THOMAS J. MOODY, OF PETERSBURG, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO MABURY L. BEAN AND ONE-THIRD T0 CLARENCE R. TURNER, BOTH 0F PETERSBURG, ILLINOIS.
' BARREL.
T 0 all'whomz't may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MOODY, a citizen of the United States, residing .at Petersbuw, in the county of Menard and State of llinois, have invented a new and useful Barrel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to knock down barrels, one of its objects being to provide a barrel which can be transported, complete, in a compact form and which can be easily set up for use without requiring the use of any special tool or the services of a skilled mechanic.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the con1- bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a barrel having the present improvement combined therewith, a portion being broken away.
Fig. 2 1s an elevation of a portion of the barrel showing the parts disconnected.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33, Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4.4:, Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of a modified form of fastening device, the barrel staves being shown moved apart.
Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6, Fig. 5.
Referring tothe figures by characters of reference 1 designates ordinary barrel staves adapted, when properly assembled and set up, to surround heads one of which has been shown in Fig. 1 and both heads being alike. Each head is preferably formed of an intermediate section 2 and end sections 3, said end sections being hingedly connected, as at 4, to opposite faces respectively of the intermediate section so that the sections can be folded one upon the other. center. In the structure shown in Figs. 1 to l inclusive the sectional hoop is made up of wire llnks 6 each of which has terminal eyes 7 formedby looping the end portions of a link of wlre forming the link. The ends of the wire are coiled or wrapped about the intermediate portion of said wire and form prongs which are adapted to be driven into and clenched within the adjacent stave across which the wire is extended. The clench has been clearly illustrated at 8 in Fig. 4:. As each of the wire links has both of its ends clenched in the stave 011 which the link is mounted it will be obvious that said link is thus firmly secured in place. The eyes on the adjoining links interfit so that the links form a chain or hoop which will flex when the hoops 5 are removed, thus to allow the staves to be laid substantially flat when the barrel is in knock down condition. The terminal eyes formed at the ends of the chain or hoop are enlarged as indicated at 9 and 10 respectively. To one of these eyes, 9, is pivotally connected a tongue 11 suitably secured to one of the end staves of the barrel and having a short bolt or threaded stud 12 extending outwardly therefrom. Another tongue 13 is pivotally connected to the eye 10 and has spaced openings 14 either of which is adapted to receive the bolt or sstud 12 which is fastened in place by a nut 15 or the like. I
It is to be understood that the two tongues 11 and 13 can only be fastened together after the staves of the barrel have been set up for use. The stud 12 is insertible into the most convenient opening 14: and fastened, and when the parts are thus secured the staves will properly contact as shown in Fig. 1. The barrel heads are of course placed in position and the hoops 5 can be driven onto the staves so as to bind them on the heads. To knock down the barrel the tongues 11 and 13 are disconnected from each other and the hoops 5 are removed. T husthe staves can be laid out substantially flat and the heads can be folded and conveniently stored.
Instead of making the flexible hoop out of wires forming links such as described, the hoop can be made of flat metal links 16 fastened to the respective staves by rivets 17 or the like. Each of these links 16 has terminal eyes 18 and mounted in the eyes are connecting loops or links 19. The strip 16 forming one end of the flexible hoop has a button 20 pivotally mounted thereon and the strip lfl forining the other end of a hoop is not attacheol to a stave but hangs freely and has a slot 21 therein. Thus when the barrel is set up for use the end strip 16 will lap and the button20 can be inserted through the slot 21 and thenrotated so as to fasten the two end strips together as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
What is claimed is:
1. In a knock down'barrel, aplurality of staves, ailink extending transversely'of each stave at the center thereof, each link comprising a single link of wire bent to form end eyes: and inwardly extending prongs, the prongs of each link being clenched within the stave on Whichthe link is mounted, the eyes onthe links of adjoining staves interfitting toform a flexible hoop, a tongue pivotally connectedto one. eye on one of the links and secured to a stave, another tongue secured to the. eye of another link, the two tongues forming'the ends of the flexible hoop, and coop -rating means-up n theitwo ongue for fastening them together.
In a knockdown barre a plurality o stares, a link extending transversely of each stave at the center thereof, each link comprising a singlelink ofwi're'bent to form end eyes and inwardly extending prongs the prongs of each link beingclenched within the stave on which the link is mounted, the eyes-on the links of adjoining staves interfitting to form a flexible hoop, a tongue pivotally connected toone eye on oneofthe links and secured to a stave, another tongue secured to the eye of another link, the two tongues forming" the ends ofthe flexible hoop, andan attaching stud projecting from one of the tongues, there being a plurality of apertures in the other tongue.
lntestimony that I claim the foregoing as HIYOWII, I have hereto "afl ixed my: signature inthe presence. of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. MOODY.
