Specification of Letters Patent.

Continuation of application Serial No. 114,404, filed August 11, 1916. This application filed May 14, 1918.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WURDAGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Operated Switches for Panel- Boards and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates generally to metering panel-boards and cabinets and, more particularly, to certain new and useful improvements in door-operated switches for panel-boards and the like. I
The objects of my present invention are to provide an efficient metering-panel switch adapted normally, on an opening of thedoor of the metering-panel cabinet, to automatically open the main circuit to the meter within the cabinet; to providea cabinet and switch of the class described with means for abnormally, on an opening of the door of the metering-panel cabinet, holding'the switch in circuit-closing position; and to improve generally upon, and simplify the construction of, switches of the type stated.
With the above and other objects in view, my presentl invention resides in certain novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
This application is a continuation of Letters Patent No. 1,269,770, issued to me June 18, 1918, as to common subject-matter.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a panel-board cabinet inclosing a panel-board equipped with a switch constructed in ac.-
cordance with and embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of thecabinet with parts broken away and in section to show the panel-board and circuitmembers,, including the switch, within the cabinet, the door of the cabinet being closed andv the switch being in circuit-closing position;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View through the cabinet and panel-board .on approximately the line 3--3, Fig. 1, the door of the cabinet being closed and the switch being in circuit-closing position;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmental view of the cabinet and'panel-board with the switch the cabinet, including suitable knife-switch or snap- terminals 6, 7, and 8, which are electrically connected, through main fuse plugs 9, 10, and 11, with the main or service lines 12, 13, and 14 of the three-wire system of distribution here shown, leading into the cabinet. Pivoted electrically upon the panelboard 5 adjacent the terminals 6, 7, and 8, is a knife-switch hereinafter more fully described and which includes an insulation bar 15 having fixed thereto suitable blades 16,
17, and 18 adapted, when the switch is in circuit-closing position, to engage electrically with the several terminals 6, 7, and 8, the blades 16 and 18 communicating electrically through the meter 19 with the several lamp or other distributing circuits and the blade 17 being electrically connected with the return neutral wire or bus-bar of such circuits, all as in my saidLetters Patent No. 1,269,770 more fully described. It will be evident that, when the switch is in open position or in the" position thereof illustrated in Fig. 5, the circuit to the meter 19 from the main leads, and consequently also from the meter 19 to the several lamp or other distributing circuits included in the system, is also open or' broken, and that when the switch is in closed position or in the position thereof illustrated in Figs; 2, 3, and 4, the circuit to and from the meter 19 is likewise closed.
Upstanding from the panel-board 5 adjacent the said switch, is a rigid wall comprising spaced portions 2020. Fixed to the wall-sections or portions 20, and bridging or spanning the space therebetween, is a rigid section 21 preferably of suitable insulation material, slotted transversely to accommodate a link 22 ivotally connected at one end to the bight o a yoke member 23 having its the several parts of the switch and its oper- I ating and locking members maybe made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my inventlon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An electric switch comprising, in combination with a panel, a fixed support on the panel, a switch-bar pivoted for movement upon the panel, a link having pivotal connection at one end with the bar, a second link having pivotal connection at one end with the support and at its other end with the other end of the first link, and a spring coiled on the support and having engagement with the support and the second link for holding the bar yieldingly in circuitopening position.
. 2. An electric switch comprising, in com bination with a fixed slotted support and a rod fixed on the support, a bar, a link having pivotal connection at one end with the bar and working in the slot of the support, a second link having pivotal connection at one end with the rod and at its other end with the other end of the first link, and a spring coiled on the rod and having engagement with the support and the second link for holding the bar yieldingly in circuitopening position.
3. The combination with an inclosing cabinet, of an electric circuit knife-switch pivotally mounted within the cabinet, means including a spring engaging the switch for normally holding the same yieldingly in circuit-opening position, and means including a meinber mounted for movement on the cabinet and relatively to the switch adapted for engagement with the switch when the same is in circuit-closing position to hold the switch against the tension of the spring in circuit-closing position.
4. The combination with an inclosing cabinet, of an electric circuit knife-switch pivotally mounted within the cabinet, means including 'a spring engaging the switch for normally holding the same in circuit-opening position, and means including a yieldingly held member mounted for pivotal movement on the cabinet and swingable relatively to the switch adapted for engagement with the switch when the same is in circuit-closing position to hold the switch against the tension of the spring in circuit- ClOSiI lF position.
5. he combination with an inclosing cabinet and a fixed switch support mounted within the cabinet, of an electric circuit knife-switch bar disposed for movement within the cabinet, a link having pivotal connection at one end with the bar, a second link having pivotal connection at one end with the support and at its other end with the other end of the first link, a spring having engagement with the support and one of the links for holding the bar yieldingly in circuit-opening position, and means including a yieldingly held member mounted for pivotal movement on the cabinet and swingable relatively to the bar adapted for engagement with one of the links when the bar is in circuit-closing position to hold the same in such position against the tension of the spring.
6. The-combination with an inclosing cabinet having an aperture and a door upon the cabinet for ClOSiIlg said aperture, of an electric circuit knife-switch pivotally mounted within the cabinet, means including a spring engaging the switch for normally holding the switch yieldingly in circuit-opening position, means on the door adapted for engagement with the switch to hold the same against the .tension of said spring in circuitclosing position when the door is closed, and means on the cabinet adapted for engagement with the switch to hold the same against the tension of said spring in circuit-closing position when the door is open.
7. The combination with an inclosing cabinet having an aperture, a door mounted for movement upon the cabinet for closing said aperture, and a fixed switch-support within the cabinet, of an electric circuit knife switch bar disposed for movement within the cabinet, a link having pivotal connection with the bar, a second link having pivotal connection with the support and with the first link, a spring having engagement with one of the links for normally holding the bar yieldingly in circuit-opening position, means on the door adapted for engagement with one of said links to hold the bar against the tension of the spring in circuit-closing position when the door is closed, and means on the cabinet adapted for engagement with the other of said links to hold the bar against the tension of the spring in circuit-closing position when the door is open.
