The present improvements involve the provision of special instrumentalities designed to coact with the type carriers whereby to insure the desired alinement of the same before the printing action takes. place and the invention is peculiarly characterized in thatafter the type carriers operated to effect the desired listing are moved for printing adjustment, they are all given a slight, but positive return movement, byan alining device so as to accurately positlon them at the printing point in a mannerjsuch that they are held substantially independent of their actuating connections while the im pression of the types is being made.

main actuator is a handle '501 and main ac tu'ating shaft 625. The accumulator A is 10- c'ated at-the front portion of the machine and the printing or listing mechanism B at the rear portion. On the main shaft 625 is carried the cam sector'502 having the 'flexi-- ble connection 509 with the control lever 508 which is'fixe'd to the governor shaft 626. The-movement of the shaft 625 by the handle 501 'is designed to rock the sector sectional view taken about on 502 back and forth, correspondingly rock 1 the control lever 508, and shift the wipe pawl 511 at the upper end of said lever into special cooperative engagements with the three-armed lever 316 whereby the latter lever is adapted to move the adding pinions of the accumulator Ainto and out of engagement with respect to the adding racks 301. It is noted, however, that the adding racks 301 have connection at their lower ends withthe front ends of operating levers 500 which are loosely mounted on the shaft 625,
provided with depending arms 500 attached to springs 616 that normally tend to move the levers 500 downward at their front ends and upward at their rear ends. The rear ends of the levers 500 connectec with type carriers 706, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3 especially, and movement of the levers 500 will therefore cause opposite movement of the racks 301 and carriers 706 attached thereto.
Normally the levers 500 are maintained in the positions shown in Fig. 2 by a. detent bail which consists of a cross piece 505 and side arms 505. The arms505 are formed with crooked slots in which. are adapted to operate rollers 626 on the lower ends of arms 627 which latter are fixed to the-gov ernor shaft 626 to rock with the latter. The cross 505 of the detent bail engages over the rear end portions of the levers 500 and said levers are maintained in their normal positions by said bar until operation of the main shaft 625 rocks said shaft, the sector 502, the control lever 508 and the arms 62?, whereupon at a certain period in the movement of these parts the detent bail is raised and the lovers 500 are adapted to be rocked or tilted by their springs 616.
Indexing and listing mechanism.
The tilting movement of the levers 500 is controlled by the keyboard mechanism including the keys 2? and suitable indexing stops 110, one provided for each key 29, and
' those for each row of keys being superposed.
Depression of a key 29 of a certain row forces rearwardly, by means of a pin 20, the locking bar 302, disengages the front end of said bar from a projection 301 on the coacting rack 301, and simultaneously h projects vforward an indexing stop 1.10 into special feature of the present invention, the
same, however, including the types 726 on the carriers 706, and hammers 700 toimpinge against the types positioned at the printing point, said hammers being restrained normally by triggers 702 engaging catches 868 on suitable drivers. The means to release or tire the hammers may be of any conventional sort.
The several type carriers 706 operate vertically, being supported for sliding movement by an upper transverse guide rod 845 passing through upper slotted portions of said carriers. At their lower ends the car; riers are termed with slots at the front portions of which. are provided the teeth 706 the rear walls of the slots being straight to coact with the lower guide member 1 which is plate formed with teeth engaging between the several carriers to maintain the same properly spaced, a cap plate 2 being utilized to retain the carriers against lateral displacement from their operative engagement with the member 1.

Having in view the foregoing description, it must. be apparent that the positioning of the type carriers 706 so that the types to be printed are in alinement, in'the' absence of special provision being made, depends upon the complete accuracy in the formation of the cooperating stops 110 and projections 301 respectively, the latter upon the adding racks 301; also upon the connections between the levers 500' and the adding racks and type carriers, as well as the mounting otthe types themselves. In practice it is found almost impossible to secure such ac curacy of construction of all these connections to obtain a desired alinement of the number or character types 726, as the case may be. By this invention it is proposed, therefore, to obtain the initial positioning of the type carriers, difl erentially controlled, by the usual operation and construction of parts as hereinbefore set forth, but in addition to this to effect after such positioning a final readjustment of'the carriers by way of a reversing movement by which the latter are positioned by directly cotiperative part or alining device proper. The readjustment s actually a reverse movement of the type carriers to that incident to their original po- 12 fixed to said shaft 625., At its rear end sitioning and causes the carriers. to beheld ractically independently of those devices y which the preliminary printing adjustment is secured.
The type alining mechanism is best seen in Figs. 4:, 5 and ,6 of the drawings, and referring to Figs. 3 and 5 it will be seen that there is located coiiperative with the main shaft 625 a drag bar 14 slotted at its front end to engage with the shaft andprovvided with a pin 13 operating in the space between projections 12 of a rocker member .with vertical slots of operating levers 5 which are piv'ted at their lower ends at" 19 on the side plates 705 forming the frame in which the listing 'instrumentalities are mounted. Obviously therefore, movement of the operating device comprising the arms 10 and 11 is adapted to impart correspond ing slight tilting movement to the levers 5.

The levers 5 furthermore are provided at their upper ends with crooked slots 5 re: ceiving rollers carried by the upper ends of the arms 4: of the alining bail, the formation 1 of the slots 5 being such that during initial movement forward of the 1evers5, under are 5 control the action of the operatingdevice therefor,
including the arms 10 and'll, thestops 20 are carried forward and permit the springs 23 to engage the alining bar-3 with the teeth 7 06 preliminarily adjusted by the operation of the general mechanism of the machine, to a position in front of said bar. The final portion of themovement of the levers 5v causes the. lower rear ends of the slots 5 toengage the rollers 22 and slightly depress SHId IOllBIS in 'such a manner as-to carry doitnward the alining device which has now been engaged with the type carriers. This, slight final movement of the ali'ning device causes the bar 3 to engage with the upper straight surfaces of the teeth 706 and imparts a slight downward movement to all of the preliminarily adjusted type car-- riers suflicient to bring the types to be alined to the printing point opposite the platen D at which printing point the types are accu-' rately alined and held during the impingement action of the hammers 700. Onthe return movement of the operating device for the levers 5 the latter move rearwardly, -initially raise the alining device, and finally the stops 20 engage the arms 4 and shift the alining device outward from the path of movement of the teeth 7 06*.
It is to be noted that the rollers 22 co operating with the levers 5 are carried by studs 21 (see Fig. 4) which' pass through short vertical slots in theflframe plates 705.
The actuation ofthe operating device for the alining means 1s of course controlled from the main shaft 625, thedrag bar 14- i being shifted forward incident to the engagement of the rear lug 12 of the rocker member 12 with the pin 13, and rearward by the corresponding engagement of the forward lug 12 with said pin '13.
The springs. 23. are comparatively light springs, such only being required because the bar 3 swings into its operative engagement with the type carriers 706. Necessarily the lighter the springs 23the better since the alining device is returned to normal incident to the return of the levers 500 and connected parts to normal under the action of main restoring springs.
The governor mechanism;
Reference has been previously made to the governor shaft 626. As seen in Fig. 6 this shaft has an arm 60 provided with a stud '60 engaging the bifurcation of an arm 61 fixed on the shaft 1071. The shaft 1071 .is connectedin any suitable manner as by arms 516 with the plunger of a dash pot 663 which forms a governor for controlling uniform movement of the various operating partsof the machine irrespective of how quickly the main shaft 625 may be operated by the handle 501. Itiisi to'be understood that every time the mainshaft 625 is rocked thegovernor shaft 626 and connecting parts 60, 61 and 516 are actuated as controlled mentioned in' cooperation With the alining means, whereby tocoordinate the operation of the alining mechanism with the other principal'mechanisms of themachine, and assuring, of course, as well the proper preliminary adjustment of the type carriers before the-alining adjustment is effected.
with, the foregoing in view, as seen in Figs. 4 and 5 the governor shaft 626 is provided with a governor cam 8 formed with a notched out extremity, and operating in engagement with a roller 9 carried by the arm 10 of the operating device for the alining means. By reason of the provision of the cam 8 it will be observed that the operating arms 10 and 11 cannot move forward to actuate the levers 5 until the cam 8 has been sufliciently rotated in the direction of the arrow to bring its notched portion opposite the roller 9. Notwithstanding, there fore, that the shaft 625 may be moved so I quickly as to shift the drag bar 14 faster than required or necessary, the flexible con- 'n'ection 15 permits the cam 8 to retard the movement of the operating arms 10 and 11 until the other mechanisms of the machine have been properly operated to make timely the aliningaction of the alining device.
It is to be noted that the present invention is'not intended to be limited to the'application of the principle of operation of the alining means hereinbefore set forth in regard merely to type carriers. The typecarriers as described herein and intended to be covered in the claims constitute, broadly speaking, accounting devices and should be considered such in recognizing the scope of the claims annexed hereto. Obviously the alining mechanism of the invention is as advantageous for use in connection with other registering, accounting, and equiva-' lent parts that requlre alinement, as with carriers.
ty e v l-Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In an accounting machine, the combi nation of accounting mechanism including accounting devices, controlling connections for moving selected of said devices to carry the same award predetermined operating positions for-preliminary adjustment, means to intentionally readjust all of said selected carriers to final operating position, and means to prevent action of thelast means until said preliminary adjustment is completed.
2. In a listing machine, the combination of printing mechanism including a platen, type carriers, controlling connections for moving said carriers to carry their types semamas;
nation of accounting devices, controlling connections for moving said devices toward predetermined operating positions for a preliminary adjustment thereof, an alining member engageable with-said devices, resilient means to move the alining member into engagement with the said devices, an operating device coacting with the alining member to restrain the same during the preliminary adjustment of said accumulating devices, and means to actuate the operating device to permit engagement of the alining member with the accounting devices and to then effect longitudinal movement of said alining member whereby to cause a corresponding final alining adjustment of the accounting devices in operating positions.
4. In a machine or" the classdescribed, the" combination of -prmtmg mechanism includalining device cooperative with said teeth,
and means to move said device laterally and longitudinally to cause alining action of the same in respect to the carriers.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination of printing mechanism including type carriers, means for moving the carriers to preliminary positions, stops to differentially control the action of the last mentioned means and correspondingly con- 'trol the said positioning of the carriers, alining teeth provided on the carriers, an alining bail cooperative with said teeth, means to engage the bail with the teeth, and an operating device for the bail comprising stops for normally holding the same out of engagement with the teeth and comprising means for shifting the bail after it, has been engaged with the teeth.
6. In a machine of the class; described, the combination of printing. mechanism including type carriers, means for moving the carriers to preliminary printing positions, stops to dili'erentially control the action of the last mentioned means and correspondingly control the said positioning of the carriers, alining teeth provided on the carriers, an alining device cooperative with the'teeth of the carriers, spring means to cause engagement of said device with theteeth, an operating device controlling the action of the alining device and comprising stops normally holding the alining device. out of engagement Leas es with the teeth, and means to move said stops to permit engagement of the alining device with the teeth, and to impart separate move- I ment to the alining device to cause alining action thereof in respect to the carriers.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of type carriers, means for differentially operat'mgthe same to move the carriers for preliminary adjustment, an alining device associated with said carriers, and means for operating said device to cause an intentional final reverse movement of the carriers, after they have reached their preliminary adjustment, whereby to accurately '9. In combination, a plurality of slidable type carriers provided with teeth,.means for 'difierentially moving said carriers for pre- .liminary printing adjustment, and alining mechanism for said'carriers including a pivoted alining bail, levers coiiperating to hold said bail in an inactive position, means to cause engagement of the bail with the teeth of the carriers, operating arms for shifting the levers to permit the bail to assume an operative position in relation to the teeth of the carriers, and means intermediate the levers and the bail to then move the bail bodily'to cause alining action of the same on the teeth of the carriers.
10. In a listing machine, the combination of printing mechanism including type carriers, controlling connections for moving said carrierstoward a predetermined printing point for preliminary printing adjustment, an alining device for effecting a final alining readjustment of said carriers, an operating device for said alining device, and a governor adapted to prevent the action of the operating device on said alining device until after completion of the preliminary adjustment of the carriers.

In a listingmachine, the combination of printing mechanism including type car riers, controlling connections for moving said carriers toward a predetermined printing point for preliminary printing adjustment, an alining device for effecting a final alining readjustment of said carriers, an operating device, forv said alining device, a
governor adapted to-pr'event the action of the operating device on said alining device until after completion of the preliminary adjustment of the carriers, operating means for the said controlling connections, and con nections intermediate said operating means and the governor whereby the operating means is likewise controlled-by the governor, and a main actuator coacting with the said controlling connections.
12. In a listing machine, the combination of printing mechanism including type carriers, controlling connections for .moving said carriers toward-a predetermined printing point for preliminary printing adjust ment, an alining device cooperative with the carriers to effect. a final alining readjustment of the same, a main actuator controlling the operation of said controlling connections, and a retarding governor coacting with the alining device to prevent its operation before the operation of the controlling connections is completed.
13. In a listing machine, the combination of printing mechanism includingtype carriers, controlling connections for moving said carriers toward a predetermined printmg point for preliminary printing ad ustment, an alining device cooperative With the carriers to efl'ect a final alining readjustment of thesame, a main actuator controlling the operation of said controlling connections, a. retarding governor coacting with the alining device, and connections inter--- mediate said governor and the main actuator.

In combination, listing mechanism 1ncluding type carriers, operating means for said type carriers, ajnain actuator controlling said operating means, a governor cooperative with the listing mechanism to control the speed of operation of said mechanism, alining mechanism for the type car. riers including an alining device directly coacting therewith, means to engage said device with the type carriers and shift said deviceto effect final alining movementof the carriers, and a controlling connection intermediate the last mentioned means and the governor. a

In combination, listing mechanism ineluding type carriers, operating means -for said type carriers, a main actuator control ling said operating means, a governor cooperative with the listing mechanism to con-' trol the speed of operatlon Of'StllCl mechamsm, alining mechanism for the type carriers including an alining device directly 'coactmg therewith. means to engage said device with the type carriers and shift said device to effect final alining movement of the carriers, a controlling connection intermediate the last mentioned means and the governor, and an operating connection intermediate the main actuator and said alining device.

In combination, listing mechanism ineluding type carriers, means controlling din? ferential positioning of the latter, a. main actuator governing the operation of said can riers, an alining device adapted to directly engage the carriers to aline the same, and separate controlling parts intermediate the main actuator and the carriers and alining device for effecting initial movement of the carriers in one direction for preliminary printing adjustment and-for'then shifting the alining device in a direction to impart reverse movement to the carriers to finally aline the same for printin 17.
