UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN Hv EDWARDS, OF SPIRIT LAKE, AND GEORGE W. EMERY, OF ARNOLDS PARK, IOWA.
TOY.
Application filed November 6, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CALVIN H. EDWARDS and GEORGE WV. EMERY, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Spirit Lake and Arnolds Park, in the county of Dickinson and State of Iowa, haveinvented certain new and'useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toys, and more particularly to a target having novel means of advising one when the target has been hit.
An important object of this invention is to provide a toy target including a pair of figures one of which is adapted for use as a target and which when struck will cause the other figure to be moved for operating a signal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toy of the class described which is simple to operate and is safe and desirable in use. v I
A further object of the invention is to provide a toy of the class described which is especially adapted for use as a source of amusement for both young and old.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy embodying the invention, 7
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the opposite side of the toy and illustrating the various positions of the several figures,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, V
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective of one of the figures.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustrationis shown a prefered embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a fiat base upon which is mounted a figure 6 in the form of a horse or donkey. The body 7 of the donkey or horse stands longitudinally of the base and is secured in position upon the same by a vertical bracket or standard 8 which is connected to the intermediate portion of the figure and has its lower end portion secured to the base by suitable attaching means 9. The animal is pro vided with relatively stationary front legs Specification of Letters Patent.

10 and horizontally pivoted rear legs 11. A pivot element 12 is passed transversely through the body and the upper portions of the legs 11 to permit the same to be swung rearwardly simultaneously. Either or both the springs 22 and 28 may be employed for operating the legs 11.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, a second figure 13 in the form of a man is mounted upon the base rearwardly of the donkey and is adapted to be struck on the rearward pivotal movement of the legs of the donkey. A
to one side of the body 7 by a pair of longitudinally extending attaching flanges 19 arranged on opposite sides of the same.
laterally projecting arm 23 is threaded into the forward portion of the plunger and is slidably extended through a longitudinally extending slot 24 in the guide 18. The outer portion of the arm 23 is. looped to provide an eye 25 through which is extended a setting arm or rod 26. When the arm 26 is manually drawn toward the forward portion of the guide, the spring 22 is tensioned and the legs 11 are brought to a vertical position through the medium of a flexible connecting element 27. A second coil spring 28 is connected to the lower portion ofone of the rear legs and to the base by an eye 29 and is adapted to swing the legs rearwardly When the device is set for use, the plunger 20 is drawn into the rear portion of the guide or barrel 18 and the loop or catch 31 is engaged with a depending anchoring arm 32. As illustrated in Fig. 1 the arm 32 1s rigidly secured to a block 33 by rivets 34; or other suitable fastening devices. The block 33 which is secured to the neck 35 of the animal is provided with a second dependin rod or arm 36 and pivotally supports a lever or trigger 37. The lever 37 which 1s pivoted intermediate its ends as indicated at 38 has its rear end portion arranged above the loop 31 when the same is set. The actuating means for the lever 37 includes a laterally projecting bracket or arm 38 carried by the hinged nose 39 of the animal. As indicated in Figs. 2 and 4, the nose or forward portion of the animals head is connected to the remaining portion of the head by a hinge 40.
As indicated in Fig. 3, the front side of the animal is padded as indicated at 41 so that when a ball or other projectile strikes the same the animal will not be broken or disfigured.
In setting the device for use, the plunger is manually drawn forwardly through the guide 18 and is secured in position by engaging the loop or catch 31 with the depending rod 32. The rear legs 11, which are connected, are drawn forwardly simultaneously with the forward movement of the plunger 20 by the flexible element 27. Prior to securing the catch 31 to the arm 32 the lever 37 is arranged in the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 2 and the nose is arranged to project directly forwardly from the head.
In the use of the device, one stands at a point spaced considerably from the base and throws a ball or other projectile at the hinged nose 39. When the nose 39 is struck the projecting bracket 38 engages the forward portion of the trigger or lever 37 and causes the rear portion of the same to disengage the catch or loop 31 with the rod 32. When the loop 31 has been disengaged with the rod 32, the plunger is moved rearwardly by spring tension and is caused to strike the shoulder 21 formed on one of the rearlegs. The sudden striking of the plunger 20 with the projection 21 causes the legs to be moved swiftly rearwardly and to kick the figure 13. It will be noted that the figure 13 is swung rearwardly about on a horizontal axis and is caused to sound the vibratory horn 17. Simultaneously with the release of the plunger 20 the flexible element 27 is released to with the le 's 11.
lt is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of permit the spring 28 to cooperate plunger 20 in kicking the rear the same and that such minor changes in arrangement and the construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.
