Be it known that we, DAVID L. LINDQUIST, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing in Hartsdale, county of Westchester, and State of New York, and DAVID C. LARSON, a citizen of the. United States, and residing in Yonkers, county of Westchester, State of New York, have invented 'a new and useful Improvement in Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an electro-magnetic blow out for electrical switch apparatus more particularly of the electro-magnetically operated type used in the control of electric elevators.
The object of the invention is to provide an electro-magnetic blow out for switch apparatus of the above noted type, involving certain improved structural details and arrangement of parts, which tend toward simplicity and compactness, and provide on the whole a blow out for a switch apparatus which is durable but involves only small cost for manufacture, and in which adjustment of the various parts may readily be made from the front side of a controller board.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational view of an electro-magnetic switch constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 illus- *trates a front view of Fig. 1 with certain portions broken away; Fig. 3 illustrates in plan view a certain portion of Fig. 1, and Figs; 4 and 5 illustrate a front and side elevation respectively of a modified construction.
The switch apparatus is shown as comprising a switch arm, S, carrying contacts 5, 5, and electro-magnetic means comprising a winding, 7, to actuate the switch arm to close the contacts 5, 5', against a pair of fixed contacts 12, 12' carried in a holder, 14, supported in a bracket, 16, having a stem, 17, extended to the back side of a slate 3.
Means for, magnetically extinguishing an existing arc between the top contacts 5, 5 and the contacts 12, 12' comprise two magnet windings 20, 20, supported on the front side of the slate, by a bushed rod 21, the latter being supported at the ends by a pair of brackets 22, bolted to the slate. It will be noted here that the brackets 16 are conformed to provide for the positioning of the windings 20, 20' on substantially the same Specification of Letters Patent.

center lines using both vertically and horiizontally, as those of the fixed contacts 12, 12 as viewed from the front side of the slate, or in other words, the contact supporting brackets 16 are constructed to accommodate the blow out windings.
Arms such as 23 form paths to direct the magnetic flux exerted by the windings 20, 20 to the points of possible arcing, these arms being pivotally supported on the rod 21, and carrying at their outer ends the usual arc deflectors 24. The arms 23 are sustained in a horizontal or outstanding position as indicated in the drawings by means of a rearwardly projecting lug 25, which is seated by the slate. 4
These arms may, however, be swung upwardly or in a clockwise direction on their pivot 21, thus allowing access to the contact mechanism for adjustment purposes or otherwise, without interference by the said arms.
The bottom contact 6 is adapted el'ectri cally'to engage a fixed contact 6 contained in a holder 26, which is capable of adjustment in the same manner as the holders 14.
Means acting in the capacity of a hold down coil for the purpose of effecting firm electrical engagement. between the bottom contacts 6, 6', comprises a small winding 27,
retained on a core 28 having a stem 29 riveted to the depending arm forming a part of the bracket 1. An armature 30 for this magvnet is supported on the pintle 4 with the switch arm, the lower end thereof being adjustably connected by a connection 31 to the switch arm. By means of the adjustable connection 31, the air gap for the armature 30 may be maintained constant, as the contacts 6, 6 become worn.
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate in different views a modified arrangement of the blow out means for extinguishing an existing arc, it consisting in the use of only a single blowout coil 32, disposed between the top contacts on the switch arm at the point of possible arcing. This coil is secured between a pair of members 33, 33, by screws 34, engaging a core 35. The members 33, 33' are hinged at 36 to a pair of brackets 37 secured to the slate 1. Fingers 38 formed by the brackets, engage the lateral faces of the members 33, 33' when in normal position as indicated in the drawing, to steady the same.
With this arrangement it will be seen that the members 33, 33 may be swung upwardly out of an interfering position With the switch contact mechanism.
