Description
CLOTHES 'HANGER.

WITNESS I INVENTOH ATTORNEYS OTTO E. UECKER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
CLOTHES-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 15121.
Application filed January 20, 1919. Serial No. 272,144.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes hangers for suspending towels, cloths or the corners of blankets and other large pieces, and more particularly to that type adapted to exert a frictional wedge grip on the article held.
It is in general the object of my invention to provide an efiicient and readily manipulated device of this character which will lend itself to most economical manufacture.
A further and important object resides in the provision in a device of this character of an arrangement whereby the weight or stress exerted by an article inserted in the device, serves to increase the gripping action of the jaws of the hanger to prevent acci dental detachment of the article held.
A still further object resides in the provision of a hanger device embodying the above features and which may be readily formed of a single length of resilient wirc.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and defined by the appended claim.
In the drawing the figure shows an elevational View of a clothes hanger embodying my invention.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, I have shown a hanger constituting one embodiment of my invention and formed of a single length of resilient wire. This length of wire is bent at points adjacent its center to form a throat closing portion 5, from the ends of which connecting stretches 6 extend toward each other and divergently with respect to the throat closing portion 5, the end of these connecting stretches being merged into the ends of jaw stretches 7 which extend transversely of the throat closing portion 5 and which define a throat for receiving the article to be held, these jaw stretches being arcnately divergent from the throat closing portion 5 whereby the restricted end of the throat is disposed adjacent said portion 5 and at their ends remote from the restricted portion of the throat the jaw stretches are spaced apart a suflicient distance to permit free insertion of any article to be held in the throat.
From these end portions of the jaw stretches, the ends 8 of the wire are directed together and terminate in interlocked eyes 9, one of which is relatively large for engagement with the eye 10 of a suspension screw or with any other suspension member.
An exceedingly simple and readily formed device has thus been provided which will eflicently hold clothing or other articles in such manner that the gripping action is increased upon increase of stress tending to displace the article in the direction of the closed portion of the throat. This action is effected by enga ement of the article against the throat c osing wire portion 5, pressure exerted thereon obviously tending to draw the jaw stretches 7 together to in crease the clamping action.
By bending the throat closing stretch 5 of the wire in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the jaw portions 7, said jaw portions may be adjusted toward and away from each other for efiicient gripping action on various thicknesses of cloth which it is desired to hold thereby.
What is claimed is:
A hanger of the class described formed of a single length of wire bent to provide an intermediate stretch, return portions bent at the ends of said intermediate stretch to form relatively large loops, jaw stretches extending divergently from said return portions and crossing the central portion of the intermediate stretch, the said loops be ing elongated transversely of the jaw portions to increase resiliency of the latter, connecting suspension portions at the ends of the gripping portions of the jaw stretches, an eye formed on the free end of one suspension portion and slidably receiving the free end of the other, and an eye formed on the said operating to draw said gripping portions other suspension portion and loosely emtogether. bracing the first mentioned eye whereby the In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 10 jaw stretches may have freedom of movehave hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in ment, pressure exerted against the interme the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisdiate stretch by an article disposed between consin.
the gripping portions of the jaw stretches OTTO E. UECKER.
