The improved paper feed is shown herein as applied to cash registers of the kind described in the patent to J. L. Morris, No. 1,101,317 of June 23, 1914, and in the patent to J. L. Morris and A. W. Larimore, No. 1,292,354 of January 21, 1919, and, as illustrated herein, are shown in connection with such a cash register. a
In a cash register of the kind described, there is provided in addition to the several check strips for the usual cas charge, received on account, and paid out transactions, a record strip or strips for recording such transactions, said several check strips and the record strips being exposed through suitable openings in the cover plate of the cash register, in order that, the transactions may be written upon said strips.
In a cash register of-the kind described, there'is a master memberorlever for feeding the record strip or strips and for releasing the cash drawer locking mechanism,said master member or lever beingoperable only after the record strip or strips are written upon through the opening or openings through which they are exposed, and after a check has been issued.
The openings in the cover plate through which the check strips and the record strip or strips are exposed, are'necessarily limited by the width of the platen over which they pass, and this platen, in the case of the check strips, is only required to be of comparatively narrow width, and in many cases there is but the same required narrow width for inscription upon the record strip or strips, namely, a sufficient width to write one line. It sometimes occurs, however, in the entry or a transaction, that it may be desirable to use more than the space to be oc-' cupied by one line, in order to itemize an entry on the record strip, as for example, when an amount of cash to be indicated on the check strip in the column received on account includes several different items, of no moment to be indicated on the check issued to the customer, but of necessity to be entered as a record of the proceeding upon the record strip. In such case it is desirable to be able to feed the record strip one or more lines or spaces over the platen, independently of the normal required feed of one space or line which is had in cash registers of the kind referred to, by means of the manipulation of the master member or lever, which finally feeds the check strip I and releases the cash drawer after the check has been issued to unlock said master member or lever.
The object of the present invention is to provide such an independent feeding mechanism for the record strip or strips 'and to provide it in such manner that while it may be operated independently of the master member or lever, its presence in the mechanism, in no way interferes with the control heretofore had of the master lever, which operates in the same way and which has the same function as before, and in addition, the
operation of said supplementary record feeding means is only possible in each case in connection with a single total transaction written or inscribed upon one of the check strips.

Referring now in detail to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings :-10 indicates the box or cabinet which incloses the operating mechanism of a cash register of the kind described, to which the improvements referred to herein are applied. 11 indicates the cash drawer normally locked by mechanism which is only released upon the operaof the check strips may be brought about;
17 and 18, the openings through which the record strip is exposed; and 19 indicates the master member or lever which controls the feed of the record strip and the unlocking of the cash drawer.
The construction and operation of the several parts referred to, except as hereinafter pointed out, are the same as in the patent and application heretofore mentioned, and require no further description, except to say that in illustrating this invention, but one record strip is used, instead of two as in the caseof the application heretofore mentioned, said record strip extending the width of the cover plate and being intended tobe written upon in connection both with cash transactions as well as the other transactions, instead of there being provided two independent record strips, one for cash and one for the other transactions, as in the case of the-application mentioned.

The right hand end of the platen part 22 has a detent30 which normally engages a horizontally swinging, spring controlled trigger 31, which acts to lock the several check strip feed slides, until the depressible platen part is written upon, when it acts to release said slides, and which is returned by the master lever to its normal locking position, as said lever is operated to feed the record strip and to release the cash drawer.
Passing now to the novel improvements particularly intended to be covered here in :-32 indicates the upright end frame of the machine to the outside of which is pivoted the master member or lever 19. The same is pivoted on a screw 33 and its shorter arm 34 is connected by a link 35 to a swinging arm 36, pivoted on a stud 37 and having a short finger 38. On the stud 37 is also pivoted, adjacent the swim ing arm 36, an arm 39 carrying a pin 40, w ich is engaged by the short finger 38 of the swinging arm 36. The arm 39 carries a The pawl is spring controlled and the op eration is such that when the master mem- 1 her or. lever 19 is swung rearwardly (to the left, as shown in Fig. 2), the swin ing arm 36, byits engagement with the stu 40, will swing downwardly the arm 39 by which said stud is carried, and the pawl 41, by reason. of its engagement with the stud 44, and its pivotal connection with the arm 39, will be swung into engagement with. the ratchet wheel 42 and will cause said ratchet wheel to turn through a certain angle .which, as the machineis designed, is equal to substantially the width of the platen.
A spring controlled retaining. pawl 45 piv-' oted on. the stud 37 acts to hold the feed roll against back lash.
In addition to this master mechanism for pivoted pawl 41 adapted for engagement feeding the record roll, there is provided crank lever 46 having an n right arm 46 and a horizontal arm 46. he arm 46 is pivotally connected to the arm 39 on the same pivot by which said arm is connected to the pawl 41, for operating the record rewind roll. A slot 46 is provided in the arm at this connection, to permit the necessary lost motion. The upright arm 46 of said bell crank lever, is extended upwardly and rearwardly into a plane below the plane of the cover plate. Attached to the top of the end frame 32 in the plane of the cover plate, is a laterally extending plate 47 in which is formed a guide slot 48, for the master lever. On the plate 47, is mounted a slide 49, said slide being substantially of the same form as the slides used in connection with the feed of the check strips, and having an upright finger 49. The slide is attached to the plate by means of screws 50, 50, which take through a slot 51 in the plate 47 and are engaged in a bar 52 (see Figs. 6 and 8), which has its top surface engaged against the bottom side of the plate 47. The construction is such that the screws 50,50 guide the movement of the slide 49 in the slot 51, in a path parallel to the vertical plane of the end frame 32, and move the bar 52 on the under side of the plate 47 with the slide 49.
The bar 52 is cut as shown, to provide a lip 53 which is bent downwardly below the plane of said bar, to form a detent. Said detent depends into a position backof an upright lug 31 on the trigger 31, which is operable as heretofore described, by the depressible platen part 22. The construction is such that when the depressible platen part is operated by writing upon the record strip, the trigger 31 swinging to the right (as viewed in Figs. 4 and 7), will remove the lug31 from the path of the detent 53. This unlocks the slide 49 so as to permit it to be moved forwardly on the plate 47. The upwardly and rearwardly inclined part of the arm 46 of the bell crank lever 46 is indicated by the numeral 46 This part 46 of the arm 46 is engaged at its rear end by a hook 54 on the bar 52,--said hook the depressible platen part 22 is depressed by reason of the'writing or inscription made upon the record strip, the trigger 31, which is spring controlled, swings to remove the lug 31* from the path of the detent 53,- this occurring at the same time and in the same movement of the'trigger in which the slides for partially feeding the check strips, are unlocked. This movement of the trigger has no effect to unlock the master member or lever 19-. But, the slide 49, being unlocked, may be'pushed forwardly, that is to say, in the same direction as the check strip feeding slides are moved,'and in this movement there is caused a swinging movement of the bell crank lever 46,--this because of the engagement of the detent 53 on the bar 52 connected to the slide 49. The swinging movement of the lever 46'results in a movement of the arm 46 thereof to actuate the distance that it would be fed if the master lever were released and capable of operation. This movement of the slide to feed the record strip may be repeated any number of times to feed the record strip the necessary amount to Write upon it through the opening 18, the number of different items desired. In each case, after the orward movement of the slide 49, said slide and the bell crank lever 46 to which it is connected, are returned to their normal, initial positions, by "reason of a spring 55, which in this case is a coiled spring mounted on the screw 33, with oppositely acting arms 55, 55",the one acting against the upright arm 46 of the bell crank lever 46, and the other acting against the lever 19 in such manner as 'to normally hold each of said levers in their initial positions and to return each of said levers to its initial position whenit has been removed therefrom.
It will be manifest from the description and illustration of the mechanism for producing the independent feed of the record strip, that after the unlocking of the slide 49, brought about by the inscription through the opening 18, on the record strip, the feed of the record strip is entirely independent of the master lever. However, when the last independent feeding movement of the record strip has been produced, and the final feeding movement thereof, to present a fresh space to correspond with the issue of the next check strip (this being coincident with the unlocking of the cash drawer). is to be made, as after the check strip has. been pulled out and delivered, a last feeding movement, as always heretofore, is necessarily produced in the operation of the master lever. In this movement of the Inaster lever, the trigger as heretofore, is swung back into the position to lock all the check strip feed slides, and also in the same way, "to lock the independent record strip feeding slide 49, which is locked by reason of the swinging back of the trigger to bring the lug'31 into the path of the detent 53 on the bar 52-connected to the slide 49.
While in describing the invention, there are referred to certain details of construction and of operation, it will be understood that the invention is in no way limited thereto, except as pointed out in the ap pended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. In a paper feed for manifolding machines of the kind described, in combination with check strip feeding means, record strip feeding means, and a normally locked mas ter member for operating said record strip feeding means, normally locked means for independently feeding said record strip, a member for unlocking said independent record-strip-feeding means, and devices opcrated by said master member for relocking said independent record-strip-feeding means.

4, In a paper feed for manifolding machines of. the kind described, in combination with check strip feeding means, a record strip feeding means, and a normally locked master member for operating said record strip feeding means, a platen including a depressible part over which said record strip is fed, normally locked meansfor independently feeding said record strip, means operated by said depressible platen part for unlocking said independent record strip feeding means, and means actuated by strip feeding means, and a normally locked master member for operating said record strip feeding means, means for independently feeding said record strip, a trigger normally locking said independent record strip feeding means. and means operable upon writing on said record strip for actuating said trigger to unlock said independent record strip feeding means, said trigger being actuated in the operation of said master member to relock said independent record strip feeding means.
6.- In a paper feed for manifolding machines of the kind described, in combination with check strip feeding means, a record strip feeding means and'a normally locked master member for operating said record strip feeding means, a platen including a depressible platen part over which said record strip is fed, means for independently feeding said record strip, and a trigger normally locking said independent record strip feeding means, said trigger acting to unlock said independent record strip feeding means when said depressible platen part is depressed, and t0 relock said independent record strip feeding means when said master member is operated.
7. In a paper feed for manifolding machines of the kind described, including a platen over which a record strip, transfer means, and a check strip are adapted to be fed, a cover plate provided with laterally spaced openings, one'to expose the check strip and one to expose the record strip, normally locked means for partially feeding said check strip, a normally locked master member for feeding said record strip, a normally locked slide bar for feeding said record 'strip. independently of said master member, a spring controlled, depressible part included in said platen located below the opening which exposes said record strip, and
means operated by said depressible platen part for unlocking said slide bar, said means being actuated in theoperation of said ma's,
openings, one to expose the check strip and one to expose the record strip, normally locked means for partially feeding said check strip, a normally locked master member adaptedfor operative connection with said record rewind roll, a secondlever adapted for operative connection with said rewind roll, a normally locked slide bar on said cover plate operatively connected to said second lever, a depressible part included in said platen located below the opening which exposes said record strip. and means opermeaeoa ated byisaid depressible platen part for unlocking said slide bar without unlocking said master member.
9. In a paper feed for manifolding machines ot' the kind described, including a platen over which a record strip, transfer means, and a check strip are adapted to be fed, a rewind roll for said record strip, a cover plate provided with laterally spaced openings, one to expose the check strip and one to expose the record strip, normally locked means for partially feeding said check strip, a normally locked master member adapted for operative connection with said rewind roll, a second lever adapted for operative connection with said rewind roll, a normally locked slide bar on said cover plate operatively connected to said second lever, a depressible part included in said platen located below the opening which exposes said record strip, and means operated by said depressible platen part for unlocking said slide bar, said last mentioned means being actuated in the operation of said mas ter member to relock said slide.

In a paper feed for manifolding machines of the kind described, including a platen over which a record strip, transfer means, and a check strip are adapted to be .openings, one to expose the check strip and one to expose the record strip, normally locked means for partially feeding said check strip, a normally locked master member adapted for operative connection with said rewind roll, a second lever also adapted for operative connection with said rewind roll, a normally locked slide bar on said cover plate operatively connected to said second lever, aspring controlled, depressible part included in said platen, located below the opening which exposes said record strip, and a trigger engaged by said depressible platen part, normally holding said slide against movement, said trigger when released by said platen part acting to unlock said slide bar and to again lock said slide bar when said master member is actuated.
