A. CORNU.
CLASP.
APPLICATION FILED IUNEII. 1920.

CLASP.
Application iled` .Tune 11,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AMI -CoRNU, citizen` of Switzerland, residing at La Chaux-de- Fonds, Canton of Neuchtel, inl the Confederation of Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is an unfold-` able clasp for a number of elements which are connected with one another by suitable means, so as to allow the said elements to be either placed in one line, when they are unfolded, with a view of stretching the bracelet enough to be able to be slipped over the wearers hand, or folded upon each other, when the clasp is to be closed, so as to fit exactly the wrist of its bearer.
The invention is shownin the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top-view of one construction involving the invention, the clasp being closed.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section in side View of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the un. folded clasp.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the clasp, when the elements of the same are on their way to be closed.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a longitudinal section of the clasp and Fig. 5au a face-view of the same, hinged to the loop of a wristwatch.
The clasp shown in Figs. 1 to 4 is formed of 3 members a, b, and c connected with one another, so as to be able to be unfolded and place-d end to end, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, or folded on one another as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In the first instance, the. unfolded clasp allows the bracelet to be extended sufiiciently for being slipped over the hand of its bearer, in the second instance on the contrary the bracelet lits exactly the wrist and cannot be slipped over the hand.
The middle member a is connected to the other two members b and c by means of the pivots al and a?. These pivots are respectively engaged in the hooked portion of the springs b1 and c1 fixed to the parts Z1 and c respectively by means of rivets b2 and c2 respectively. The part c is provided with a knob or button d xed to the same by means Specification of Letters-Patent.
1920. Serial No. 388,167.
of'the lsame rivet c2 mentioned before and 1s intended to be seized between two fingers for the purpose of unfolding the clasp.
The parts b and c are provided with suitable depressions b3 and c3 into which the ends of the hooked springs b1 and c1, engage whenever the fiat portion of the pivots al and a2 -are adjacent to the said springs, as shown 1n Fig. 2 with the object of holding the three parts a, b, and c in their' folded position. v
The free ends of the parts a, l) and c are hooked to the two extremities of the bracelet to which the clasp belongs.
Supposing the bracket to be fitted to the wrist of a person one needs only to seize the knob or button d between two fingers and to pull` the same'. The parts will then first be brought into the position shown in Fig. 4 and be extended to the position shown in Fig. 3 in which the bracelet may be slipped over ones wrist. In this position of the parts the flat portion of the pivots'af,1 and a2 are pressed by the springs b1 and c1 against the inner face of the parts b and c, so as to maintain the clasp in its unfolded position as shown in Fig. 3. The clasp may be shut again by moving the parts a, b and c inversely from their position of Fig. 3 first into their position of Fig. 4 and then again into their position of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 shows a modified construction of the same device, attached to a wrist-watch. This construction differs from the just described one only by its part b provided with a broad hook b4 intended to be hooked to the loop of a wrist-watch of any well known construction whatever as shown in Fig. 5a.
yThe operation of this construction is exactly the same as the one just described with reference to the Figs. 1 to 4.
The forms and `dimensions of theparts a, b and c and of the springs 'acting upon the same may vary and the number of the parts forming the unfoldable clasp may Aalso vary according to the length to be obtained for the extended bracelet.
4I claim:
1. A bracelet clasp and the like comprising pivotally connected members, and resilient devices connected to certain of the pivotally mounted members and coacting with the pivots thereof for yieldingly main- Patentea Jan. 4, 1921.`
taining the members of the clasp in both a closed and open position.
2. A bracelet clasp and the like comprising a plurality of members, pivots connecting the adjacent ends of the said members, and resilient devices coacting with the said pivots for yieldingly maintaining the said members in both anopen and closed position.
3. A bracelet clasp and the like comprising three ivotally connected members, and resilient -evices secured to predetermined members and coacting .with the pivots by which the said members are connected for yieldingly maintaining the said members in' an open and also in a closed position.
4. A bracelet clasp and the like comprising a central and two outer members, pivots connecting the ends of the central member with the adjacent ends of the outer members, predetermined portions of the .said pivots being flattened, and resilient means coacting with the said pivots and flattened portions thereof for yieldingly maintaining the parts in both an open and closed position.
5. A bracelet clasp and the like comprising a central and two outer members, pivots connecting the ends'of the central member with the adjacent ends of the outer members, lpredetermined portions of the said' pivots being flattened, and hook spring members connected respectively to the said outer members and having U-shaped hooks at their extremities adapted to enga-ge the flattened portions of the pivots when the. parts of the clasp are closed and to coact with the pivots to yieldingly maintain the flattened surfaces thereof against the adjacent inner faces of .the outer members when the parts of the clasp are in an open position.A
In testimonyT whereof I alix my signature in presence of two witnesses. AMI CORNU.
