A TTUfl/VEYS WITNESSES Mam/bum K M following is a full, clear, and exact pensive, and
.with the type guide and strikin a UNITED STATES WILLIAM DAVID REID, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK,
TYPEWRITER ATTAcHMnNT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. REID, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Typewriter Attachment, of which the description. I
It is well appreciated that considerable diificulty is experienced in connection with typewriting machines in that the ribbon disintegrates, resulting in small particles thereof becoming lodged in-the face of the type, which causes a gradual clogging up of the spaces partially or completely inclosed by the type, as, "for instance, the letters 0, P, D, etc. i
It has been customary to provide a small hand brush with a view of permitting the typist to clean the face of the type. This results in the wasting of considerable time asidefrom soiling thehands of the operator. -It has been pro osed, with a view of eliminating this di culty, to provide a removable brush which might be associated ainst the face of such brush the type w ic has be-. come clogged. The feasibility of? this suggestion will readily be appreciated in that it is only necessary for a typist to apply the brush to the type guide and to sharply depress the keys, operating the type to be cleaned, this operation being rapid and not soiling the fingers of the typist.
This latter type of brush as placed upon the market, however, has been rather exuse, v1z., that of cleaning the face of the type.
My invention now contemplates the pro vision of a brush which may be associated with the type guide, and which is very unlikely to become accidentally removed therefrom, and by means of which the face of the type is insured of a thorough cleaning.
Further objects of my invention are the construction of a device of this nature which shall not be limited to this one purpose, and which shall be capable of construction at an extremely low figure so as to be commercially practical. a
- Reference is-had to the attached sheet of drawings which practically illustrates one Specification of Letters Patent.
-- ment;
is also only capable of one practical embodiment of my invention, and in which:
Figure 1 is a partly sectional side view through a typewriter having my improved attachment associated therewith;
Fig. 2-is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a rear face view of my attach- Fig. 4 is a sectional side view thereof, taken along lines 4t of Fig. 3, and,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a certain detail of the invention hereinafter more particularly referred to.
In all of these VIGWS like reference nu- Inerals designate similar parts, and 1 indicates the platen of a typewriter, in front of which there is positioned in the usual manner the type guide 2 formed with a slot into which keys 3 carrying the type may be projected.
I now construct my typewriter attachment so that the same' includes an eraser 4: of conventional construction ber 5. Through this shield 5 thereare formed openings 6, preferably square, openings being cut through the eraser in alinement with the openings 6, as has been clearly shown at7, of"smaller diameter than ed to inclose the bristles 8 and is retained in applied position by any suitable construction, such as for instance, tending prongs having associated, with it a finger shield and stiffening mem-.

openings formed in the body of the eraser 4.
It will now-be appreciated that the cap 10 may readily be removed from the face of the eraser 41, and that the latter may be readily associated with the type guide 2 by pushing the eraser upon such type guide so that the arms of the same project through the openings 6 and 7, the latter'giving frictional engagement with the arms of the type guide so that any danger of accidental removal of the eraser is eliminated; The keys corresponding to such type as is to be cleaned may now be depressed and the same will have any particles lodged in their faces removed by virtue of the contact be- The cap 10 may now be associated with the eraser 4 by mere depression, pressing diametrically opposite points in line with the prongs 11, so that these prongs may be inserted into their corresponding openings in the eraser 4. The eraser may now be withdrawn, or, if it is desired, maybe removed from the type guide prior to the ap plication of the cap 10, and by virtue of this ca the fingers of the typist will not be soiled and my attachment may be utilized as an eraser.
Obviously any number of modifications might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, as embodied in the scope of'the attached claims which read:
LA typewriter attachment comprising in combination, an eraser presenting a pair of side faces and bristles associated with one of the faces of such eraser, and extend ing outwardly therefrom.
2. A typewriter attachment, comprising an eraser capable of being associated with a type-guide, and means attached to said eraser for permitting of a cleansing of type, upon an actuation of the same subsequent to the association of said eraser with said type uide.
3. typewriter attachment including, in combination a member comprising a body portion adapted to be associated with the type-guide, and means attached to said body portion for permitting a cleansing of the type upon their actuation, subsequent to the attachment of the body portion with tlu type guide.
4. An eraser, comprising a body portion presenting a pair of side faces, bristles attached to one of said side faces and extending outwardly therefrom, said body portion being formed with openings through which the prongs of a type-guide may project to permit of the attachment of said eraser to a typewriter.
5. A typewriter attachment including in combination, an eraser, a shield associated with such eraser, means forming a part of such eraser for permitting an attachment, of the same to a type guide, a backing plate associated with the shield of said eraser, and bristles attached to said backing plate.
6. A typewriter attachment including in combination, an eraser, a shield associated with such eraser, means forming a part of such eraser for permitting an attachment of the same to a type guide, a backing plate associated with the shield of said eraser, bristles attached to said backing plate, and a cap adapted to envelop said bristles and being removably associated with said eraser.
7. An eraser, including a body portion formed with a plurality of openings and plates arranged upon the faces of said body portion and being also formed with a plurality of openings adapted to aline with the openings through the body portion of said 8. An eraser, including a body portion formed with openings and plates arranged upon the faces of said body portion and being also formed with openings adapted to aline with the openings through the body portion of said eraser, the openings through said plates being of a larger diameter than the openings through the body portion of the eraser.
9. In combination, an eraser including a body portion presenting a pair of side faces, bristles attached to and extending from one of said side faces, an enveloping-cap for said bristles, said cap being formed with prongs adapted to project into the openings formed in one of the side faces of said body portion.
