Description

UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM E GLASS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH HIS RIGHT TO THOS. D. OOTTRELL AND WM. L. B. HUGHES, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENT-BUNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,415, datul March 4, 1533.
To allwhomi t. may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. CLASS, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Fermentation and Vent Bung, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to a vent-bung so constructed that it is used first as a fermentation-bung, it being provided with a removable cup for holding water over the vent, through which, during fermentation, the carbonic-acid gas is seen to bubble up and escape, which, when the bubbling ceases, indicates that fermentation is done; then by removing the cup the bung is reversed end for end in the bang hole, and then becomes a venting bun g.
The following is a description of its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
A represents a wooden bung, made tapering from the middle to each end so that either end may be inserted in the bung-hole of a barrel. Through the bung A is a hole, B. Over one end of the bung, which is made slightly the position as seen in the drawing, with the cup uppermost, the cup is filled with water, and is left thus during fermentation. WVhen fermentation ceases, which will be observed by the cessation of the bubbes through the water, the cup is removed from the bung, the bung withdrawn, and then becomes a ventingbung for drawing off the liquor from the barre]. The tension of the rubber is sufficient to keep the vent closed, except when liquor is being drawn.
I claim- The bung A, rubber strip 0, and thimble or cup D, when constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses: WILLIAM F. CLASS.
