UNITED STATES PATENT EEIGE.A
CHARLES CLARK, OF UNADILLA FORKS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOISTING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,212, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CLARK, of Unadilla Forks, in` the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification. 4
The natureof my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a hoisting or elevating apparatus for storing hay and grain and for other purposes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my invention.
A represents a carriage, of any suitable construction and dimensions, suspended by means of two wheels, B B, from a track, C. In the carriage A is pivoted a latch, D, which catches on a plate, E, to hold the carriage steady when it is over the place where it is to receive the load. On the carriage is also pivoted a hook, G, which is thrown backward when the latch catches on the plate E by means of a rod or frame, H, attached to its upper end and striking said plate E. The hook is thrown forward when the latch is released, and the carriage moved forward on its tracl by means of a spring, a. bis the hoisting-rope, which passes over a pulley, I, in the front end of the carriage, and then around a pulley, J, to the frame or block of which the hook d is attached,
. and the end of the rope bis fastened at the other or rear end of the carriage. his a loop attached to and projecting upward from the frame containing the pulley J.
The latch D fastening ou the plate Ey holds the car stationary until the load is hoisted, and the loop h strikes against the forward end of the latch pressing it upward and loosening it from the plate E, allowing the car to move forward on the track. At the same time that the loop strikes the end of the latch it passes above the end of the hook G, so that when the car commences to move the spring a will throw said hook into the loop, and thus keep the weight suspended when the hoisting power ceases to be applied. After the load has been removed the car is drawn back, when the rod or frame H strikes the plate E, pushing the hook G out ofthe loop of the pulley J ,which drops down, ready to receive another load, while the latch holds the car in position, as before.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-n l. In a hoisting or elevating apparatus hav ing a movable car or carriage, an automaticall y-operatin g hook, or its equivalent, for keeping the load suspended, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. rlhe combination of the pivoted hook G, rod or frame H, and spring b, arranged as described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the movable car A, latch D, plate E, pulley J, loop h,and hook G, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence oli' two witnesses.
CHARLES CLARK.
