eccentric secured to said lever, an engaging lug or hook with an eye engaging said eccentric, said lug or hook being adapted to engage said catch, a plate on which the said lever and eccentric carrying said hook are pivotally mounted, the same being provided with integrally struck up stop portions to limit the movements of the said latch hook, and a projecting beveled part to coact with the guide finger on the catch plate to guide the catch plate to place.
2. In combination with the case and nozzle block of a vacuum cleaner, a catch and guide plate 3 conformed to said nozzle block, having an integral guide finger at the side and an integral catch struck up therefrom, a lever, an eccentric secured to said lever, an engaging lug or hook with an eye engaging said eccentric, said lug or hook be ing adapted to engage said catch, a plate on which the said lever and eccentric carrying said hook are pivotally mounted, the same being provided with integrally struck up stop portions to limit the movements of the said latch hook, and a projecting beveled part to guide the catch plate to place.
3. In combination with the case and nozzle block of a vacuum cleaner, a catch and guide plate 3 conformed to said nozzle block, having an integral upwardly-inclined guide finger at the side and an integral catch struck up therefrom, a latch plate provided with a projecting beveled part to coact with the guide finger on the catch plate to guide the catch plate to place, and lock means carried by said latch plate adapted to engage said catch.
4. In combination with the case and nozzle block of a vacuum cleaner, a catch and guide plate 3 conformed to said nozzle block, having an integral guide finger at the side and an integral catch struck up therefrom, a latch plate provided with a projecting beveled part to coact with the guide finger on the catch plate to guide the catch plate to place, and lock means carried by said latch plate adapted to engage said catch.
In witness whereof, We have hereunto set our hands and seals in the presence of two witnesses.
IRA J. OWEN.
