Be it known that I, GEORGE T. Pnansons, a citizenJ of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers', of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fire extinguishers of the type in which a fire extinguishing liquid is ejected from a reservoir `by the pressure of a gas, such gas being the reaction of the mixing ofgas generating; materials normally heldin a separatedl condition in a generator inthe reservoir, and it is the primary object ofl the invention to provide a fire extinguisher of this type which is in the nature of an automaticunit sprinkler apparatusv adapted to be removably supported in an opening in a ceiling or suspended from a suitable support, andl automatically set in operation when the surrounding temperature attains a predetermined degree.
A further object ofthel invention is to provide a fire extinguisher of this type in which a generator is employed in which the gas generating materialsl are maintained in a separated condition when the generator is held in one `or an upright position and the materials are adapted to mix when the generator is held n another or inverted po sition.
It is another object of the invention to provide an.l extinguisher in which the generator is pivotally supported and retained in an upright position in the reservoir by releasable lmeans controlled by fusible means, the fusing of the fusible means controlling .the discharge of the liquid from the reservoir andreleasing the generator to permit it to vassume an inverted position with the consequent mixing` of the materials and generating of gas to forcibly eject the liquid from the reservoir;
A further object is' to provide means.
whereby a portion ofthe generated. gas will be discharged with the liquid from the reservoir, the discharge of such gas with the liquid atomizing or causing the fire extinguishing liquid to be dischargedv ina very fine spray.

The reservoir has an' opening ilr the bottom in which is fixed a tube 8 extending into the reservoir to adjacent the top with the lower end preferably extending for a short distance out from the reservoir. ySlidably supported in the' tube'Sis a tube 9 of less diameter and longer than the tube S, the rinner end of said tube having a tubular en# largement l0 with lateralportsll communicating with the tube and said enlargement or head where it is connected to the tube being beveled or cone-shaped, as at'l2, to co operate with a correspondingly shaped seat in the top` ofthet'ube'S. vThe tubel) is in the nature of a carrier fora sprinkler head 14 preferablyv of cone! shape* carried and nml fixed by a stein l5 to the tube so that it will lie adjacent the end of the tube, and the end V of the tube is preferably inclined or beveled inward to correspond with the bevel of the cone portion of the head, as shown at 16. The outer end of the tube 8 is closed by a cover or cap of fusible material l? inclosing the sprinkler head and preventing the accumulation of foreign substances on the head with the possible clogging and corrosion of said head.
The tubes 8 and 9 have communication with thetinterior of the reservoir through a tube 18 through which said tubes extend and spaced from the tube 8, the said tube 18 being` closed and supported at its lewer end, as at 19, and open at its upper end, with a lateral port 2O at its lower end adjacent the bottom of the reservoir closed by an inwardly opening and outwardly closing check valve 2l. The carrier tube 9 for the sprinkler head carries at its inner end a further tube 22 closed at the end where it is connected to said carrier 9, the said tube ernbracing the tube 18 and extending to adjacent the bottom of the reservoir.
Pivotally supported within the reservoir is a receptacle G, which is in the nature of a gas generator, having an outlet 23 leading into the reservoir with a spring influenced checkI valve 24 opening outward from and closing into the generator. In the present instance the generator is carried in a cage 25 rotatably supported by a laterally projecting shaft 26,1ixed theretojournaled in a bracket 28.
As stated this `generator is of a type in which gas generating materials, such as bicarbonate of soda and sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, are normally held in a separated condition when the generator is in` an upright position and are adapted to come in contact and mix when the generator is inverted. The receptacle G has an open top closed by a removable cover 29. To hold gas generating materials in a separated condition in the receptacle Gr in the normal position thereof there provided a receptacle l( open at one end and of less width than the receptacle G to provide i space between the two receptacles and held iu spaced relation by lugs 3l extending` laterally from the re ceptacle 39 engaging with the walls of the receptable (l. The receptacle 30 apported upon an annular shoulder or ring` 82 fixed within the receptacle G at some vdistance from the bottom, the engagement of the receptacle with this ringseparating the lewer portion of the receptacle from the upper portion providing a chamber 33 in said ree ceptacle` below the receptacle 30 for a purpose to be hereinafter describefh A third receptacle 34 adapted to carry one of the gas generating materials, such as sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, engages .in
the receptacle 30 and in the normal position of the generator is supported upon the bottom of said receptacle. This receptacle B4 maybe of a size as to width the same as the receptacle 30, but is of less height to leave a space in the receptacle 30 above said receptacle 34, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The top of the receptacle 34 is closed but is at all times in communication with the receptacle G by tubes 35 extending to the top or beyond the top of the receptacle 30. By this construction the receptacle 30 is adapted to carry the other gas generating material, such as bicarbonate of soda, above the receptacle 34 and separated from the material in said latter receptacle. It will be `obvious that when the generator is inverted the soda will drop against the cover 29 which will in said position be the bottom, and the acid in the receptacle 34 will drip through the tubes 35 onto the soda and admix therewith generating gas. The receptacle 34 is maintained in position adjacent the bottom of the receptacle 30 when inverted bya rod 86 fixed to the cover extending to a point adjacent the receptacle 34. However, the rod is of such length so that when the generator is inverted the receptacle will move slightly away from the supporting flange connecting the upper and lower parts of the generating chamber and permitting the generated gas to pass between the walls of the receptacles into the chamber 33 and through said chamber out through the outlet 23. y
The fire extinguishing liquid is of such a nature that it will not injure articles with which it comes in contact, such as wearing apparel, furniture, carpets and the like. However, the nature of the gas generating materials is such that articles with which it may come in contact will be destroyed and ruined, and it very often happens that pon tions of said materials are carried ofi' with the generated, gas into the reservoir and expelled with the fire extinguishing liquid with the above deleterious results. To prevent this contingency means is provided to render the generated anhydrous or dry and non-acid by filtering the generated gas. For this purpose l provide a material through which the generated gas passes to absorb any moisture in such gas sodium carbonate having been found to answerl the purpose. This absorbing material is located in the chamber 33 and normally separated from the upper portion of the receptacle G by the engagement of the receptacle 1%() with its supporting flange 32. To prevent this material from dropping into the reacting materials when the generator is inverted. there is provided a fine mesh screen 37 removably secured to the ange To prevent the generated gas from expelling any lli) of thefiltering material through the outlet 23 there is connected to the outlet ay tube 38 to extend into the chamber v38, said tube having lateral ports 89 with a fine mesh screen 40 extending around said ports. The generator is maintained in its normal position by releasable latching means, shown as consisting of a bolt 41carried by the generator carrying cage 25' to engage with a bifurcated end of a lug 22 extending laterally from the closure for the top of the tube 22 when said tube is maintained in its raised position by the fusible means through the tube 9.
In charging the extinguisher the discharging tube is adjusted so that the bolt 41 will engage with the bifurcated lug 22 when the fusible cover 17 is appliedto retain the parts in such position, when the charged generator is placed into the top of its carryingcage 25and retained therein by a releasable closure 42 for said opening, after which the reservoir is supplied with the fire extinguishing liquid and the cover 4 applied thereto when the extinguisher is placed in its support 7 and supported therein by the lugs 5.
In operation When a fire occurs and the atmosphere reaches a predetermined temperature above the ordinary atmospheric temperaturethe fusible means will be fused or melted releasing the discharge tube 9 carrying the sprinklerhead permitting it to drop through the open end of the tube 8 until the cone portion 12 engages with the seat 13. The tube 22 being connected. to the tube 9 willdrop with kit away from the bolt 41 when the generator will? swing with its cage to assume an inverted position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, it being understood that the generator carrying cage isso supported thatl the cage with the generator will tend to assume suchy position by gravity when the bolt 41 is released by the tube lug 22. As the generator assumes this position the soda will drop against the cover 29, thenv the bottom of the generator and the receptacle 34 will drop away from tht;l
screen 37 until it engages with the end of the rod-36, and the acid: will drip from the receptacle 34, through tubes 35` .onto said soda immediately generating gas, the generated gas passing through the space between the receptacles 30 and G, through the filtering material intoV the outlet tube 88 and through the outletrk 23 into the:` reservoir 1 where the expansive force of such on the liquid in the reservoir will expel the liquid through the port 20 into tube 18 and up through said tube through the ports 11 ofthe tubular enlargement of the tube 9 and out through said latter tube, the sprinkler head diffusing said liquid laterally in all directions as it passes out from the tube 9'. l
` t willbe obvious that the tube18' in some instances could be dispensed with as shown in Fig. 2, in which instance theliquid in the reservoir is forcedup the tube 22 and from said tube through the ports 11 into the tube 9. r
The fusible closure for the reservoir opening consists of an annular member 43 having screwthreaded connection with the outer end of the tube 8, the said member having an inward extending Piange with an opening preferably of slightly greater diameter than the tube 9.y This opening is closed by a disk consistingof sections 44 of non-fusible material secured together and retained in the opening in the member 48 by a fusible shoulder, as shown at 45. When a lire occurs and the surrounding atmosphere reaches a predetermined. temperature the fusible solder holding the sections together and said sections in the opening in the memvber 43 will be melted and the sections drop from the opening. To prevent any possif bility of said fused material coming in conn tact with the sprinkler head connected to the tube 9 there is provided a disk 46 of nonfusible metal on the inner side of the sections 44, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, such disk being of such diameter as to permit it t0 readily pass through the opening inthe member 43.
As stated it is anobj ect of the invention to discharge a portion of the generated gas from the reservoir to atomize or discharge the liquid from the reservoir in a fine spray. For this purpose, as shown in Fig. 3, a tube 4T having a restricted Opening therethrough is carried by the discharge tube to extend therethrough with its lower end ad jacent the lower end of the discharge tube and its upper end communicating with the reservoir, as shown at 48. This tube, as shown, may also serve as the carrier for the head 14 to connect the head` to the discharge tube, as at 49. The tubeL 47 has lateral ports 50 adjacent the head 14 whereby as the liq uid fronii the reservoir. is forcibly ejected through the discharge tube from the reservoir a very fine liet or jets ofgas will be impinged upon said discharging liquid inst Aabove the sprinkler headthereby breaking up the discharging" liquid into small particles with the consequent resultthat the liquid will be discharged in a fine spray. i

G. ln a fire extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a lire extinguishing` liquid having an outlet; fusible means to seal said outlet; a generator having an outlet and means to hold gas generating materials therein in a separated condition when in an upright position and permit said materials to mix when it is inverted; a cage to carry said generator having a laterally projecting shaft to pivotally support the cage in the reservoir; and means held in position by the fusible closure for the reservoir outlet to cooperate With'means carried by the cage to maintain the cage in position with the generator in an upright position, said means being adapted to release the cage upon the fusing of the fusible closure for the reservoir outlet and permit the cage to assume a position with the generator in an inverted position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a fire extinguisher, the Combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid arranged to be supported in fixed position and having an opening adapted to be sealed by fusible' means; a pivotally supported gas generator in the reservoir having an outlet leading into the reservoir and having means to holdgenerating materials'in a separated condition when in upright position and permit said materials to mix when inverted; andv a tube through which to discharge the liquid from the reservoir normally positioned Within the reservoir and shut off from the exterior of the reservoir bythe fusible means and said tube arranged to cooperate with the generator tomaintain the generator in upright position when positioned Within the reservoir, the fusing of said fusible means permitting said tube to be projected from and discharge the liquid exterior of the reservoir and by such movement releasing the generator to permit it to assume an inverted position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a fire extinguisher, the combination of' a reservoir fora fire extinguishing liquid having an opening in the bottom; a tube fixed in-said opening extending adjacent the top of the reservoir; fusible means to close the lower end of said tube; a generator in which to generate gas in the reservoir having an outlet leading into the reservoir; and
a tube through which to discharge the liquid from the reservoir extending through the first tube, the fusible means also shutting off said tube from the exterior of the reservoir, and the fusing of said fusible means opening said tube to the exterior of the reservoir, substantially as and forl the purpose specified 12. In a re extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an opening in the bottom; a tube fixed in said opening extending to adjacent the top of vthe reservoir; fusible means to close the lower end of said tube; a tube through which to discharge the liquid from the 'reservoir extending through the first tube and communicating at4 the upper end with the interior of the reservoir, the lowerI end being shut off from the exterior of the reservoir by the fusible means, and the fusing of the fusible means opening said tube to the exterior of the reservoir; and a head secured to and spaced from the lower end of the tube, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an opening in the bottom; a tube fixed in said opening to extend to adjacent the top of the reservoir; fusible means to close the lower end of said tube; a generator in which to generate gas within the reservoir having an outlet leading into the reservoir; a tube through which to discharge the liquid from the vreservoirengaging in the first tube, said fusible means also shutting off said tube from the exterior of, the res'er voir; means to connect the inner en'd of the second tube with the reservoir; and sprinkler head carried at the lower end of the second tube, substantially as and for the purpose specified. In a nre extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a lire extinguishing liquid having an opening therein; a generator in which to gene-rate gas 'within the reservoir having an outlet leading into the reservoir: a tube fixed in the opening in the reservoir extending to adjacent the top of the reservoir; fusible means to close the outer end of saidy tube; a second tube engaging inthe firsty tube connected at its inner end with the interior of the reservoir and through which to discharge the liquid from the reservoir, said fusible means shutting off said tube from the exterior of the reservoir; and a head oarried at the outer end of said latter tube, sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a' reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an opening therein; a generator to generate gas within the reservoir having an outlet leading into the reservoir; a tube fixed in the opening in the reservoir to extend to adjacent the top of the reservoir; fusible means to close the other end of the tube; a second tube slidably engaging in the first tube with its inner end extending from the rst tube through which tov discharge the liquid from the reservoir, said fusible means shutting off said second tube from the exterior of the reservoir; a head carried at the outer end of said second tube; and means to connect the inner end of said tube with the liquid in the reservoir adjacent the bottom.y

In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an opening therein; a generator to generate gas Within the reservoir having an outlet leading into the reservoir; a tube fixed in the opening in the reservoir to extend to adjacent the top of the reservoir; fusible means to close the other end of the tube; a second tube slidably engaging in the first tube with its inner end extending from the irst tube through. which to discharge the liquid from the reservoir, said fusible means shutting off said second tube from the exterior of the reservoir; a head carried at the outer end of said second tube; and a third tube to connect the inner end of the second tube with the liquid in the reservoir adjacent the bottom, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
17. In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a lire extinguishing liquid having an opening therein; a generator to generate gas Within the reservoir having an outlet leading into the reservoir; a tube fixed in the opening in the reservoir to extend to adjacent the top of the reservoir; fusible means to close the other end of the tube; a second tube slidably engaging in the first tube with its inner end extending from the first tube through Which to discharge the liquid from the reservoir, said fusible means shutting off said second tube from the ex terior of the reservoir; a head carried at the outer end of said second tube; a third tube extending from the bottom of the reservoir to adjacent the inner end of the discharge tube and connected at its lower end with the reservoir; and a tube carried by the discharge tube to embrace the third tube, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
18. In a fireextinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an opening therein; a generator in the reservoir having an outlet leading into the reservoir, said generator adapted to hold gas generating materials in a separated condition when in an upright position and permitting said materials to mix When in an inverted position; a carrier to pivotally support the generator in the reser voir; a tube fixed in the opening in the reservoir extending to adjacent the top of the reservoir; fusible means to close the outer end of said tube; a second tube engaging in the first tube through which to discharge the liquid from the reservoir, said fusible means shutting off said tube from the exterior of the reservoir; a head eonnected to the outer end of said second tube; means to connect the inner end of the second tube With the liquid in the reservoir adjacent the bottom; and means carried by the second tube to cooperate With means connected to thecarrier for the generator to maintain the generator in an upright position, the fusing of the fusible means connecting said second tube With the exterior of the reservoir and releasing the carrier for the generator to permit it With the generator to assume an inverted position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
19. In fire extinguishing apparatus, the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an outlet, said reservoir adapted to be removably connected to a fixed support; fusible means to close said outlet; a pivotally supported gas generator having an outlet leading into the reservoir and means to hold gas generating materials therein in a separated condition When in an upright position and to permit said materials to mix When the generator is inverted; and means to releasably maintain the generator in an upright positionand adapted to be released to permit the gen erator to assume an inverted position upon the fusing of the fusible closure for the reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l
20. lIn fire extinguishing apparatus, the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an outlet; fusible means to close said outlet; a pivotally supported gas generator having an outlet leading into the reservoir and means to hold gas generating materials therein in a separated condition when in an upright positionand to kpermit said materials to mix when the generator is inverted, and having means through which the generated gas is passed before it enters the reservoir to filter said gas; and means to releasably maintain the generator in an upright position, said means adapted to release the generator to permit it to assume an inverted positionu upon the fusing of the fusible closure for the reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified. In a lire extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a lire extinguishing liquid having an opening in the bottom; a gas generator in said reservoir; a liquid discharge tube supported in the reservoir in line with the opening in the reservoir to extend into the reservoir to adjacent the top; fusible means to close said tube; and means connected to said tube to permit a portion of the gas generated in the reservoir to be discharged with the liquid, sub` stantially as and flor the purpose specified.

In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liq uid having an outlet; a gas generator in said reservoir to hold gas generating materials and the reactive mixture free from the liquid in the reservoir and having an outlet leading into the reservoir; means connected to the outlet of the reservoir to pelmit a portion of the generated gas to be expelled with the liquid; and fusible means to close the reservoir outlet, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a ire extinguisher7 the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an outlet; a generator in said reservoir to normally hold gas generating materials in a separated condition; an outlet leading from the-generator into the reservoir having an outwardly opening and inwardly closing spring influenced valve; means to filter the generated gas before it is utilized to expel the liquid from the reservoir; means connected to the reservoir outlet to permit a portion of the gas to be expelled from the reservoir with the liquid; and fusible means to close the reservoir outlet; substantially as and for the purpose specified. f y

In a fire extinguisher; the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an opening; fusible means to close said opening; a generator to normally hold gas generating materials -in a separated condition having an outlet leading into the reservoir; means operable upon they fusing of the fusible means to cause the materials to mix in the generator; and a tube to cause a portion of the gas to be expelled with the liquid from the reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a fire extinguisher, the combina-- tion of a reservoir for aV fire extinguishing liquid hai/ing an opening; fusible means to close said opening; a lgenerator to hold gas generating materials in a separated condition when in upright position and permit said materials to mix when inverted and having an outlet leading into the reservoir; a liquid discharge tube for the reservoir connected with the opening therein to extend adjacent the top of the reservoir and connected with the liquid in the lowermost part of the reservoir, said tube being. shut off from the exterior of the reservoir by the fusible closure for the reservoir opening; and the fusing-of said fusible means connecting said tube with the exterior of the reservoir, and said tube and generator having means to coperate to maintain the generator in upright position when the reservoir opening is closed by the fusible means and adapted to release the generator to permit it to assume an inverted position upon the fusing of the fusible means; and a. tube extending through the discharge tube having an outlet adjacent the outlet of the discharge tube and connected with the reservoir adjacent the top to discharge a portion of the gas with the liquid from the reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir for a fire extinguishing liquid having an opening; fusible means to vclose said opening; a generator to normally hold gas generating materials in a separated condition when inl upright position and adapted to mix when inverted and haringen outlet leading into the reservoir; a liquid discharge tube for the reservoir connected with the opening therein to extend adjacent the top of the reservoir and shut off from the exterior of the reservoir by the fusible means and'having means to maintain the generator in upright position; a head connected to the discharge end of said tube; means to connect the upper end of saidtube with the liquid in the lowermost part of the reservoir; the fusing of the fusible means opening said.
ldischarge tube to the exterior of the reserextending' through the discharge tube having an outlet adjacent the head connected to the discharge tubeand connected with the reservoir adjacent the top to discharge a portion'of the gas with the liquid from the reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified. .j
In a fire extinguisher7 the combination of a reservoir for a lire extinguishing liquid having an opening; a fusible closure for said opening; a pivotally,i supported generator in said reservoir adapted tohold gas generating materials in a separated condition when in an upright position and cause said materials to mix when inverted; a liquid discharge tube for the reservoir communicating at its lower end with the opening in the reservoir and extending to adjacent the top of the reservoir, said tube shut off from the exterior of the reservoir by the fusible closure and coperating with means connected to the generator to maintain it in an upright position; a sprinkler head connected to the lower end of said tube; means to connect the upper end of the tube with the liquid in the lowermost part of the reservoir; the fusing of the fusible means opening the discharge tube to the exterior of the reservoir and 'causing said tube to release the generator to permit it to assume an inverted position and the gas generating materials to mix; and a tube extending through the discharge tube having an Outlet at one end adjacent the sprinkler head and the other end communicating with the reservoir to discharge a portion of the gas with the liquid from the reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a lire extinguisher, the combination of a reservoir having an opening in the bottom; a fusible closure for said opening a tube secured in said opening extending into the reservoir; a gas generator to create pressure in the reservoir and having an outlet leading into the reservoir; a second tube extending through the first tube to have longitudinal movement and through which to discharge the liquid from the reservoir and normally positioned Within the first tube by the fusible closure, said tube having means to cooperate with the first tube to seal the saine frein the gas in the reservoir and connect the discharge tube With the liquid in the lower part of the reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
