Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BRYoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Closers and Checks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relatesto improvements in regulating devices to be applied more particularly to that type of door check and closer employing a spring, closing means and a liquid checking mechanism by which the closing movements of the door or the like are controlled.
The invention is particularly useful in its application to a door checking mechanism which provides for an initial or primary cushion during the swinging of the door from an open position to a point prior to its being latched, and a second positive cushion which becomes operative to retard the closing of the door when the same nearly reaches the latching position, to prevent slamming or banging of the door and thus obviate the jars, shocks and excessive noise incident to the closing of the door.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improvement in devices of this character by which the second positive cushion is gradually brought into play and can be accurately and minutely regulated in a positive manner without affecting the operation of the first or primary cushion in the slightest degree as to its speed or effective action.
Another object is to provide a structure by means of which each positive cushion will be active at the proper time and distance of the door with respect to its approach to a latching position.
Another object is to provide a regulating device which will adjust the door check to operate properly under varying drafts and changes in the atmospheric conditions.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjusting means which is particularly adapted for use in connection with a concealed door closer and check, the checking mechanism comprising that type which includes a piston having operative connections with a spindle or shaft in turn having operative connections with the door or similar swinging element, the piston and its associated crank rod by which it is connected to the crank shaft having cooperative means to automatically control or regulate the flow of the liquid through a valved passageway during its movements.
Another object is to provide means whereby the regulating device may be made operative in connection with a door supported on pivots at its upper and lower edges or in which the casing of the door closer and check forms a support therefor, or when the door is supported to swing on hinges, a special advantage of the device being that the adjustment of the positive cushion can be readily effected while the door is either in a closed or nearly closed position.
Vith the above and other objects in View. the invention will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and described, consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts particularly referred to in the specification and claims it being also an object of the invention to provide a device which is simple in construction, durable and eiiicient, and not likely to get out of working order.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, similar characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 10 is a doorframe having the usual butt or shoulder 1l, 12 is the flooring and 13 a door adapted to swing in the frame and mounted on pivots at its top (not shown) and bottom edges near the inner edge 14 of the door. The device is adapted for application to a right or left hand door. Mounted in or suspended from the fioor through the medium of a suitable casing including a floor-plate 14 supported in an aperture in the flooring, is a door closer and check which is preferably of that type employing a spring or springs as a closing means, and a liquid checking mechanism by which the closing movements of the door or the like, can be regulated. In its preferred embodiment, this device includes a casting or casing 15 having provision for suspending it from or attaching it to an angle bracket 16 suitably suspended from the floor support. rIhe casing is preferably made in the form of an integral casting having a chamber 17 for accommodating a closing means such as a spring 18, the ends of the spring being connectedy to the casing and to a shaft 19 respectively, the shaft is in turn geared as shown at 2O to a spindle or post 21 of the mechanism constituting the checking device contained within a chamber' 22 preferably formed in horizontal alinement with the chamber 17, and both having circular portions as illustrated. rlhe spring 18 is normally unwound when the door is in a closed position but is wound and its tension increased when the door is opened, so that the spring will exert tension to swing or move the door to a closed position as is usual in devices of this character. The chamber 22 is formed as an integral part of the casing in horizontal alinement with the chamber 17 but separated or made non-communicative with re spect thereto by an intermediate wall 23 projecting from the chamber 22 and continuous thereto is a cylinder 24 the open end of which is closed, and made air-tight by a removable cap 25. The spindle, post or shaft 21 is provided with a crank 26 adapted to freely swing in the chamber 22, which latter is adapted to contain oil or other liquid or fluid which cooperate to produce a cushioning device as will be hereinafter more clearly pointed out. Connected to the crank 26 is a connecting rod or link 27 which in turn has pivotal connections in the hollow end of a sliding piston 28 operating in the cylinder 24 having a passageway 29 through the central portion thereof and an auxiliary passage 30 therethrough at one side of the center, there being a valve 31 which prevents the passage of the liquid or fluid through the piston when the latter is moving to the left in Fig. 6 of the drawing, or on its forward stroke, and when the door is being moved or swung to a closed position. The valve 31 is adapted to permit the escape of fluid through the passageway 30 when the piston is on its inward stroke, the liquid passing from the chamber 22 into the cylindrical portion or cylinder 24, while the valve prevents the flow of the liquid in the reverse direction when the piston is on its outward stroke. A valve 32 is provided for controlling the flow of liquid through the passageway 29, said valve preferably having a conical head cooperating with a tapered valve seat at the forward portion of the piston, and an enlarged head at its inner end preventing its displacement in a direction opposite to the direction of seating of the valve. The valve 32, however, is adapted to be unseated by means of the adjacent oscillatory end of the link or rod 27 which is provided with a pair of spaced cam surfaces 33 between which an intermediate recess is provided to accommodate the adjacent end of the valve stem to permit the latter to seat. During the oscillation of the crank, one of the cams 38 will. be brought into engagement with the valve stem to unseat the valve 32 during the initial forward movement of the piston when the door is swung under the action of the closing means from an open te a closed position.
A iexible cushion is provided during the initial swinging of the door and the movement of the piston by means of one of the cams holding the valve 32 unseated, depending upon whetherthe check is attached to a right or left hand door. The initial or primary cushion during the irst closing is set and regulated when the device is constructed and is such that the proper egress and ingress may be had with respect to a doorway while at the same time clearing the door. lVhen the piston has moved to such a position that the valve 32 is released from the cam 33, as when the door is swinging to a closed position and the crank and connecting rod have begun to move, the valves 3l and 32 will automatically seat and thereby prevent the further escape of liquid or air through or by the piston from the cylinder 24- to the cushion 22, thus producing a second or positive cushion in front of the piston which may be set to take effect when the door reaches a position within about two inches from the latching point or at any othervdesired or predetermined time. At this time, the valve 32 will be practically closed and thus the aperture or passageway which it controls, in such a manner as to restrict the escape of the liquid therethrough so that the remaining liquid in the cushion end of the chamber will afford the proper checking resistance to insure the door moving to its latching point readily, but without undue noise or jar, the escape of liquid between the piston and cylinder and such as might take place through the valves, being such that a proper checking or cushioning action will be effected during the final movement of the door to a latching position. A projection 33 may be provided between the cams 33 so that after the second or positive cushion has taken effect to check the closing of the door, the valve 32 will be again unseated so as to release the pressure in front of the piston and thus break the cushion produced to permit the door to close more freely and certainly.
It is for the purpose of regulating the second or positive cushion that the present invention relates, and it is the object of the invention to hold the positive cushion absolutely under control to the smallest fraction of an inch, without being affected by the drafts due to atmospheric changes that may take place, owing to the small body of liquid -or fluid acted on by the piston during the time that the positive cushion is operative. In the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing the lower corner or edge of the door at the pivoted portion thereof is recessed as shown at 34 to make provision for a bracket 35, the same being in the form of a right angle or L-shaped member having a vertical arm 36 and a horizontal arm 37 suitably secured respectively to the vertical and horizontal bottom edges of the door. rThe bracket proper is in the form of a rectangular open frame which fits in the door and is protected or inclosed on either side by a casing or plate 38 suitably secured to the door. rFhe door closer and check has its spindle 21 projecting' upwardly through the top portion 39 thereof in any well known air-tight manner, while rotatably mounted thereon is a ratchet gear or wheel 40 having the usual hollow sleeve extending downwardly and coupling the operating mechanism for actuation of the door in the usual manner, and with which cooperates a double acting pawl 41 in turn pivoted as shown at 42 to an arm 43 removably clamped on the squared upper end of the spindle or post 21. The spindle or post 21 projects upwardly through the floor plate 14, which is provided wtih a circular depression 44 between which and the adjacent circularly formed portion of the frame 35, as shown at 45, intermediate antifriction bearings 46 are provided, including a flanged element or ring 47 engaging an annular recess 48 in the bottom of the circular portion 45, which latter is provided with a circular vertical aperture as shown. Means are provided in the frame 35 for turning the spindle or post 21 independent of the door and without swinging the latter, and in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, said means comprise a cylindrical member including a bottom section 44 which is adapted to freely turn in the aperture of the portion 45 of the bottom of the frame or bracket while being held or limited in its downward displacement with respect thereto, in a manner to receive the upper end of the squared post so that the two will be locked together against independent rotation. A pivot pin 50 is carried by the top portion of the frame 35 and serves to rotatably support the upper section 51 of said cylindrical member which rests upon the lower section thereof, while the latter is bored out at its upper end so that the pivot serves by engagement therewith, to keep said parts in alinement while freely rotatable thereon. The co-acting ends of sections 44 and 51 are shouldered as shown at 52 so as to interlock and the section 51 is formed near its upper end with a circumferential worm gear 53 engaged by a worm shaft 54 in turn rotatably carried by the frame and held against transverse movement therein but provided with means such as a slotted head for engagement by screwdriver or the like, whereby the worm shaft can be rotated in order to turn the post of the door closer and check, whereby the 'latter can be adjusted to various limits of movements such as indicated diagrammatically by the dotted lines in Fig. 6 of the drawings, so as to limit the stroke of the piston and thus the oscillation of the crank and connecting rod dependent upon the arc swung by the door and the distance of the door from a latching or closed position, at which the positive cushion is adapted to take effect. The minuteness of this adjustment can be readily seen by reason of the variance in the lengths of the arcs swung by the door and the post Thus, by adjusting the post independent of the door, the piston may be set so that the valve 32 will close and the positive chamber cushion will take effect upon any desired or predetermined position of the door with respect to its latching or closed position, it being understood that the sooner that the positive cushion takes effect, the greater the arc traversed during the time that said positive cushion is effective.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings, the door is swung on hinges 56 and the arm 43 is provided with a cylindrical portion 57 secured to or formed integral with the inner portion thereof and split correspondingly with the arm 43 at the attached portion thereof as shown in dotted lines Fig. 4 of the drawings and in solid lines in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Fitted to turn on the cylindrical portion of the arm 43, is an adjusting wheel or plate 58, the same having a circular bottom recess fitting the portion 57 and being formed as a bottom flange on a cylindrical post or spindle extension 59 having a squared upper` end for connection with 'the door. This connection is effected through the medium of a socketed arm 60 having connection with the door at the bottom edge thereof as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and extending at an angle so as to secure positive alinement of the hinge butts or pintles and the post or spindle of the door closer and check.
In the general organization it will be seen that the arm 43 has a pivotal connection 42 with the ratchet member 40, while the pawl 4l constitutes a locking means be-i tween the ratchet member' or wheel 4() and the arm 43, and the elements 62 and 64 constitute a looking means between the arm 43 and the pivotal part 58.
Means are provided to adjustably connect the wheel or plate 58 and the arm 43, so that the latter may be adjusted independently of the former for the purposes heretofore set forth in connection with the structure illustrated in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings and as an illustration thereof, the peripheral edge of said wheel or plate may be provided with a plurality of spaced recesses 6l of any suitable form adapted to be engaged by a pin or stop member carried by the arm, said stop member as illustrated being in the form of a pivoted latch 62 having a projection 63 to engage said recesses, while pivoted to the arm is a keeper 64 which when elevated is adaptedto permit the latch to swing' outward on its horizontal pivot carried by the arm, in order to disengage the proj ection from the recesses, but adapted to hold said projection in engagement with said recesses when lowered or swung in rear of the latch and behind a keeper 65 also projecting from the arm spaced apart from the pivot support of the keeper upon opposite sides of the latch 62. By disengaging the latch, the arm 43 may be turned independent of the plate 58 and the door to adjust the spindle or post 21 and the piston for the purpose of regulating the positive chamber cushion as above specified.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings, the post or spindle extension 59 is split as shown at 66 and the arm connection or bracket 60 is provided with a threaded. aperture receiving a spreaderplug or wedge 67, the lower tapered en d of which engages the split portion of the post eXtension so as to take up wear between the parts and thereby form a positive connection to prevent one part turning independently of the other.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings, the section 49 is split at its lower end as shown at 68, the opposed portions thus provided having horizontally lined apertures including a threaded portion 69 and a smooth portion 70, there being a connector in the form of a screw 71 engaged at its threaded. end in the threaded apertures 69 and loosein the aperture 70, so that by rotatingV the screw, the opposed split portions may be brought together for tightening the same on the spindle or post 21, while permitting the same -to freely turn in the aperture of the section 45 at the bottom of the frame 34.
From the foregoing description in connection with theaccompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very efficient and simple form of adjusting or regulating device in connection with a door closer and check of the nature described, by which the closing of the door canr be effectively regulated so that all jar and noise due to slamming or closing of the door with undue force and impact, is avoided. By door closer and check of the nature described, is meant devices of this general character having one or more or a plurality of cushions.
It is also to be understood that restriction is not had to a particular structure of the door closer and check, so long as the same is provided with one or more, or a plurality of cushions, produced by the valved passageway or in other similar ways that will produce the operation as described. The device is also adapted for closers and checks in which the closing means, such as a spring and the checking mechanism, including the liquid or air, are located in the same or different chambers without interfering with the effective action of the primary cushion.
lVith respect to the adjustment of the initial or primary cushion, which is set or regi'llated when the device is constructed, this is done when the cams and valves are made and they are so constructed that just that quantity of liquid can escape through the openings in the piston, while the cam is holding the valve from becoming seated, as will permit the proper egress and ingress to be had with respect to the doorway.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of' the United States, is
l. In combination with a door check having` a checking mechanism including a. spindle and a piston operatively connected thereto-and operative to provide a plurality of cushions during its forward movement in operation of the door; of means of adjustably connecting the check to the door and having means adjustably carried by the post or spindle for regulating one of the plurality of cushions, said adjustable connecting means having movable means attached to the spindle and being connected to the door.
2. In'combination with a door check having a checking mechanism including a spindle and a piston having connection therewith, said piston having coperating mea-ns to produce a plurality of cushions during the forward movement thereof and closing movement of the door; of means adjustably mounted on the spindle and having connection to the door, said adjustable means having means of controlling the position of the spindle for the purpose of controlling the traveling dist-ance of the piston at or near the finish of its stroke and thereby control the time and speed of one of the plurality of cushions independent of any perceptible effect on the first cushion.
3, In a device of the class described, a. casing provided with a liquid chamber and with a spring contained chamber separated by a solid partition dividing the mechanisms thereof, both of said chambers being situated on the same horizontal plane and the liquid chamber being provided with a piston therein, means for operating the piston, there being a passageway communicating with the chamber at opposite sides of the piston, means including an oscillating device movable with the piston for automatically controlling the how of liquid through the passageway, and means including a multiple-part connection mounted on the operating member of the piston, for adjustably connecting the check to a door and adjusting the stroke of the piston, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a device of the class described, a casing, a piston therein, a shaft, connections between the shaft and the piston, a valve in the piston operated by the connecting means, a gear connected to the shaft, a second shaft, a spring for operating the same, a gear connected thereto and having` operative connection with the first named gear, and means in the form of an adjustable multi-part connection between one of the shafts and a door to be operated for adjusting the stroke of the piston for the purposes specified.
5. ',Ihe combination with a door closer and checking device having two independent cushions effective during the movement of the door, said device provided with means for connecting the same to the floor, one of said cushions being a primary cushion operative during the initial closing of the door and the other cushion being a positive cushion effective prior to the latching thereof, of means including a multiple-part connection between the check and door for regulating the time of activity of the positive cushion whereby the latter will be operated at any desired point during the closing of the door.
6. A door check comprising a liquid chamber, a piston in said chamber, means for operating the piston, a passageway communicating with the chamber at opposite sides of the piston, means including an oscillating device movable lwith the piston late the stroke of the piston and control the timing of the closing of the passageway.
r. The combination with a door closer and check including a closing means and a checking mechanism, said checking mechanism including a chamber, a piston in said chamber, a post in the chamber having a crank connection with the piston, a valved passageway through the piston, the valve of which is adapted to be unseated by said connection during the forward movement of the piston when the door is swinging to a closed position whereby an initial cushion is y provided but to permit said valve to close thereafter to produce a second cushion when the door is approaching the latching position and an adjustable three part connection between said post and the door to adjust the stroke of the piston and the length of the positive cushion through the medium of the post and crank and independent of the door.
8. The combination with a concealed door closer and check including` a closing means and a checking` mechanism said checking mechanism including a chamber having a cylindrical portion, a piston in said cylindrical portion, a post in the chamber having a crank connection with the piston, a passageway through the piston, a valve therein adapted to unseat towardthe outer face thereof during the forward movement of the piston whereby a primary cushion is provided but adapted to permit said valve to close thereafter whereby the fluid in front of the piston will be compressed to produce a positive cushion effective when the door approaches a point in close proximity to a latching position, operative connections between the closing means and checking mechanism andmeans to connect said post to a door adjacent to the hinged edge of the latter, said means including manually adjustable rotatable means for turning the post independently of the door to regulate the degree of turn of the post andthus to regulate the stroke of the piston.
9. The combination with a door closer and check having a plurality of cushions effective during the movement of the door, said door closer and check having provision for connection with a door; of means associated with said connection for permitting the adjustment of one of said cushions whereby to regulate the length of duration thereof and the time atwhich it goes into play.
10. The combination with a door closer and checkhaving a plurality of cushions leffective during the movement of the door,
vconnection therewith; of means for adjusting the effective action of the cushionsactive after the action of the primary cushion,
through the post, and without affecting thestrength of the latter cushion.
11. The combination with a door closer and check having a plurality of cushions effective during the movement of the door,
said door closer and check having provision for connection with a door and provided with a piston, a post and a connection therebetween; of means operative through the post for adjusting the effective action of the cushions active after the action of the primary cushion to increase or decrease the resistance offered to the closing movement of the door near the. latching point.v
12. In a door closer and check, the combination with a closing means and a checking mechanism, constituting a cushioning means, and a post; of a notched member, means to detachably couple the same with a door, and means to engage the notched member to couple the latter with the post, said means being designed to be disengaged to permit turning ofthe post independently rof the door, to adjust the length of the stroke of the piston for the'purpose set forth.
13. The combination with a movable part and a cushioning device having a plurality of cushions, and including a piston, a cylinder in which said piston works, and a connecting member between the cushioning device and movable part; of means operative through .the connecting member whereby thelength and time of effective action of the last ofusaid cushions may be varied at will .independently of the movable part.
14. .In combination with a door check and closer provided with a casing having a spring chamber and a liquid chamber, a spring in the spring chamber, a piston in the liquid chamber, a shaft connected to the piston, a ratchet member fitted on the shaft,l
a fsleeve having an arm mountedon said shaft, said arm having pivotal connection with said member, and locking means between the ratchet wheel and the arm, and
' lockingA means between `the arm and the pivotal part carried on the top and bottom of thearm to adjustably connect the arm andiratchet member, and the arm and pivotal member which connects to the door.
15. Thecombination with a movable part and a cushioning deviceihaving a plurality of cushions, including a piston, a cylinder in which said piston works, and a connecting member .between the .cushioning device and movable part; of means operative through the connecting. member whereby the cluding a casing having a liquid chamber and cushion, a spring operated shaft, a crank shaft, connections between the two shafts, a piston, a plurality of valves in said piston, a rod pivotally connecting the crank shaft andthe piston, means for automatically controlling one of the valves by said rod, in connection with an adjustable connection between a door to be operated and the shaft, said connection including an auX- iliary part fixed to the upper end of the post or shaft as and for the. purposesspecified.
17. In combination with a door check and closer, having a cylindrical chamber, apiston in said chamber, a shaft connected to the piston, an arm secured to the shaft, said arm being pivotally connected to aniadjustable rigidly attached member and being provided with means of locking together the shaft and the rigidly attached pivotal member whereby the rigidly attached pivotal member, the arm and the shaft will rotate together uniformly.
18. In combination with a door 'check and closer, comprising a-casing having a cylindrical chamber, a piston in said chamber, a shaft connected to the piston, said shaft having a sleeve mounted thereon, said sleeve being provided with a pivotally connected member, said pivotally connected member having suitable means of being rigidly securedl to the sleeve whereby the said shaft, sleeve, andthe pivotally connected member will rotate together for the purposeset forth and described.
19. In combination with a door check and closer provided with a cylindrical chamber, a piston in said chamber, a shaft connected to the piston in said chamber, said shaft having a sleeve having an varm mounted thereon, said sleeve being provided with a locking device and being pivotally connected to a rigidly secured member whereby said arm and sleeve will rotate the shaft forthe purpose'set forth and described.
20. In combination with a door check and closer provided with a casing having a spring chamber and a liquid chamber, a spring in the spring chamber, a piston in the liquid chamber, a shaft connected to the piston, a sleeve-like ratchet wheel loosely fitted on the shaft, a sleeve having an arm mounted on said shaft, said arm beingprovided with means to lock said ratchet wheel,
a rigidly attached member, said arm having pivotal connection with saidmember, and being. provided with means of locking to- O'ether the rigidly attached member, shaft,
' will rotate together.
21. In combination with a door check and closer, comprising a casing having a cylindrical chamber, a piston therein, a shaft connected to the piston, an arm secured to the shaft, said arm being pivotally connected to an adjustably rigidly attached member, said arm being provided with suitable means of locking together or unlocking said rigidly attached pivotal member, whereby the arm and the shaft may be rotated without disturbing or independently of the rigidly attached member.
22. In combination with a door check and closer, comprising a casing having-a spring chamber and a liquid chamber, a spring in said spring chamber, and a piston in said liquid chamber, a shaft connected to the piston, a ratchet wheel having a hollow sleeve loosely fitted on and around the upper or outward end of the shaft, and an arm mounted on said shaft, said arm being provided with means of locking the shaft against turning independently thereof while permitting said parts to turn together.
23. A regulating device for adjustably connecting an adjustable supporting member and a pivotally moving part comprising in its mechanism, a plurality of members consisting of a bracket-like arm adjustably and rigidly mounted on a supporting member, a member pivotally connected to said arm, said arm being provided with locking and unlocking means whereby the arm, the pivotal member and .the supporting rigidly attached member and pivotally moving part may be rotated together` when locked.
24. A regulating device comprising in its construction, a plurality of members, a bracket adjustably and rigidly attached to a supporting member, a pivotal member associated with said bracket, said pivotal member being provided in its construction with means to engage another member, said bracket and pivotal member being provided with coperative locking means whereby the bracket, the pivotal member and the supporting member will rotate together.

In combination with a door check and closer comprising a casing having a spring chamber and a liquid chamber, a post in one of the chambers, a spring fitted in the spring chamber, a ratchet wheel having a hollow sleeve, loosely fitted on and around the upper or outward end of the post, an arm mounted on said post, said arm being provided with means of locking the post and the ratchet wheel against turning independently thereof while permitting sai'd parts to turn together, and means to effect a connection or disconnection between the arm and post, and the door, whereby the door may be swung independently of the post and spring and locked in adjusted position.

In combination with a door check and closer comprising a casing having a spring chamber and a liquid chamber, posts in said chambers, a spring fitted in the spring chamber, gears connecting the posts, a ratchet wheel having a hollow sleeve loosely fitted on and around the upper end of the post, an arm mounted on said post, said arm being provided with means for locking the post and the ratchet wheel against turning independently thereof while permitting said parts to turn together, and adjustable locking means between the door and post to effect a connection or disconnection between the arm and post, and the door, whereby the door may be swung independently of the post and spring and locked in adjusted position.
27. In combination with a door check and closer comprising a casing having a spring chamber and a liquid chamber, a post in each chamber, a spring fitted in the spring chamber, operative connections between the posts, a ratchet wheel fiXedly attachable to the operative connections at one post and having a hollow sleeve removably engaging a. gear for causing movement thereof in unison, an arm mounted on one of said posts, said arm being provided with means of locking together the post and the ratchet wheel so as to hold the same against independent turning while permitting said parts to turn together.
28. In a door check and closer, the combination of a checking mechanism having spring actuated means; of means for connecting said spring'actuated means with a door or disconnecting the same, said means comprising a shaft, a ratchet wheel associated with the shaft and a multiple-part adjustable connection between the door and thc ratchet.
29. In a door check and closer having a spring actuated closing mechanism and a chamber with a piston therein, and means coperating with the piston to produce a plurality of cushions during the forward stroke thereof; and means for connecting said spring actuating means with a door or disconnecting the same, said means comprising a shaft, a ratchet wheel associated with the shaft, a bracket associated with or rigidly secured to the door, a sleeve fixed to turn with the shaft and means to connectY the sleeve and bracket.
30. In a door check and closer having a spring actuated closing mechanism and a chamber with a piston therein, and means coperating with the piston to produce a plurality of cushions during the forward stroke thereof; and means for connecting said spring actuating means with a door or disconnecting thelsame, said means comprising a shaft, a ratchet wheel associated with the shaft, a bracket rigidly secured to the door, an adjustable sleeve removably mounted on the shaft to rotate therewith and means to connect the sleeve and bracket.
31. In a device for accurately connecting the post of a door check and closer with a door to be operated, said door check and closer being provided with a post; of a ratchet sleeve mounted on the post, a second sleeve mounted on the post to turn therewith at all times, means to lock the ratchet wheel to the post, a connecting part for attachment to the door and means between the connecting part and the second sleeve to permit adjustment of the post independently of the connecting part and door.
32. In a device for accurately connecting the post of a door check and closer with a door to be operated, said door check and closer being provided with a post; a ratchet member mounted loosely on the post, a second member mounted on the post to turn therewith, means to lock the ratchet member to the post, a connecting part adapted to be coupled to the door and means between the connecting part and the second member to permit adjustment of the post and serving to lock or hold the same in adjusted position as well as to cause movement or operation of the door with the post in unison when the latter is actuated.
