Description

H. c. BUNTING. COMBINATION ROOF STRAP AND RIVET CLEAT. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 21,1919.
1,362,557. Patnted Dec. 14, 1920.
W Q w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOMER CLYDE BUNTING, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
COMBINATION ROOF-STRAP AND RIVET-CLEA'I.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER CLYDE BUNT- me, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Roof-Straps and Rivet-Cleats, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide a simple and efficient form of combination strap and rivet cleat for attaching the roof plates of structural steel buildings to the supporting beams and for analogous uses, and the invention comprises a flexible metal straight bar or strap of steel of high tensile strength and provided with terminal portions, of increased thickness, providing longitudinal shoulders from which project at right angles cylindrical rivet members.
The body of the strap is then bent downward intermediate of its ends to form a loop, to inclose the supporting angle or channel beam and the thickened shoulder portions make contact with the roof plates and the rivet members are passed through openings in the roof plates and are headed over, thus making a convenient mode of attachment and rigid connection between the parts.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device; Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a portion of a roof plate and angle bars, showing the manner of applying the device.
In these views, A is a straight metal strap, drop forged from steel of high tensile strength and capable of being bent cold about the angle bars D, D, below the roof plates,
which are designated F in Fig. 3.
The extremities of the strap are thickened and flattened on their longitudinal faces upon one side at B, B, forming shoulders, from which extend preferably at right angles to the integral rivet the members 0, C.
Preferably the straps are bent before using so that they can be quickly applied. They are bent so as to reverse the positions of the ends, shown in Fig. 1, bringing the shoulders B in a common horizontal plane as shown in Fig. 3 in the same plane with the rivets C standing vertically.
The cleat is then placed about the beams and the rivet members C are inserted in openings G, G, in the roof plates, and are then flattened at a driving heat to three times the diameter of the shank, thus rigidly securing the roof plates to the beams.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A strap comprising an elongated metal strap provided with thi kened extremities and attaching means on said extremities.
2. In a combination strap and rivets, an elongated metal strap provided with thickened extremities and integral rivet members extending from said extremities.
3. In a combination strap and rivets,
an elongated metal strap provided with thickened extremities, and rivet members extending at right angles from the longitudinal faces of said extremities.
4. In a combination strap and rivets, an elongated metal strap provided with thickened extremities and integral rivet members extending from the longitudinal faces of said extremities on the same side of said strap.
5. In a combination strap and'rivets, an elongated metal strap provided with integral thickened extremities, rivet members attached to the longitudinal faces of said extremities on one side thereof and at right angles thereto, said strap bent intermediate of its ends to form a holding loop, said longitudinal faces of said extremities to which rivet members are attached lying in a common plane.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand this 11 day of J an., 1919.
HOMER CLYDE BUNTING.
In presence of- S. W. SANGSTER, WM. M. MONROE.
