UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. HANDEL, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE HANDEL COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
FASTENING FOR SHADES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed September 10, 1918. Serial No. 253,360.
T 0 all w ham it may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM F. I-IANDEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Shades, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of shades which are formed in panels and which panels are secured together by means of ribs and has for its object to produce a simple and efiicient form of fastening device for this purpose.
My means for accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings which are hereunto annexed and are a part of this specification in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shade constructed in accordance with my improvement part of the wall being broken away to show the interior construction.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the fastening device.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view.
Fig. 4 is an isometric perspective view of the complete fastening device disassembled.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings the shade comprises a plurality of panels 5. These panels are provided with intermediate ribs 6 Which are T shaped. The arms 7 and 8 of the T extend over the edges of adjacent panels. Reduced necks or stems 9 extend outwardly from the center 10 of the T shaped rib 6 and are provided with threads cut thereon. The fastening device comprises a. U shaped member 11,the sides of the U extending over the inturned flanges 12 and 18 of the adjacent panels 5. A nut 14 having internal threads which are fitted to and coincide with threads out upon the reduced neck or stem 9, is mounted thereon. It will be obvious to persons skilled in the art from an inspection of Fig. 3 that by tightening the nut 14, the rib 6 is drawn tightly against the outer walls of the panels 5, while the sides of the U shaped member 11 are drawn tightly down over the flanges l2 and 13, thus holding the panels as securely as if they were made of a single piece; the whole forming a simple and effective fastening device for shades of this character and reducing the danger of breakage in assemblage to a minimum. Practice has shown that it is essential that the sides of the U should be parallel and not tapered to avoid the tendency to chip and break the flanges of the panels.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described the combination with a shade formed of panels having inturned flanges at their adjacent edges, of a T shaped rib mounted intermediate the said panels, a plurality of stems extending outwardly from thereutral portion of said T shaped rib, threads cut thereon, a U shaped member mounted on each of said stems the sides of which are fitted to and coincide with the flanges of the adjacent panels and means to secure said U shaped member rigidly in position.
2. In a device of the character described the combination with a shade formed of panels having flanges at their adjacent edges, of a T shaped rib mounted intermediate the said panels, a plurality of stems extending outwardly from the central portion of said T shaped rib, threads out thereon, a U shaped member mounted on each of said stems the sides of which are parallel, and means to secure said U shaped member rigidly in position.
3. In a device of the character described the combination with a shade formed of panels having inturned flanges at their adjacent edges, of a T shaped rib mounted intermediate the said panels, a U-shaped member 'detachably secured to said rib to hold said panels rigidly in position.
WILLIAM F. HANDEL.
