Application filed August 8, 1918. Serial No. 248,895. 1
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon I. HoHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrapping-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in automatic wrapping machines; and the invention relates, more particularly, to a novel construction of apparatus, and the devices and parts thereof, by means of which chocolate almond bars, nut bars, and other cake confections, and similar articles may be provided with a suitable protecting sanitary wrapping and a label. i
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel wrapping mechanism constructed to apply a wrapping quickly and securel about the irregular surface of such artic es as nut bars and chocolate cakes of various kinds, without danger of fracturing the wrapper, while at the same time assuring a secure envelopment of the article therein, the Wrapping mechanism readily accommodating itself to any surface irregularities in the article, due to projecting nut particles, etc.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine adapted to employ tinfoil wrapping material without injury to such fragile material.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for making or fitting the end folds of the wrapper'over articles having beveled or chamfered ends.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide novel means for positively feeding each article in properly timed sequence to and through the wrapping mechanism.
Other objects of the present invention,
not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
With the various objects of the invention in view, the same consists, prnnarily. m the.
novel wrapping machine hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, the invention consists in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construc-, tion of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the claims which are appended thereto.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the novel construction of wrapping machine made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same, the label stack and wrapping material roll being omitted; Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the transmission mechanism associated with the main driving shaft, the wrapping and labeling elements of the machine being omitted; and Fig. 4 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the machine, the wrapping material roll being omitted.

Fig. 7 is a detail view of the label feed or delivery mechanism; Fi 8 is a detail view of the air valve mec anism of said label feed or delivery mechanism, drawn on an enlarged scale and showing the same in open position; and Fig. 9 is a similar view showing the air valve mechanism in closed position.
Fig. 10 is a detail vertical section, illustrating the" mounting of and transmission mechanism of the glue applying means.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
' Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference character indicates the complete apparatus showing one embodiment of the novel wrapping machine, the same comprising a pair of side frames 2 supported by suitable standards 3, [upon which the mechanism is mounted. Connected with, the lower marginal edges of said side frames are bearingmembers 4 in which is journaled a main driving shaft 5 extending transversely of said side frames. Said driving shaft 5 is provided at one end with a suitable driving pulley 6, loosely mounted thereon, but adapted to cooperate with a clutch mechanism 7, fast on said shaft, whereby said shaft may be brought into driven relation to said pulley. Supported in connection with the forward end of said side frames, by means of brackets 8, is a platform 9. Journaled in bearing brackets 10, preferably mounted upon the upper cross bar 11 of the forward standard 3, is a shaft 12, upon which are fixed a pair.of laterally spaced sprocket-wheels 13 over which run delivering conveyer chains 14, having at properly spaced longitudinal intervals propelling elements 15; The said platform 9 is provided with cutaway portions or openings through which the upper peripheral portions of said sprockets 13 project in such manner that said propelling elements 15 may deliver articles to be wrapped upon said platform 9. Outwardly extending longitudinally projecting bracket-members 16 carry the idler sprockets (not shown) over which the receiving ends of said conveyer chains 14 run. Said bracket-members 16 also carry a pair of laterally spaced longitudinally extending guides 17, between which said conveyer-ehains run, and which serve to prevent displacement of articles carried by said chains to the wrapping mechanism. The means for driving said delivering conveyerchains comprises a rock-shaft 18 which is journaled transversely between said side frames, by bearings 19 secured to the latter. Fixed on said rock-shaft 18 is a lever-arm 20. Operatively related to said main driving shaft is an eccentric 21, the connecting rod 22 of which is pivotally secured to the free end of said lever-arm 20. Secured upon said rock-shaft 18 is a rocking-arm 23. F ixed on said sprocket shaft 12 is a ratchetwheel 24. Arranged upon said shaft 12 so as to swing thereon is an oscillatable plate 25, which carries a spring dog 26 adapted to cooperate with said ratchet-wheel. A con-' necting rod 27 interconnects said oscillatable plate 25 with said rocking arm 23. The eccentric 21 operated by the main shaft 5 imparts a timed rocking movement to the rock-shaft 18, thereby rocking the rocking arm 23, thereby. through the connecting rod 27, oscillating the plate 25. A downward movement of the plate 25 carries the spring dog 26 downward slidingly over a tooth of the ratchet-wheel 24, until it drops behind said tooth, whereupon an upward movement of the plate 25 carries the spring dog 26 upward while engaged with said tooth, thus rotating the. ratchet-wheel 24, the shaft 12 and the sprockets 13, so that a forward deli'veringmovement is imparted to the conveyer-chains 14. An article to be wrapped, such as a chocolatealmond bar 28, is placed upon the conveyer-chains'at their outer receiving ends. in front of each pair of propelling elements 15; The intermittent move- .forward end.
ment of the conveyer-chains thereby delivers successively upon the platform 9 each bar 28, in proper time to be received and passed through the wrapping mechanism.
Arranged at each side of said platform 9, and preferably connected with the brackets 8, are guide members 29 which slidingly guide a reciprocating slide-plate 30 over the platform 9. Said slide-plate 30 is so arranged that the bars 28 delivered by the conveyer chains 14 may pass beneath the same to the platform 9. Pivotally mounted upon said slide-plate is a push-plate 31 having downwardly curved fingers 32 at its After a bar 28 has been delivered upon the platform 9, said slide-plate being retracted to position the fingers 32 in back of said bar, the plate is moved forward, carrying the fingers 32 of the pushplate 31 into propelling engagement with said bar. The means for reciprocating the slide-plate and its push-plate, comprises a pair of rocking-arms 33 fixed on said rockshaft 18, and interconnected by means of links 34 with lugs 35 projecting from the under side of said slide-plate, so that as said eccentric 21 rocks said rock-shaft 18, the rocking arms 33 in swinging inward will impart an inward movement to said slideplate, etc., and in swinging outward will retract said slide-plate, etc. It will be. noticed also that the conveyer chains 14 stand idle while the slide-plate is making its propelling movement, but move to deliver a new bar 28 to the platform 9, while said slide-plate is being retracted to normal initial position. Connected with one of said guide-members 29 is a bearing block 36 in which is journaled a spindle 37 carrying on one end a downwardly inclined trip-lever 38. The outer or opposite end of said spindle 37 is provided with an arm 39 to which is attached a spring 40 for maintaining said spindle and trip-lever in normal position. Connected with a side of said push-plate 31 an outwardly projecting pin 41. As the push-plate 31 is moved inward in propelling relation to the bar 28, said pin 41 rides beneath the trip-lever 38, lifting the latter against the tension of the spring 40. As soon as the pin 41 passes the end of-said trip-lever the latter is returned by the tension of said spring 40 to normal position. As the push-plate moves out-ward or is re: tracted to normal initial position, after having completed its propelling movement. the
pin 41 passes over the downwardly inclined trip-lever, and 1n riding up and over the same, swings upwardly said push-plate and its fingers 32, so as to lift the latter over 85 between the same and said roll 58.
measn thus positioning its fingers 32 in back of the new bar 28 ready for the next propelling movement, whereby the said new bar is engaged and propelled over the platform 9 to the wrapping mechanism subsequently to be described.
J ou'rnaled in bearings 42, which are arranged upon said side frames 2, is a wrap ping roll or cylinder 43, the same being provided with a transverse or diametrically disposed opening or slot'44, having upon its opposite upper and lower sides yieldable plates 45. Each plate is pivoted at one end, but yieldingly held at its free end by a cushioning spring 46. Said yieldable plates are so arranged relatively to each other, that their plvoted ends are respectively positioned at opposite mouths of said opening or slot 44, consequently a yieldable end of one plate is located at each mouth. Arranged withiri said opening or slot 44 between said yieldable plates is a slidablepushdevice or element 47. Said wrapping roll or cylinder is arranged adjacent to the inner end of said platform 9, and its opening or slot 44 disposed normally in alinement therewith. The means for imparting operative rotation to said wrapping roll comprises, a spur-gear 48 fixed upon the outer end of said main driving shaft 5. Said spur-gear 48 drives a suitable Geneva movement 49 mounted on a side frame 2. Meshing in driven relation with said Geneva movement 49 is an idler spur-gear 50, which in turn meshes with and drives a. spur-gear 51 fixed to one end of said wrapping roll or cylinder 43. The Geneva movement so transmits driving movement to said wrapping roll or cylinder 43 that the same completes a half revolution to each revolution of the driving shaft 5.
The wrapper feed mechanism for feeding the wrapper material in proper relation to the article to be wrapped, to wit the chocolate bar 28, and the wrapping roll or cylinder 43, comprises a supporting bracket 52 connected with a side frame 2, so as to project upwardly therefrom. Supported by' said bracket 52 is a spindle 53 upon which 1s rotatably mounted a roll of wrapping materia 54, arranged between side guides 55 secured to said spindle 53. Extending-vertically upward from said brackets 8 are bearing standards 56, to and between which is journaled a transverse shaft 57 carrying a rubber faced feed-roll 58. Connected with said bearing standards are laterally movable bearing blocks 59 supporting a transverse shaft 66 parallel to said shaft 57, which shaft 30 also carries a rubber faced roll 61. "The' movable bearing blocks-59 are normally pressed inward by spring tension devices 62,
so as to press said roll 61 into frictional feeding contact with the wrapping mater al fed A means are downwardly extending lever fingers 64 Y which engage the shaft 60 upon which said roll 61 is fixed. Fixed upon the outer end of said shaft 63 is a hub 65 to which is pivotally secured, so as to be capable of limited swinging movement in a horizontal plane, a hand lever 66 by means of which said shaft 63 may be rocked. Projecting from the side of a standard 56, adjacent to said hand lever 66, is a lug 67. By lifting said hand lever 66 upward above said lug 67, the shaft 63 is rocked to cause said lever fingers 64 to push backward upon the shaft 60 thus separating the roll 61 from the roll 58, and then by swinging said hand lever 66 over said lug 67, so as to engage it with the latter, the shaft 60 and roll 61 are maintained in such retracted position. Associated with said rolls 50 and 61 are suitable wrapping material guides 68, the same being properly cut out to permit the respective rolls to project therethrough to their mutually coiiperating positions. The means for driving said rolls comprises a sprocket wheel 69 mounted on a journal of said Wrapping roll or cylinder 43, over which runs a driving chain 70. Mounted on the side of a standard 56 is a sprocket wheel 71 driven by the chain 70, and associated with which is a spur gear 72, which meshes with a spur gear 73 fixed on said shaft 57 of the roll 58. A spur gear 73 fixed on said shaft 60 meshes operatively with said spur gear 73. By this arrangement the said feed rolls 58 and 61 are driven in opposite directions so as to feed downward the wrapping material passed therebetween. The wrapping material 54 is fed down from the roll over a swinging ten-- sioning roller 74 suspended from said spindle 53, thence through the guides 68 and between the rolls 58 and 61. As the wrapping roll or cylinder makes each half revolution, the wrapping material feeding devices feed down a properly determined proportion of the same between the bar 28 and the presented mouth of the slot 44, prior to the movement of the bar 28 into said slot 44. A means for cutting this proportion of wrapping material from the main portion thereof. operates just prior to the entrance of the bar 28 into the slot 44 of the wrapping roll or cylinder 43.
' This cutting mechanism comprises a trans verse stationary shear blade 75 fixed to said standards 56, below the feed rolls, and a movable shear 76 pivoted to one end of the said stationary shear blade 75. The wrappingmaterial asses downwardly between said blades, an at a proper time the movable blade is swung into cutting relation with the stationary blade, thereby severing the wrapping material. The means for producing a properly timed movement of said movable cutting blade 76, comprises an eccentric 77 mounted upon and operated by said main driving shaft 5. Pivoted to the inner surface of one of said side frames 2 is a bell-crank lever 78, the lower horizontal arm of which is pivotally connected with said eccentric 77, and the upper arm of which is interconnected by link-members 79 with the free end of said movable shear blade 76, so that the oscillation imparted to said bell-crank lever 78 by said eccentric, is in turn transmitted operatively to said movable shear blade to produce its timed cutting movement.
As the wrapping roll-.or cylinder 43 makes its half revolution, the wrapping material is fed downward across its slot 44. The
' wrapping roll or cylinder comes to a stop ping material and bar 28 into said slot 44,
with the wrapping material folded about one longitudinal edge and partially about the body of thebar. The yieldable plates 45 within the slot 44 yield to the pressure of the bar, and yet exercise sufficient pressure upon the same and the wrapping material to assure a tight snugly fitting fold of the latter over the bar 28, and in so yielding accommodate the slot to the irregularities of the bar. The push-fingers 32 are thereupon retracted to normal initial position as already above described. The wrap ping roll or cylinder now completes a half turn, which carries an outwardly projecting portion of the wrapping material beneath a roller 80 mounted adjacent to the outer surface of the roll or cylinder 43, thus turning up the projecting portion of the wrapping material snugly over the opposite longitudinal edge of the bar. In previously entering the slot 44 the bar 28 pushes the push-device 47 to the opposite mouth of the slot 44, so that when the roll or cylinder makes its half turn, and the next succeeding bar 28 is pushed into the slot 44, the push-device will be propelled through the slot so as to eject the partially wrapped bar 28, which has been presented opposlte a folding mechanism by the half revolution of the said roll or cylinder 43, and thence under said foldingmechanism, which is about to be described.
The said folding mechanism is supported upon inwardly and oppositely extendii'ig aeeaaii form members 81, so as to straddle or bridge the passageway 82, and is at the same time pushed beneath said folder bridge 82, which engages the up standing fold of the wrapping material and folds the same over the body of the bar, thus completing the longitudinal folds of the wrapping material.
The longitudinally wrapped bar is now ready to be subjected to the end folding devices, which comprise, first, end tucking and fitting means, and second, an end turn-over means, together with a propelling mechanism for carrying the partially wrapped bar into operative engagement with said several means. The propelling means comprises a pair of parallel channeled bars providing guideways 86, which are arranged between side frames 2 so as to extend beneath said platform members 81. The said guideways are so mounted as to be capable of being raised from an initial lowered horizontal position or plane to a raised horizontal position or plane. To this end a pair of trans verse rock-shafts 87 are provided to extend between said side frames 2. Said rock-shafts 87 are provided with arms 88 pivotally con- 100 nected with the bottom of said guideways adjacent to their respective ends, so as to support the same in longitudinal parallel extension between and above said rockshafts, and in proper laterally spaced relation to each other. The said rock-shafts 87 are interconnected-for simultaneous operation by means of a link 89 which connects an arm 90 of one rock-shaft with a similar arm 91 of the otherrock-shaft. The means for 110 rocking said rock-shafts to raise and lower said guideways in properly timed relation to the other mechanisms of the machine, comprises a cam member 92 fixed on said driving-shaft 5, which cooperates with a 11b rocking lever 93 fixed upon one of said rockshafts, said rocking lever 93 having a roller 94 at its free end which rides upon the periphery of said cam-member to reduce friction between said parts. Mounted to slide 120 respectively in said guideways 86 are slide bars 95. The means for effecting a properly timed reciprocation of said slide bars in said guideways comprises a rock-shaft 96 journaled in and between'said side-frames 2, and provided upon one of its outer ends with a crank-member 97 An eccentric 98 connected with and operated by said main driving shaft 5,is connectedvby a connecting-rod 99-with said crank-member 97, so
that properly timed oscillatory movements are transmitted to said rock-shaft 96. Fixed upon said rock-shaft 96 are a pair of rockingarms 100, the outer free ends of which are interconnected by means of links 101 with laterally projecting studs 102 mounted upon said respective slide bars 95 in fixed relation thereto. The oscillations of said rock-shaft 96 are thereby translated into longitudinal reciprocatory movements of said slide bars 95 Within said guideways- 86. Bridging said respective slide bars 95 in fixed relation thereto is a transverse bar 103, upon which is supported an upwardly projecting push-piece 104. After the longitudinally wrapped bar 28 has been ejected from said wrapping roll or cylinder 43 and delivered upon said platform members 81, beneath said folder bridge 83, the cam-member 92 operates to elevate said guideways 86, thus carrying upward said push-piece 104 into operative position behind the bar 28.
I Since the bars 28 are usually possessed of inclined or chamfered edges or ends 28 (see Figs. 5 and 6), and since it is desirable to assure the smoothing and fitting of the wrapping material over such edges or ends, there isprovided an end tucking means connected with said platform members 81 beneath said folder bridge device. Said plat form members are provided with cutaway portions or openings 105.- Pivoted to said platform members so as to be capable of swinging upwardly through said openings 105 are carrier members 106,-.having at their outer free ends a downwardly projecting lift lug 107 to the end of which is secured an anti-friction roller 108. Pivotally' connected to the upper free edge of the end of said carrier members 106 is a yieldable smoothing or tucking plate 109, a leaf-spring 1.10 being secured to said carrier member 106 in such a manner as to yieldingly press said smoothing or tucking plate 109 into operative contact with the ends of the wrapping material. drops down beneath the supporting level of said platform members 81, so that the bar 28 with its wrapper may first pass over the same into position beneath the folder bridge 83. When the bar 28 is thus positioned, and the'guideways 86 are raised the rising movement of said guideways carries vertically upward the transverse bar 103', which engages said rollers 108, thereby swinging upwardly said carrier members 106, and consequently carrying said tucker plates 109 into engagement with the ends of the wrapping material beyond the chamfered ends .28 of the bar 28. The tucker plates 109 are thus caused to turn upwardly the ends of the wrapping material, and also, owing to the yielding pressure exerted by the leaf-springs 110, are caused to iron or smooth said wrapper ends over said cham- Normally said tucking means.
folder bridge 83, are a pair of end fold turn-over members 111, having guide surfaces 112 which lead to and merge into the horizontal fold-down projections 113. After the rising of said guideways 86 to their upward limit, to position the push-piece 104 and operate the smoothing or tucking means above described, the transmission for the slide-bars 95 operates to move the same longitudinally forward in the guideways 86, thus causing said transverse bar 103 and the push-piece 104 carried thereby to move for wardly, so that the latter engages the partially wrapped bar 28 and propels the same forward into and through the end-fold turnover means. wrapper material during such travel engage the guide surfaces 112, and slide along the same into engagement with the folddown projections 113, thus turning or folding over the end portions of the wrapping material, and flattening the same down over the body of the bar 28, as will be understood. In order to prevent accidental displacement of the bar 28, or distortion of the wrapping material from proper relation thereto, while being propelled into and through the end fold turn-over means, a guard plate 114, supported under yieldable tension in relation to said turn-over means, "is provided. The said guard plate 114 is arranged between the opposed end-fold turn-over members 111, and is supported as follows :--Connected with said folder-bridge 83 is an upright post 115 to which is pivoted'a for wardly extending arm 1161 Said guard plate 114 isalso provided with an upright post 117 which is pivotally connected with the free end of said arm 116. Connected with said arm 116 is an adjustable stopscrew 118, which engages the upper surface of said folder bridge 83 beyond said post 115, and thus determines the downward movement of said arm.' A tension spring 119 associated with said arm 116 presses upon the rearward end of said guard plate 114, so
The upturned ends of the that said guard plate is yieldingly pressed wardly into and through a means for applying and aflixing to the wrapped bar an encircling label.
The labeling devices comprise a label wrapping roll or cylinder 120, which is journaled in bearings 121.fixed upon said side frames 2. The means for driving said label wrapping roll or cylinder 120 comprises intermeshing idler gears 122 which are operatively meshed with said Geneva movement 49, and which drive a spur gear 123 fixed on one end of a journal of the label wrapping roll or cylinder, thus providing a transmission for driving the latter to make timed half revolutions to each revolution of said driving shaft 5, and in synchronism with the wrapping elements of the machine already above described. Said label wrapping roll or cylinder 120 is provided with a transverse or diametrically disposed opening or slot 124, having upon its opposite upper and lower sides yieldable plates 125. Each plate is pivoted at one end, but yieldingly held at its free end by a cushioning spring 126. Said yieldable plates are so arranged relatively to, each other, that their pivoted ends are respectively positioned at opposite mouths of said opening or slot 124, consequently a yieldable end of one plate is located at each mouth. Arranged within said opening or slot 124 between said yieldable plates is a slidable push-device or element, 127. Said label wrapping roll or cylinder is situated at the discharge end of said turnover means, so that its opening or slot 124 is disposed normally in alinementwith the ends of said platform members 83 to receive the wrapped bar 28 discharged off of the latter.
Located above said label wrapping roll or cylinder is a label box or supporting frame 128, in which the supply of labels 129 are piled ready for use. The said box or supporting frame is itself supported by a bracket or standard 130 secured upon one of a pair of, opposed platform members 131 mounted on said side frames 2 beyond said label wrapping roll or cylinder 120. Said label box or supporting frame 128 is open at its bottom except for ledges 132 which sup- 7 port the ends of the pile of labels placed therein.
A means for feeding the labels, one at a time, and in properly timed relation to the operative movements of the label wrapping roll or cylinder comprises a vertically reciprocatory carrier slide 133, which is mounted in a guideway member'134 secured to a platform member 131, the latter being suitably cut away to permit the carrier slide to move therethrough. Secured to the upper end of said carrier slide 133 .is a suction pipe'135, havmga laterally disposed hollow suction member 136 provided with openings 137 in its upper surface. Connected in. the line of said suction pipe 135 is a shut-off valve 138,
' and said pipe 135 communicates with a suitable hose 139 which leads to an air exhaust or suction producing mechanism (not shown). The said shut-off valve 138 is provided with a valve plug 140 having a transverse valve port 141 extending therethrough. Said valve plug is provided upon its exterior end with a turn-key 142. Secured upon said platform 131 through which said carrier slide 133 extends, is a bracket member 143, upon which are adjustably arranged a pair of shut-off valve operating stops 144 and 145, arranged vertically one above the other.
The said wrapping roll or cylinder is provided on each side of its transverseopening or slot 124, with longitudinally extending air channels or passages 146 from which extend outwardly to the surface of the said roll or cylinder a plurality of holes or perforations 147. Said air channels or passages 146 communicate with a proper valve mechanism contained in the valve cap 148, and communication is also had with said valve mechanism through proper channels in the journal 149 which lead to the exhaust cap 150, the latter being connected in communication with the hose 139 leading to the air exhaust or suction mechanism, the object being to provide at proper times a suction at the surface of said roll or cylinder adapted to cause "a label delivered thereupon to adhere to and move with the roll or cylinder into position to receive the wrapped bar 28 as the same is pushed into the opening or slot 124. The suction devices and valve mechanism as applied to the roll or cylinder has been described and claimed in previous patents, and will readily be understood by those skilled in the art-to which my present invention pertains.
The means for producing a properly timed reciprocation of said carrier slide 133, and the label delivery mechanism associated therewith comprises, a cam-device 151 mounted on and rotated by said main shaft 5, a lever 152 fulcrumed on a transverse shaft 153 which extends between said side frames 2, and a connecting bar 154 pivotally connected with'one end of said lever 152 and provided with a roller 155 which rides in the cam groove 151' of said cam device 151. Said connecting bar 154 has a lower bifurcated end 156 which straddles said shaft 5, and prevents displacement of said bar from operative relation to said cam-device during operation of the mechanism. The opposite end of said lever 152 ispivotally connected. with the lower end of s'aidkarrier slide 133.
The valve mechanism controlling the air suction through the passages 146 of the wrapping roll or cylinder 120 is operated by producing properly timed oscillations of the cap 148. and to this end said cap is provided with a lever arm 157. A cam device 158 is mounted on and rotated by said transverse shaft 153, and a connecting bar 159, pivotally connected with the free end of said lever arm 157, is provided with a roller 160 which rides in a cam groove 161 of said cam-device 158, said connecting bar 159 having a lower bifurcated end 162 which straddles said shaft 153, and thereby prevents displacement of said bar 159 from operative relation to said cam device 158.. Said shaft 153 is driven by a gear 163 fixed thereon, "and which meshes operatively with a driving gear 164 mounted on said driving shaft 5.
The operation of the label feed and wrapping means is as follows :When the carrier slide 133 is in its upwardly moved position the suction member 136 is carried into contact with the bottom label of thepile of labels contained "in the supporting frame 128. In the upward movement of the carrier slide 133 the suction pipe 135 is also carried upward so that the turn-key 142 of the valve plug 140 is carried into engagement with the uppermost stop 144, such engagement serving to turn said turn-key and consequently said valve plug 140 to position the'port 141 in open position or-alinement with the passage of the suction pipe 135. This being accomplished the suction created within the pipe 135, and consequently within the suction member 136 tends to draw down upon the openings 137 of the latter the bot-,
in such position that the label extends over 1 the holes 147 communicating with the passages 146 of said roll or cylinder. As the carrier slide is moved to its lowermost position, the turn-key 142 of the valve plug 140 is carried into operative engagement with the lower step 145, whereby the same are turned backto normal position, so that the valve is closed, thus interrupting the suction action within said suction member 136, and
consequently releasing the label from adhering relation to said suction member. The suction valve mechanism of the roll. or cylinder 120 is timed to operate when the label is thus released from the suction member 136, so that a suction is established through the passage 146 and openings 147 of the roll or cylinder over which the label extends, thereby causing said label to adhere to the surface of said roll or cylinder. The label having thus been delivered to the wrapping roll or cylinder 120, the latter is caused, through the properly timed operation of its transmission mechanism to make a half revolution, which carries the label downward in front of the wrapped bar 28, and across the opening or slot 124 of the roll or cylinder. These movements are so timed, that the label is thus positioned immediately prior to the forcing outwardly from the end turning or folding mechanism, by the push-piece 104, of the wrapped article, so that as the pushpiece 104-continues to propel the wrapped bar forward, the latter engages the label and is thereupon pushed into the slot 124 of the roll in such manner that the label is partially wrapped around the'wrapped bar, the suction through the passages 146 and 147 being cut off by the operation valve mechanism in time to release the label for such insertion with the wrappedbar into said slot 124 of the roll or cylinder. When the label and wrapped bar are fully inserted within the roll or cylinder 120, one end of the label still projects outwardly therefrom. As the end of the label held by the suction action is carried around by the half revolution of the roll or cylinder so as to be positioned beneath the'latter, it is also, when in such position operatively positioned relative to a glue applying mechanism, which, as the suction is cut off to permit theretained end of the label to release itself from the roll or cylinder surface, is timed to operate and thereupon apply a proper quantity of moistglue or suitable adhesive to the inner side of vsaid free label end.
' a spindle 168 which is journaled in the sides of said glue-pot. Fixed upon an exteriorly projecting end of said spindle is" a clutch bar 169. Connected with a side frame 2 is an inwardly projecting stud shaft 170, upon which is rotatably mounted a sprocket wheel 171. Connected with the hub .of said sprocket wheel, so as to turn with the same, is a clutch hub 172 from which projects a pair of clutch-pins 173. The transverse shaft 153 is provided with a driving sprocket 174, which drives the chain 175 running over said sprocket wheel 171 and thereby driving said clutch hub 172 and its clutch-pins 173.- When said glue pot is raised to normal operative position, said clutch bar 169 passes between said clutchpins 173, so that the latter are caused to engage the former, whereby the feed roller 167 is rotated. A covermember- 176 closes over said glue pot and its feed roller, said cover-memberhaving apertures 177 through which access may be gained to said feed roller. Mounted upon said transverse shaft 153 is acylinder 178 from the surface of which'project a series of wiping fingers 179, which as the cylinder revolves, enter through platform is vertically slidable.
fit
said apertures 177, and contact with the feed roller 167 to pick up from its surfacela quantity of glue, which is carried upon the rotating surface of said feed roller. As the wiping fingers 179 are revolved they strike the inner surface of the label end as it is released from the suction devices of the wrapping roll or cylinder 120, applying thereto a proper amount of moist glue or adhesive. In order to permit of the removal of the glue pot for replenishment of its contents, the platform 166, is arranged so that it may be lowered to render the glue pot more easily accessible. To this end a pair of vertical rods 180 are secured to said side frames 2 upon and between which said Slidably movable upon the lower extremities of said rods 180 are bearing devices 181 for supporting a transverse shaft 182. Fixed upon said shaft 182 is a toggle lever 183, to the upper free end of which is pivotally connected a link 184, the opposite end of said link 184 being pivotally connected with the under side of said platform. A hand lever 185 is also fixed upon said transverse shaft 182 for oscillating the same. Arranged upon the lower ends of said rods 180 beneath said bearing members 181 are coiled compression springs 186, stop nuts 187 being fixed upon said rods to provide abutments for said springs. When the hand lever is manipulated to swing the same downward, the shaft 182 is rotated in one direction, thereby swinging downward the toggle lever 183, and causing the link to collapse thereupon, as shown by the dotted representation of the parts in Fig. 10 of the drawings. This movement causes the platform 166 to slide downward on the rods 180 and thus lowers the glue pot 165. When the hand-lever is swung upward, the shaft 182 is rotated in the opposite direction, and the toggle lever is swung upwardly thus pushing on said link, and consequently raising said platform and glue pot to normal operative position. This movement is completed when the pivotal connection. between the toggle lever and link has passed by the vertical imaginary line cutting through the y axis of said shaft 182 and the pivotal connection of said link with said platform, whereupon the pressure of the springs 186 tendsto hold the parts in such positions, and consequently hold the platform and glue pot in raised position, until the hand lever is again swung downward to cause the reverse movement of the parts against the tension of saidsprings 186.
After the glue or adhesive has'been applied to the .label, as above described, a timed half rotation of the wrapping roll or cylinder carries the wrapped bar with the partially wrapped label around,- so as to present the same in line with a pair of opposed receiving platforms 131, the projecting label end being folded down across the longitudinal edge of the wrapped bar by engagement with the ends of said platforms 131. As a succeeding wrapped article is pushed into the opposite mouth of the slot 124 of the roll or cylinder, the push-device or element 127 is moved through said slot so as to eject the partially labeled wrapped bar out of the slot and on to the receiving platforms 131, this movement carrying the same beneath a retaining plate 189, fixed in properly spaced relation above said platforms 131, by supporting blocks and latches 188 so that the free. glue carrying end of the label is thus folded over the bottom of the wrapped bar, and caused to adhere to the oppositely folded portion of the label. After thus being ejected on to the platforms 131, the wrapped and labeled bar is ready to be propelled over said platforms 131 to the conveying off mechanism. For thus propelling the said wrapped and labeled bar, the respective slide bars 95, above described are provided with a second bridging transverse bar 190 upon which is fixed an upwardly extending push-piece 191. As the guideways 86 are elevated said slide bars 95, transverse bar 190 and push-piece 191, are carried upwardly to position the latter behind the wrapped and labeled bar, and consequently when the timed forward movement of the slide bars 95 takes place, the push-piece 191 engages the wrapped and labeled bar, propelling the same forward in position to be picked up by a conveying off mechanism.
The said conveying off mechanism comprises a pair of bearing brackets 192 mounted .upon said platform 188, in which is journaled a shaft 193 upon which are fixed a pair of laterally spaced sprockets 194. Running over said sprockets 194 are conveyer chains 195, having at properly spaced intervals propelling elements 196. Connected with the adjacent standards 3 are a pair of outwardly extending longitudinally'projecting bracket-members 197, upon the outer ends of which are mounted idler sprockets (not shown) over which theconveyer chains run. Transversely extending bridge-pieces 198 support a platform 199 beneath said conveyer chains. Fixed in said platform 199, so as to extend upwardly from the surface thereof are a plurality of cushioning bristle devices 200. These bristle devices provide a resilient or yieldable surface for supsame is propelled onward by the conveyer chain, and owing to the resilient or yielding character of the same tend to firmly brush the wrapper and label over any inequalities of the bar, caused by protruding lumps, as in the case of almond'and other nut bars, thereby firmly pressing the ends of the label together at all points, and assuring maintained meeting of the label ends until the adhesive or glue joining the same together has ample time to set. Another advantage of this cushioning support, 1s that it afiords' a character of support less liable to do injury to either the label or wrapper of the bar. v
The means for driving said conveyer chain comprises an oscillatable plate 201 pivoted upon said shaft 193 and carrying a spring dog 202, which operatively cooperates with a ratchet-wheel 203 fixed on said shaft 193. Fixed on said rock-shaft 96 is a rocking lever 204, which is interconnected by a link 205 with said oscillatable plate 201. As the shaft 96 is oscillated, the rocking movements thereof are transmitted through said link 205 to said oscillating plate 201 so that said spring dog 202 is intermittently carried into propelling engagement with said ratchet wheel' 203, thereby intermittently driving said sprockets 194 and conveyer chains 195 in properly timed relation to the delivery of wrapped and labeled bars thereto.
It will be noted that when the guideways 86 are lowered, the slide bars 95 are re tracted to normal initial position, and thus are permitted to pass the push-pieces 10 1 and 191 beneath previously delivered articles undergoing their respective wrapping and labeling operations, so that as the guideways 86 are again elevated, and the slide bars 95 moved forward for their operative stroke, the said respective push pieces 104 and 191 will be raised behind and caused to travel in propelling relation to the next succeeding articles undergoing their respective wrapping and labeling operations.
It will also be noted, that the label delivering mechanism is particularly adapted to operate upon embossed labels, which owing to the embossed printing applied thereto, dove-tail together when piled one on top of the other, thus rendering difficult any sidewise movement thereof relative to one another. Since, however, the'novel label de- 7 simultaneously. In other words, the articles to be wrapped andlabeled are passed through the machine in such a manner, that several pieces are being operated upon at the same time to perform some one or another of the wrapping and labeling operations.
The labeling mechanism above described will be made the subject of a separate application for Letters-Patent as a divisional application of the present application.
