To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAN BURDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bearings, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to adjustable bearings, and more particularly to bearings for sand reel shafts of well drilling machines, and it comprises a bearing adapted to support one end of the sand reel shaft, a pin secured to said bearing and projecting above and below the same, and supporting means secured to the swing lever, said supporting means comprising a pair of plates or brackcts, the lower member being provided with a socket or recess for the reception of the lower end of said pin, said end being rounded and the upper member having an elongated opening therein and being adapted to receive the upper end of said pin.
The present invention relates particularly to adjustable bearings used in friction drives, wherein the drive pulley is permanently mounted on a shaft and the driven pulley is mounted on a shaft having a hearing at one end permanently secured and having the other end mounted in a movable bearing whereby the driven pulley may be brought into engagement with the drive pulley. In a construction of this sort, it is advantageous to provide means for permit-- ting slight adjustment of the movable shaft to permit the shaft to assume a position parallel to the shaft of the drive pulley.
In the accompanying drawings, and in the following description, I have shown and described the invention applied to a well drilling rig. It will be obvious that the invention is not limited to this specific application and may be employed in any type of machinery wherein one end of the shaft is permanently mounted in a fixed bearing and the other end mounted in a movable bearing to permit movement of the shaft for engagement of gears and the like.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing;-

Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a sultable base upon which is mounted standards 2 forming a support for drive shaft 3 mounted in bearings l arranged in the standards. A master wheel 5 or drive pulley is arranged on the drive shaft. Arranged on the base is a standard 6 having a bearing 7 to support one end of the driven shaft 8 which, in this instance, is shown as the sand reel shaft. A. standard 9 is arranged in alinement with the standard 6 and terminates below the horizontal plane of the sand reel shaft. A swing lever 10 is pivotally mounted in this standard. The sand reel shaft is provided with pulleys 11 and 12 adapted to be brought nto engagement with the master wheel to drive the shaft. Any suitable mechanism may be arranged on the driven shaft. As shown, a reel 13 adapted to receive the sand line or cable, which supports and actuates the bailer, is arranged on this shaft. An operating handle 14 is secured to the end of the swing lever.
Referring in detail to Figs. 3 to 6 of the drawings, the end of shaft 8 is supported in an adjustable bearing carried by the swing lever. As shown, this bearing is made in two sections 15 and 16 secured to each other by suitable fastening means 17. The bearing per se is of the usual construction and forms no part of the present invention, except in the combination claimed. A supporting member or pin 18 is secured in any suitable manner to one of the bearing sections, and this member projects above and below the hearing. The lower end thereof is rounded as at 19 and is adapted to be received in a reress or socket 20 of a supporting member 21. The supporting member may be made of metal or other suitable material and is adapted to be arranged in an opening of the swing lever. The end of the supporting member is provided with threads 22 for the reception of a nut 23 whereby the supporting member is secured to the swing lever.
The upper end of the pin 18 is formed cylindrical as at 24 and is adapted to be received in an elongated opening 25 in an upper supporting member 26. This member also extends through an opening in the swing lever and is provided with a threaded end 27 for the reception of a fastening nut 28. A reinforcing plate 29, made of metal or other suitable material, may be arranged between the upper and lower supporting members and the swing lever to prevent wear.
In operation, the operating handle is moved by the operator to swing the lever 10 on its pivot and bring the pulleys 11 and 12 into engagement with the master wheel The master wheel is generally made of wood and the pulleys are driven by friction, where by the sand reel shaft is revolved when the pulleys are in engagement with the master wheel. Heretofore, the movable end of the shaft 8 has been arranged in the bearing made by cutting a hole of suitable size in the swing lever. It has been necessary to ntd-ce this hole large enough to allow the shaft to assume its different positions when adjusted, causing a great deal of friction betweei'i the steel shaft and the wooden bearing. Such construction has proved unsatisfactory, and in the present invention, I have provided means for supporting the free end of the sand reel shaft in metal bearings, the hearing at the free end of the shaft being adjustable to accommodate the shaft in any of its numerous positions.
It is to be understood that, while I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. An adjustable bearing support comprising a member secured to a bearing and arranged at one side thereof, said member extending above and below said bearing, a supporting member arranged near one end of said member and having a socket therein for the reception of the end of said member, and a second supportin member having an elongated opening therein adapted to receive and support the other end of said member.
2. An adjustable bearing support comprising a member secured to a bearing and arranged at one side thereof, said member extending above and below said bearing, a supporting member arranged near one end of said member and having a socket therein for the reception oi? the end of said member, the cadet said member being provided with a substantially spherical head, and a second supporting member having an elongated opening therein adapted to receive and support the other end of said member.
3. The combination with a shaft and a fixed bearing supporting one end of said shaft, of an adjustable bearing support for the other end of said shaft, said support comprising a pivoted lever, upper and lower supporting members secured thereto, a bearing in which the end of. said shaft is mounted, and a pin secured to said bearing and arranged at one side thereof, said pin having its ends arranged in openings in said upper and lower supporting members.
The combination with a shaft and a fixed bearing supporting one end oi said shaft, of an adjustable bearing support for the other end of said shaft, said support eomprising a pivoted lever, upper and lower supporting members secured thereto, the lower member being provided with a socket in its upper face and the upper member having an elongated opening, a bearing in which the end of said shaft is mounted, and a pin secared to said bea ring and arranged at one side thereof, said pin having its ends arranged in said socket and said elongated opening.
5. The combination with a shaft and a fixed bearing supporting one end of said shaft, of an adjustable bearing support for the other end oil said shaft, said support comprising a. pivoted lever, upper and lower supporting members secuned thereto, the lower member being provided with a socket in its upper face and the upper member having an elongated opening, a bearing in which the end of said shaft is mounted, and a pin secured to said bearing and arranged at one side thereof, said pin having its ends arranged in said socket and said elongated open-ing,.the lower end of said pin being provided with a substantiall spherical head.
